I've created a .s file for the Atlantic, and I've hit a bump in the road. I've created a temporary .eng file for the engine, and created a consist. When I try to run the consist, MSTS doesn't like it. However, when I test the engine in conbuilder, conbuilder says the engine's fine. How can I fix this?mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

Jonathan, thanks for the compliments. I still have to texture the loco, and add on all the bells and whistles(literally). I hope to have it finnished sometime in the near future, but I don't have any idea how long it will take. My current goal is to have it done before the year is over. I might have to wait a while to get the textures. I will need to go to the B&O R.R. Museum to get pictures of the engine, and they won't open back up until the roundhouse roof is fixed.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

Which menu is the compression option under? The poly count is:
before conversion- 2533
after conversion- 6782
Does it seem high? I plan on reducing the number of polys in the boiler.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

Nice!
To cure the position problem you should check your main objects axis location. Select it and then select the menu Part/Center Axis/To Origin. You might have to make some small adjustments but it should be close to correct after that.There are some areas in the engine where it looks like you have used lots of polys. The boiler only needs one height segment, wheel axels don't need that many if you use smothing. Biggest saving potential though has the drive train and pistons. Another saving option is to remove polygons that will never be seen like ends of objects that are flat to another object, only smal saving for each but together it makes up.For the animation you should name the wheel sets Wheels1 & Wheels2, although it sounds strange the driving rods should be child objects of the wheels or they will not animate properly. 9 animation frames with 40° wheel rotation for each frame, first and last frame the same. Unfortunately TSM will only show animation for one part at a time, make frequent exports and check it in MSTS to get the full picture.

I have bad news. I replaced the boiler, and centered the main part's axis to the origin, and MSTS doesn't like the engine anymore. I'm trying to reduce the polys to see if that will help. On a somewhat better note, the last time the engine worked in MSTS, the gear and axle were animated properly. I'm still trying to fix some things, and I'll post my progress again soon.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

The rods and such should not be linked directly to main but to the wheels or you will not be able to animate them correctly.
There is no need for every part to be linked directly to main as long as main is at the end of the parent links.

Luckily, the way I have the parts linged, the gear and its axle rotate correctly. Here is what the Atlantic currently looks like in MSTS! The second picture is the heads-out cabview. That explains a lot. I thought that parenting the rods to the wheels, that I would have them animated properly. I'll fix that, and have that finished soon. I'm going over the motion files for the piston rods, and I'm wondering if this would work for the motion files. The rod's orininal coordinates before animating are x (-1.75),y (4.75),and z (2).TSM Motion
1;-1.7500;4.7500;2.0000;

9;-1.7500;4.7500;2.0000;I know I'll have to change it for the second piston rod, but I was wondering if that was right for the first piston rod. For the second piston rod, I just need to change the x-coordinate to 1.75feet instead of -1.75 feetmrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

RE: Atlantic continued

Lets see now. Looking at one side of the engine we have a piston rod that goes up and down, that is pure motion. Next we have a connecting beam which pivots abouts it's cener or thereabouts, again, motion. Now we have the connecting rod from the beam to the gear wheel, or something like that. This is motion+rotation. Each part has to be animated individually.Now to the motion file, as long as both rods are moving up and down at the same time there should be no problem, just remember to name the file slightly different for the left and right hand rods. mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued

No special name needed, except for wheels. Whatever name you have given to the part will be used to identify the motion/rotation for that part. However, once you have animated a part do not rename it, or you will have to redo the animation, and re-export the model to check it in the sim.mervyn@madasafish.com
