To whom it may concern, (I have had 6 Fat Tires tonight and I am going to speak my mind!) Look, we appreciate the locos but the truth is we do not need anymore packs of friggin Geep's or F units! Especially friggin GP9's, 7's and 20's. The market is overflowing with EMD switchers and F units! There are plenty of Geep's and F units. Let's move onto something more significant. I own them all and need no more. Here are some ideas of locos that will sell and that the people really want.#1- A pay ware quality C44-9 or DASH 9. The one that came with MSTS has its limitations; hence all the repaints suffer from the same. (Those AC4400's by the Fawson kid are great though!)
#2- Some love for the damn GE's. The only pay ware version to date is the MLT C30's. What's up with that? How bout some professional U-Boats, or a C44-8 that looks good.
#3- Remember Alco! Only Gaeten B. had done an Alco 6-axle that is truly good.
#4-Some quality EMD 50's, 60’s (Oakway for sure). and 70's in the standard cab Also a pay ware SD80 and 90MAC would be nice.Freeware guys don't take offense, there is a great amount of quality stuff out there and you know who you are. Developers take note, I own almost all of the after market routes and loco add-ons, therefore I reserve the right to complain and suggest.
Peace out
Pete

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-03 AT 03:35 PM (EDT)

Pete:Creating model locomotives for MSTS either as Freeware or Payware is an immense amount of work. It entails a broad spectrum of tasks that includes detailed research, the actual making and texturing of the units and then recreating the workings of the units - sounds, cabs, engine and lighting specifications. There are very few people who can do all of these by themselves, and fewer still who have all the requiste software needed to make all of the needed component parts. And, then also to consider is that everyone's skillset and interest are different. When it comes down to it, both freeware and especially payware developers of models do need to consider a "return on investments". For payware developers, they have business expenses and capital outlays to recover and hence it makes good sense for them to concentrate on models which they know will be popular and will be a good return for their investment.Freeware developers, and I cannot speak for all as everyone is different, often have to invest the time initially to learn the craft, invest money in the basic software needed and then the effort to make the models. It seems natural then that most will tend to concentrate initially on what interests them the most. Given the amount of time needed to create the models, even freeware developers are driven to an extent by real economic forces - ultimately the only real return for the efforts of Freeware developers is the amount of downloads that their models get as in general this is the only way for them to know whether of not what they are doing is right or in demand. There are few people, especially freeware developers who have other real-life factors such as jobs and families, who are willing to invest precious free-time plus the time and effort on a model that will only attract the attention of only a handful of people. That said, it would probably also be true to say that freeware developers are more likely to take that kind of a risk especially if they have a personal passion or interest in a particular type of unit. Thus, it is very important that those who actually uses the models on offer, both freeware and payware, to voice their opinions. Especially helpful will be thoughts on what you want, like, dislike or hope to happen in the train-simulator scene. Not everyone has the desire to build models, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just because you like to run trains, does not mean you need to be able to build or texture them.Thank-you for this starting this thread. I for one will give it serious thought and will keep what you have asked for in mind when considering future projects. I am also confident that there other developers who will make similar notes. I am sure that it will get a few people thinking, and some most likely will take up your suggestion and you may soon have on offer in the download library what you seek.

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

all I have to say is Beggers cant be Choosers begg all you want you still wont get it. its like I asked for someone to devolope a really good model of a Piper Comanche for Flight Sim and that was about 4 years ago... guess what I am still waiting... oh there are a few out but they hardly look like a Comanche and Still I wait but maby my patients will pay off one of these years lol. Speeking for one of those who wish I had the Skills and the programs needed there are a few locomotives I would like to see but I will just except what comes down the pipes as most of them are good models. If I got my way there would only be Steam Locomotives but that would be unfair to the others on what they want. all I hope is maby some of the New Locomotives that are out will be painted in UP colors but by the way people are talking how UP is on there Logo it may not happin so guess I will have to find a new favorite Rail Road
I have learnd not to complain and I also learned to stop asking just put pictures up of what you want but dont tell them you want it maby someone will make it if they like it enuf lolDon Pottorff

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

I've given thought to its cousin the Southern Pacific(SP)/Overland(UP) depending upon your loyalties. The big hold up is I have never seen any images or models of working Gresley valve gear, although with some of the diagrams I have I can probably do a good approximation. The problem is that there are so many locomotives so little time. As for the start of this thread there are many people around here that would be willing to help you learn 3dc or Gmax. TSM is a joke as far as I'm concerned it is easy to learn but you can out grow it very quickly. I kept TSM on my computer for all of 3 months before switching to canvas and I haven't looked back since.

