Hi,The first part of this conundrum is that I can't remember (and have read all the posting about animations on the forums and other sites)
how to get the fans to turn other than naming them as Wheel1 and Wheel2, the problem is that I want them to turn even when the unit is stopped and currently they turn only when it's in motion.....if anyone has info about this animation type please e-mail me at controll@direcway.com...thanksThe second issue has to do with a problem that Bob Boudoin was helping me on and I seemed to find a solution but then back into the same problem again....it has to do with the unit not negotiating a 45 degree yard curve on my test layout....I used a WAG file from my F38 flatcar and it would not go around the curve (a rubberband efect happens when it gets 3/4 of the way through the curve and it is pulled back to the start of the track piece) this happens with several of my rolling stock units but not the engines.....well, I
used a WAG file from my Boxcars that I created and the problem was gone....So You Say Just Use That File All The Time!!!....not so fast weedhoppers.....I took the entries from the boxcar file and altered the F38 file to look exactly as the boxcar WAG file line for line....My thinking was that it should work the same but it did not...the car exhibited the same rubberband effect as before ....but the WAG file code was identical line for line as the Boxcar.WAG that worked well with no alterations....why!!!
I examined the lines in each file and they matched perfectly not one error and the sizes were identical.....what gives? In a simulation the object that you create only gets reacted upon by the sim by how the files that describe it tell the sim how to react to it....a case in point is that an aerodynamic shape such as a jet plane would file beautifully within the sim as long as the files described the parameters....and as such a brick would fly like the jet if the same files were used.So my delima is that if I use the same parameters within a file and get differing results what is the simulation reacting upon...the files or the objects...???? Any help with this issue is grealy appreciated. To give some aid to your help I tried these fixes on the model before using a different WAG file....
Resized the trucks and wheels to fit within the rail heads....no change
Resized the bounding box of the unit and the curve....no change
Eliminated the bounding boxes of both.....no change
Elevated the unit above the railheads....no change
Changed the weight of the unit (lighter)...no changeWhen I use the original Boxcar.WAG file the unit hitches some but goes thru the curve...when I make a existing WAG file to contain the same parameters of the Boxcar.WAG file it rubberbands....I am mystified why an engine with 3 axles per truck and about double the weight of the unit can glide effortlessly thru the curves without any power (coasting) and this rolling stock has such a problem......another bug within MSTS...maybe.I have included a pic of the testcar I am using and if I get it fixed it will lead to the U50B having working fans and a see-thru body.Rick

Well, to begin with, if you can find something that turns "all the time", then attach you fans to those parts. Kind of like the quest for the Holy Grail... It should be out there, but nobody has found it. (Just because it wasn't *coded* in the SIM shouldn't stop us... <Evil Grin>) The closest we can get to that is the Wheel animations so far... You can do neat effects with other stuff too, for example, I attached the articulated piping on my GATX Tank Train to the bogies to create the illusion that the pipes between the cars was attached and flexible. The other problem seems to be fixable with WAG adjustments... but don't look at me for answers.

RE: A two part issue.....Bob Boudoin and others

Hi Rick,
I have been scratching my head on this and no obvious solution has appeared. I just have a gut feel that something in the .s file is behind this, But I surely don't know what would correct it. The .wag file does not seem to be the problem, and your tests seem to confirm that?? It is probably some of those kryptonite couplers everyone is using, must be throwing the earth off its rotational axis..hehe??? I wish I had a good suggestion, but nothing I have tried seems to make any difference?
Sorry,
Bob

RE: A two part issue.....animation solution(?)

The only animation available that runs independent of loco (diesel/electric) speed is the window wipers animation (parts), altho you hv to toggle them on / off with the wiper key.The sim is flexible enough to allow you to use components of the wiper system as fans and you can use rotation animation. Of course, using up some of the wiper objects means you might only have one set of operating wipers.Hope this helps.Cheers Bazza

Thanks Guys,I had a suspicion that I had tested all the avenues of animations and found none suitable....too bad maybe MSTS2 will have an answer.Bob, I can't see anything in the S file or in 3DC that would make this kind of a difference on a model....maybe it is just a bug and never to be fixed....Thanks again for the fast responses.Rick

RE: A two part issue.....Bob Boudoin and others

Hithe "rubberband efect" efect is caused by incorect setings in the wag/eng file for Couplings and related info entrys.the prob afect the Size,InertiaTensor,Coupling r0 values.the cause is the length from the bogie pivot point to the buckeye center, or the 1st/last wheel on a rigid vs the 1st and 2nd r0 values vs Size vs InertiaTensor vs 30cm Minimum couple distance vs 60cm Maximum couple distance vs "Centre, Radius & Angle"1st your InertiaTensor value should be the same size as the length from buckeye center to buckeye center.2nd your 1st r0 value should be as long as posable but MUST less than <60cm. #3rd your Size should be your "InertiaTensor value" less your 1st "r0 value".4th your 2nd r0 value should be grater than >1st r0 value.5th the length size in the sd file should be the wag,eng Size /2, or opticly size to to main body volume less cupalings, you should have apx 1m or more bitween ajoining wagons or loco for the BBox's, "ctrl" + "kpad +" is usefull.# if 1st r0 value is grater than 60cm then *30cm is removed from the frunt of the wagon/loco witch canot be ajusted back! , if "30cm Minimum couple distance" is changed in the default.wag then *30cm is removed from the rear of the wagon/loco witch canot be ajusted back!
how ever if you have a loco witch is long or swings out lots on turns and you DONT wish to use the frunt cupaling on it then you can make the 1st r0 value >60cm to >6m long if you wish, you just have to ajust the size value vs 1st r0 value in the eng file to reflect this thow the calculation of the size is not as easy as keeping it below 60cma 1st r0 value of >50cm to <60cm should be plenty for most >22m loco/wagons to get threw 45deg yard curves with out bouncing around.my final tip is for forces vs time vs length in Couplings sections, there is no nead to use n/m or n/m/s use native values to you or units you are familuar with or the value you wont to hapen.
eg: if you wont 400000lb of force to take place in 8" of movement then use eather 400000lb/8in or 4e5lb/8in or 4e5lb/20.32cm or 4e5lb/0.6666ft or 181488.2kg/230mm and so on.B101UK

npbtw if you go to the end ctrl section of the eng file and look for "Wipers ( 0 1 0 )" and change to "Wipers ( 0 1 1 )" to have the wipers start in the on position by defualt(still switchable) or change to "Wipers ( 1 1 1 )" to have them stay on permantly (non switchable) good for permanantly on fans or other anomationsb101uk
