Aug-08-01, 06:27 PM (EST) "Breakthrough in Blurred textures" I am totally excited!!!No more Blurred Textures or Moire Patterns!!!!!We've been working on our OWN exporter to take care of the blurring textures - take a look. The one on the left is before. The one on the right is with Trainartisan technology. I'm glad to say that we'll have this quality in all releases from www.trainartisan.comMessage Areas - "Breakthrough in Blurred textures" – image 1

Aug-08-01, 08:37 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" Now THAT's the way textures should look, very nice. I share RailHig's sentiments, but if for some reason you prefer to keep the converter exclusively a trainartisan feature, then perhaps you would be willing to convert textures for others when you get the chance. I would be proud to add "textures converted by Trainartisan technology" in my readmes Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 11:11 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" Our solution doesn't require the most powerful consumer card set on the most powerful options. Our pictures were taken on a Geforce1 without any special drivers other than the latest plain one. We're going to beta test the solution on other cards as well. Because of this, the frame rates don't drop and you can maintain your original performance.

We had to develop this solution because we are putting SO much detail into the texture maps - rivits and side panel fluting. We've written export tools that will handle our level of detail. We're also working out a way that gives people access to the technology when they re-skin the ESE 16 car passenger set.

I still believe that we've got a solution that will make the textures look better on many graphic cards out there. Most of the people out there can't afford high-end cards and we want to make our visuals available to almost anyone...

We're still excited!

Aug-09-01, 09:31 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" Guys, I hope trainartisan.com has come up with some extremely clever solution, but I did download Rivatuner tonight..and was AMAZED at the quality of the changes. Rivatuner is freeware
that unlocks certain features of the nvidia registry entries that are not documented. I just did the default changes, and immediately saw the same change that the screen shot at the top of this page showed. I run a GeForce2 card...not a Geforce 3.
Anybody using Nvidia detonator drivers can see some improvement
in texture quality, though possibly at the expense of frame rate.
I didnt see this though. However I run an Athlon 1.1 Ghz processor with 384MB of SDRAM and a 64MB Geforce2 vid card. Im using latest via drivers and latest 12.90 detonator drivers.Just do a search for "riva tuner" and you'll find the site that
has this. If trainartisan has other tweaks, I cant wait to use
BOTH!!!!!!!Eric