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

Pete
I'm not going to tell you to do it yourself ,just a bit of perspective from a developer.
I tend to focus on items that my favorite road had or scenery objects that I need for the route I'm building and I look at it as I need it, I'll build it,I'll share it. but even for us freeware guys it's a bit of work involved and needless to say we focus on subjects that peak our interests, I'm currently beating my head against the wall on a GSI bulkhead flatcar that's UIDing me to the point I want to yank my hair out, this is not the kind of aggrivation I'd put myself through if I didn't think the project was worth it.
But I've been looking at the possibility of some big Alco power down the road (provided these UID errors don't make me put a fist through my monitor).Gary S

Bravo PeteI think we need more people like you around here who call a spade a spade. For those people you tell you to try it yourself, just think of all the railfans that offer there "educated" opinion on how railways operate. Are they ever going to get a job with the railway...I think not. Are they going to continue to offer their supposed "expert" opinion...I think so.It doesn't seem you have a problem offering your opinion...too bad many people seem to be afraid to do so.Excellent ideas in your post. If more developers would listen maybe they would be rolling in the money. That "customer service" idea seems to be a bit lacking in the MSTS world sometimes.- Andrew

Well Andrew, I worked for a U.S. railroad..a little longer than most, and I can tell you many stories, many that you young pups have no idea. It looks to be there is a lack of respect around here for those who have offered much freely and generously.

It's fine to offer opinions and comments..but the attitude of several young ones here, and several older ones as well leave much to be desired. This is a free hobby for the most part..the key being "hobby".Again I say, if Pete or anyone else on this site does not like what's here, then why don't you make it yourself.'nuff said.

Dear Henry Ford,
There are too many Model T's. They all look the same why don't you make something different? Do you think a Henry would have said, "Hey Pete, get a lathe and some metal and go make your own."
Dear Dave,
We think the Wendy's single is too small; can you make a double or a triple? Would Dave say,"Hey kid, get a grill and some burger and make you own." I think not.Look you freeware guys make some great stuff for your own reasons. I ain't out to get you or anyone for that matter. I know you could care less what I think and I could care less what you make. As for the professionals out there, you guys have got to move on. To date only Dekosoft and MLT have "sold" 6-axle modern diesels. In short you have drummed 4-axle switchers and F units into the ground! Again I reserve the right to complain and suggest because I own them.Respectfully,

Here goes...Think:FA's, VO's, C-420's, More F's and Geeps in MY favorite roads... etc, etc, etc! Gimme' them oldies. Oh sure SOMEDAYS I run the modern stuff... and it's okay. Marc,
I own several of your products and no doubt they are really good. But I have all I need. As for the SD70 and SD75 (I own this route also) I never cared for these and forgot to mention them. I replaced them with the TA SD70's and unless they look better in Tehachapi II, they will also be deleted.
As for freelance freeware guy: Just because you labor for hours and offer up your stuff for free, don't shoot the messenger. I never called out a single one of you. You guys are overly sensitive and jump at the first chance to torch anyone who is not willing to praise you for your unselfish labors. If some of you guys were not so thin skinned maybe you could work on your creations and get paid. Truth is some of you cannot stand the least bit of criticism. I imagine if you worked for a developer you would storm out of the office the first time someone suggested something to you."Nuff said"

>But I have all I need. That's cool. Some folks buy one set and it might turn out it's one set too many. There are a few though, that continue to buy whatever Geep and/or F-set I put up for sale. I can't do all, and I know I there's a limit to the number of F's and Geeps, but I will continue to make new sets and support the ones already released, and also continue on the 1st-generation diesel path. Why should I work on something unless I have a passion for it? >I never called out a single one of you.Except you said: "we do not need anymore packs of friggin Geep's or F units!"You may not have typed 3DTrains or 3D-Perfection, but who else makes "packs" of geeps and/or F's? Since most of my items are in "SuperPacks", and I personally make both Geeps and F's (and Patrick at 3D-P does GP9's and GP20's), how else was I to take your meaning except as hostel or frustrated that I haven't made what you want? My apologies if I misunderstood your meaning.>Truth is some of you cannot stand the least bit of criticism.I can't speak for anyone, but myself. I don't have a problem with criticism on my models. If you have a problem with them, then I'll attempt to adjust them to satisfy your needs and expectations. However, I won't stand by while someone preaches on how I should run my business. It's just that - my business and not open for debate. Most everything else is open season though, and I will listen to and consider the arguments presented - provided they're done so in a civil manner. Cheers!

