Who wants one?
Who wants one with a working gypsy engine which runs when you turn on the "windshield wipers?"And who wants to do textures for it?
I bet I won't get many answers for that one.I just want to see how well-known it is. Who can name it?Hint: It was owned by the Elk River Mill & Lumber Company. It's the only rod driven locomotive specialized in logging service (that I am aware of). It was number 1.I'm just waiting for "Sure, I'll take one... But what on earth is it?Joel Lefever

RE: Who wants one?

VERY COOL!!! Yes, I'm familiar with gypsy rigged lokies. Quite a few Shays, Heislers, and Climaxes were rigged with a gypsy engine on the front for loading logs, and, of course, the very specialized little beast you've brought to life. Tim Muir and I, along with Jon Davis, are hoping to start work on Polson/Rayonier logging, in the next few weeks. I don't know if you've caught the threads, but Tim has made some nice high lead equipment for my SVRy, and Jon has made several donkey engines, one is even animated. I've done custom sound sources, with donkey whistles, engines, and machinery noise that randomly play at the landings. This little beauty would be another nice addition.

RE: Who wants one?

You are indeed correct, Okrasa. Timken: I didn't know there were other gypsy-rigged locomotives. That's interesting. Were there any other Falks? Believe it or not, the particular Falk this is based on is quite powerful for being less than 20 feet long, including the tender attached directly to the locomotive. I'm really interested in logging, especially Shays, and with the File Library having some nice models of the common ones, I figured I'd put in a rarer type. I can't wait to see your models be available.Joel Lefever

RE: Who wants one?

Ok, I'll tell you all I know about it. All I know is that I've never seen quite so small an 0-4-0 with no gypsy engine, but then again, I haven't seen many 0-4-0s. It would be true that the Falk would be still classified as a "switcher", but if it was the only one with a gypsy engine, especially if none existed at the time with a similar design minus the gypsy engine, it would be highly possible that that particular type of "switcher" was named after the first locomotive of its type. That was typical of many railroads. Not that you're wrong, I'm just saying what I've heard. Who knows, maybe someone else can give us an official answer.Who wants to do textures?!?Joel Lefever

RE: Who wants one?

Info from the Northern Counties Logging Interpretive Association; No. 1 Falk, Elk River Mill & Lumber Co., 9-ton 0-4-0, Marshutz & Cantrell, 1884. Believed to have been built by Marshutz & Cantrell (National Iron Works) in about 1882 in San Francisco.
This "gypsy" type locomotive was purchased by Noah Falk in San Francisco and shipped by vessel to Arcata, CA. It was first used at the Dolly Varden Mill in north Arcata until the mill was closed in 1885. In 1886 it was moved to Falk, California, for use on the Elk River Mill & Lumber Co. railroad. Logs were hauled from the woods to the mill. When the railroad was extended five miles up a narrow, winding canyon, a larger locomotive was purchased in 1903. The Falk was relegated to switching duties at the mill. In 1927 it was retired. The locomotive was given to the city of Eureka, California, for use in a 1936 Fourth of July parade operating on street car tracks. It was then displayed at Fort Humboldt and given to the State of California when the military fort became a state park. Restored by NCLIA volunteer labor and State Parks funding in 1986, it operates monthly during the summer at Fort Humboldt State Historic Park Logging Exhibit. Owned by California State Parks.

RE: Who wants one?

Wow awsome! Could you do a version without the winch thingy to go with this one?
That's one nifty little thing, but what was it used for?/JonatanSteam rules!Who wants one? – image 6

RE: Who wants one?

The winchy thingy? It was very useful. Obviously, the loco itself was not all that strong, although much stronger than it appears. The winchy thingy was useful because when the loco got to a campsite, mill, etc. it could pull logs around with the winch. If the winch didn't take up so much space, or didn't exist at all, the boiler would've probably been larger. Trust me, most logging railroads wouldn't get a locomotive built for them with no special abilities and an 8 foot long 3.5 foot diameter boiler. Because of that, I won't remove the engine on a model, but I might send you the TSM files to take it off yourself.I still need a decent texturer.Joel Lefever

RE: Who wants one?

Interesting, sometimes, if the railroad bought a more powerful locomotive to replace the engine, the boiler and winch would be removed and placed on a flat car or on logs to use as a Donkey Engine. (also known as a Donkengine)

RE: Who wants one?

We need to get a good logging railroad. With me developing my Strasburg Railroad, I don't really have much time, but in the future I could try a route like that. With the possibilities of a few shays, Okrasa's heisler, my Falk, various log cars, some logging speeders, and animated donkey engines, it could be quite a route. Somebody want to do a climax? And does anyone have an idea for a name for the route?Joel Lefever

>And does anyone have an idea for a name for the route?I know! How 'bout "Badger Valley Lumber Co." It's a fictous RR Co that I made up several years ago and I have already repainted a shay in it's livery./JonatanSteam rules!Who wants one? – image 7

RE: Who wants one?

Badger Valley? Sounds cool. I'll try to start it. I've previously done Tortoise Valley, but Badger sounds neat. If we already have a shay, I'll make the Falk into Badger Valley, and see who else wants to make Badger Valley repaints. Any ideas on:Location (U.S.A. state)
Length
Wealth (how good the condition of the railroad is)
Length
Other ideas?Who wants to make a lumber mill, or campsite, or whatever? I already have plenty of bridges.Joel Lefever

RE: Who wants one?

Hmm. Somewhere in the rockies perhaps? About 10-25 miles long and kinda worn down and overgrown. Very sharp curves and many deep valleys and steep grades. The logo would be a badger./JonatanSteam rules!Who wants one? – image 8

RE: Who wants one?

I like the Rockies idea, and I'm not very familiar with Pacific Northwest. I was thinking Colorado. I like Colorado's scenery. But if someone wants to send me some photos of scenery to work from at seres_fourth_dimension@yahoo.com, or someone else will offer to make the route (even better), I'd appreciate it. How's 5-10 miles sound? 20 miles would make a pretty big file in the downloads library. Thanks