Aug-10-01, 02:08 AM (EST) 18. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" The Trainartisan solution does not require tweaks to the Nvidia drivers. We actually unlock functions that are already in MSTS that deal with texture quality and rendering. We can dial in the quality per object or per texture or both. We can have all of these show-up in the same scene at the same time...I think we even found out how to get wire-frame rendering to show up per object per texture...why would you want to do this?..I don't know...I think that we stumbled onto some cheat code stuff as well....We'll be doing a beta tests on other cards as well to check the quality and performance.I still think that we have a solution that can work for everybody, regardless of the video card... Aug-12-01, 05:37 AM (EST) 26. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" Actually, I don't see the reason for negativity....I develop technology for products that I make available for free. I'm not really trying to sell anything really. It is incredible to me that I can give to the community, but there are some who always want more or rather, demand more.
Maybe I'm missing something, is this a right that you were given?Check out www.trainartisan.com - no banner ads, no click and vote for me on a best site list. No visit my sponsor. What you do get is a website created by a hobbyist for other hobbyists. On the site are tutorials which take you step by step through using 3DSMAX4 and exporting to MSTS. They are high quality, screenshot rich tutorials that are part of an on-going series. I hope to add to these tutorials with information about .eng editing, sound editing, etc. I created these tutorial because of all of the questions that I see on these message boards. I do them to help the community - to hopefully increase the quality and quantity of the add-ons because now, people will know some good techniques. Not to mention, I've released the Empire State Express add-on locomotive as a free download. The add-on itself isn't an ordinary hobbyist hack either. I included a bullet-proof install program(It won't let you install into an incorrect directory), the first import of new original sound files, premade consist files, and modified activites so that anyone can download, install, and run the Empire State Express without having to copy files here and there, edit.eng files, etc.Again, I did this because of all of the complaints and confusion that others have had with other add-ons that were posted to these message boards.Posting the technology for the textures was something I did because people expressed interest in knowing what's going on with trainartisan. It's not a secret how I accomplished it.....I worked hard to write and research my own export tools that fixed the deficiencies that were inherent in the MSTS tools. If you're looking for the answer, that's it. Write your own exporter and you can do the texture stuff too.As far as the technology only showing up on trainartisan locomotives and consist, why not....the texture technology isn't the only unique thing about our locos and consists - the modelling and the texturing are also things you won't find on other add-ons. Take a look at the detailed metal look of the passenger cars. Nobody has come up to me saying "why does this metal texture look only show up on trainartisan stuff? - it's an outrage!!"As far as the technology being for sale. Don't worry, it'll never happen. I don't want to sell it. I don't intend on selling it. I didn't develop it to sell in the first place. I developed it so I could use it to create stuff to match my own expectations of what an add-on should have.I just don't see the negativity in the situation. I'm just another hobbyist.....creating things that make me happy... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-12-01, 10:09 AM (EST) 27. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" I respect your decision to keep the converter "in house" Acylum. I can't even imagine how much work must have gone into creating a new converter. I'm just an artist, so programming software is beyond my abilities and interests and I will decline the suggestion to write my own. Believe me, I did some searching on the subject and after numerous pages full of D3D SDK info, VC++ stuff, and other directX programming material, I opened my PSP up and went back to what I do best, making textures. I will release my work with blurry textures. I am not happy with the way they look, but I accept the limitations imposed by the game's tools, I have no choice. Aug-12-01, 02:24 PM (EST) 28. "You missed your political calling..." Owning a game company gives you access to programming resources few have. You needn't defend your position about your work. Some here only asked for clarification as to whether you would share this technology for other to create their own high-end models. You mentioned *undocumented* items in MSTS, which I (and perhaps others) took to mean you would keep this info to yourself.I'm interested in dabbling in creating a free model or two - If you choose to not share info on how I might better my own models, then what motivation do I have in continuing; knowing that all the while, and no matter how good a modeler I am, that it will never be perfect. However, if you told me the info was burried in the S file for example, then I would tinker with the file until I was satisfied I did everything I was able to do, and move on.Sharing tools is not the issue - whether you would hint as to where to look for answers is.Jerry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-12-01, 03:00 PM (EST) 29. "RE: You missed your political calling..." Well, here's what got me started. I was looking through the message boards and someone mentioned that the locos that shipped with MSTS didn't have the same blurring problems as the locos that users have created. Now, I could have said the same thing that you said, "What could motivate me to keep modeling if I could never achieve the perfection that MSTS was able to."Instead, I set-out to figure out why....I wasn't willing to give up - I knew it could be done. By posting and showing others that it can be done by someone outside of MSTS, I figured, that it alone could inspire people to dig deeper. Hey, after-all, I'm pretty sure it was scary for the first person to climb Mount Everest. Once people saw that it could be done, they became inspired to climb bigger mountains.Innovation serves a greater purpose as a source of inspiration.I still think it's a positive thing to do. On the other hand, I still don't see why you're so negative and cynical...just look at the title of the post you made...Don't give up so easily...get inspired....explore, learn, strive...Maybe you can also obtain a positive outlook as well. Aug-12-01, 07:48 PM (EST) 31. "RE: You missed your political calling..." I understand your point of view on this, but i am one of those that do not have the time anymore to learn a programming language. I can build these machines, install software, configure servers, etc, but when it comes to giving the machine coded instructions, i am admittedly clueless! The last programming language i learned for the PC was BASIC!
I know the hard work that goes into something like this, and i appreciate the work you have done, i really do! But seeing as i will never be able to do something like this, i do see the other point of view that it gets discouraging releasing the work i have done as it will now be viewed as "sub-par", and quite frankly in comparison looks like crap. Since i can imagine how much work went into your utility, that is why i would gladly offer money for the ability to use it. That way i would be able to post models that look at least "on-par" and you would get something for the time you put in to making the conversion.
I guess i can now only hope that someone, sometime soon will create their own version of a utility like yours, and would at the least be willing to sell it.------- BUZZ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-13-01, 09:03 AM (EST) 32. "RE: You missed your political calling..." But the people who climbed Mt. Everest first didn't say "look what I did! And I'm not telling you how I got there! Nyh Nyh".Its not that big a deal however folks IMHO. Its never actually stated that the ACE files are modified, and making this available to re-skinners and not others implies that it is in the model and not the ACE. I'd suspect there is a different shader they're using which ignores the mip-maps built into the ACE file. Just decompile the .s files for some of the kuju locos using kuju's utility and see what shader they use vs which one the max utility assigns by default. If however it is a mipmapless ACE or other variant then that is solvable also. I have most of the format for a standard uncompressed ACE so figuring out the compressed ones used by kuju shouldn't take much more work. Course I'd rather spend my time helping Railtester get good terrain built for his NYC water level route so those fine hudsons have a place to run, but I guess sacrifices have to be made. Don't you see what you have done here? You are the first to release a REALLY GOOD downloadable add-on as a self extracting executable that downloads and installs PERFECTLY with NO, NADA, labor or grief on the end user. That is _very rare_. I am quite shocked that you got into MSTS/KUJU code as quickly as you did. Jeeze, I wish I ran a software firm. You would be my lead programmer in a heartbeat. VERY VERY good work here.

Aug-10-01, 01:25 PM (EST) 24. "RE: Breakthrough in Blurred textures" Yeah, but to re-skin TrainArtisan consists! And it will be pretty easy to tell if the tool is being used for OTHER skins as they won't blur like others. That will result in a war. I've seen it before.
I personally would PAY, yes PAY to be able to use this technology for all the stuff i am doing! And not a mere $10 either, i'm talking $30-$50 range! It would be worth it, as that to me is a lot cheaper than a week and a half of my time, which is what i spent just trying to REDUCE the blur only a bit on my baggage car! Amtrak has Heritage baggages, coaches, diners, lounges, sleepers, Amfleet I coaches, food service cars, Amfleet II coaches, foodservice cars, Horizon coaches, food service cars, Viewliner sleepers, diner, Superliner I coaches, coach baggages, coach smokers, diners, sightseer lounges, sleepers, Superliner II coaches, sleepers, deluxe sleepers, sightseer lounge cars, diners, and transition cars, and i plan eventually to do all of em. Now, take a week and a half per car type (sort of), and you can see why even $50 would be a good investment! C'mon guys, you have a winning product here! Help us out! Even make some $$ on the side if you want!------- BUZZ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