>"Nuff said" Don IMO you are way off base here and the better part of valor would be for you to admit it and back down....I've stayed out of this so far because I "thought" what you were trying to say was that although you had "no talent" and therefore were unable to contribute materially to the hobby you were getting bored with the seeming blandness, in your opinion, of the offerings by the various modelers..... An opinion you are certainly entitled to. As we are certainly entitled to take umbrage at the way you expressed yourself! You were looking for a little variety and found a uniquely annoying way to express your desire for more variety....The payware guys go where the money is, with in reason! They also have personal interests that push them in certain directions and most have a special area of interest.Us Freeware Slugs are beholding to no one and build what ever the hell we want to. The key being "We Want To"! You get to vote by spending or with holding your purchases of payware products and downloading or not of freeware products...You don't get to criticize us for failing to provide what ever personal weirdness is your fetish in trains. Note: I said you can express an opinion that every one seems to be building the same thing (which is probably because 90% of us like similar things) but not to castigate us for not adhering to your wishes..If there is something specific you could ask for it...
If its overall blandness, And I personally don't see how you could have that opinion given the breadth of content on here, then "Your opinion is noted! Who gives a $hit?" and we'll just move on!You might consider learning one of the creative arts so you can model or failing that do what some of your follow Railroaders have done by contributing as a researcher to various modeling groups... Stu Guberman of Metro North comes immediately to mind and there are many others.... We at NALW would be completely lost with out their help!Flame off!Chuck Schneider

Marc,
Your CS is noted (Customer service) as always. Your stuff is great; I own at least 7 of your packs. I just would like to buy some 6-axles.As for Chuck,
"Your opinion is noted! Who gives a $hit?" and we'll just move on!
My sentiments exactly. I don't care what turns your crank and I don't expect anyone to care what turns mine. I just tried to state an opinion. My skin is thick and I am not the least offended by the opinions being thrown at me. I welcome the free exchange of blasts. It takes away from the labor spent on the seemingly, unending, recycled 4-axle market.Sincerely,

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

I thought I was the head $hit stirrer? Some of us are just not big GE or Alco fans. Give me an SD45 anyday and you can stick all the GE's where the sun don't shine. I take what is offered and use them. I do ask for specific models\skins at times, but there is always a reason behind it, I need it for an activity I want to do.Of all the GE's out there, and there are not many, I WILL use one from ARF,Pete, or Jason, not many others. Why you ask? Glad you did. Cause they offer top of the line models. But still comes down to the question - GP9 or RS3 - GP9 wins hands down. The best thing I can tell you is if you want more GE's, learn to make them. I did not like the type of activites that were being offered so I learned to make them. I am still learning.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

Chuck sorry it seems you think I am that other guy cause you are calling him Don I can see the confuision there my talent is in Repaints for flightsim and I have done my share of them.
I too have taken my critisim for them however I could care less what others think all I made them for was myself and I only Considered myself in making them... however I uploaded them thinking there were a few others out there who wanted to have them two and I made them availible on flighsim. now from time to time I have gone to see howmany downloaded them and my helicopter got over 400 downloads and that makes me happy considering it took me about 5 hours to repaint it.
however my other repaints took about 5 min and it was due to the cut and paste just put differant numbers on a Corsiar for my squadron and the critism I got for them are a non issue. they however look as the real ones from the real squadron looked and I am happy with them I am happy with all your works I have downloaded sure I like some and dislike others but instead of complaining about the ones I dont like I will just not use them.
you guys keep on making what suites you to make that you want yourselves and dont listen to these people who want to much of youDon Pottorff

RE: OPEN LETTER TO LOCO DEVELOPERS

Paul,You said that you worked for a Railroad Company for a long time? Just curious... What company?I am a die-hard Pennsylvania Railroad fan, and although I am not old enough to have worked for the Proud PRR, I wished i would have gotten the chance to be. For some reason, I am locked into a period during the late steam era, when most of my favorite engines were still running proudly over many of the lines.

A) They like to produce them.
And,
B) Us fans of Geep's or F's keep buying them. >Here are some ideas of locos that

RE: Matters in my own hands!

Marc,
It is a coupler to 6-axle, modern diesel locomotive. Possible part of the 3dtrains future U-Boat release.
Or a computer animated hand of a man holding a "Fat Tire" which started this whole thread.Pete
