Please Help!!! I've got a 108' molten metal car with 16 axels, so I want to model it as a schnabel. I thought I understood how to do it, but from the attached picture, you can see I'm lost. I'm modeling in TSM. First I built the model as it would look finished. I then broke it into seven (7) sections. I loaded the whole model and then deleted all but a section at a time and then saved each section individually and exported them to MSTS. There's obviously something key I'm missing. I really want to get this thing going--after all, if I can get this figured out, I can produce other schnabel cars as well. The only section in the car that actually exhibited any overlap was the first section--which is almost totally embedded in the loco itself! Again, I need any and all help I can get.Dave

RE: Schnabel Trouble

What's the problem? Looks great! Seriously, I'm not a car builder so I have no idea what the problem is.What you do have is looking good and I hope you get it figured out because I'm looking forward to it. The more Schnabels the better! I've been having a lot of fun pulling Rick's Schnabels around.

RE: Schnabel Trouble

Hey Dave,What you have there is what looks like WAG file size problems....each piece must be only as large as it's portion of the whole model....here's an example....Your whole model size is say 108 ftthe first piece should be 8 to 10ftthe next piece should be 10 to 20ftthen the load is 35ft or something like this......What you end up with is all 7 WAG files that make up your model add up to the whole model length....108ft.And to get it to look right you adjust each piece individually in the WAG size so that they fit together as a whole unit properly.
Also each piece might need its center adjusted to look properly...you have to mess with WAG and center to get the unit to fit and look good.....Hope this helps some more....Rick

RE: Schnabel Trouble

Dave, If you can't get it figured out, send me the unit as a ZIP file with SD S and WAG files and I will mess with it to get it right for you....also I need the ACE files.....my e-mail does not accept anything larger thatn 2mb maximum....so break the file into small parts if needed.Rick

RE: Schnabel Trouble

Thanks Rick, I think your latest info has got me on the right track. Here's my latest pic--It's not there yet, but I'm getting close. I think I need to get some sleep now, since tomorrows's a work day!!! I still need to shift my bogies more toward each end of the platforms. Again, thanks for taking that extra time to help me out. Dave

Dave,The way this type of model works is shown in the pic below.....The red arrows show where the CENTERS of each piece are to be placed (approximately)The Green dashes show where the SIZE of the model should be at (estimated)So even though a piece say your deck ends are about 25ft in length, on the models WAG file they might only be 3ft/1 meter...so that they overly the bogies properly....if you create each piece and then in the WAG file make it the exact size it is in reality...MSTS treats this as the dimensions and that is why your model is not fitting properly. Also the pivot points for the bogies and the other parts are as follows...Bogies pivot at their CENTERS of their plateLoad pivots at its ENDSDecking pivots at the OUTER END near the coupler and under the ENDS of the Load...use invisible bogies for this effect to work right and no trucks....just bogies (invisible)This way the articulation of the unit looks like it should and pieces don't move away from each other the wrong way.Let me know if you need something more.....Rick

RE: Schnabel Trouble

Well Rick, here's my latest pic. I need some more detail, and I'll probably have to model a new set of trucks. I used one truck for all the sets. Unfortunately, the two trucks I reversed now have reverse wheel rotation. So I'll probably go with two truck#1 facing forward and two truck#2 facing to the rear so all the wheels rotate in the same direction. Thanks for all your help. It was your explanations that finally got me through it. Oh, by the way, I didn't animate the platforms (the long pieces with the couplers). Every time I did, as soon as the sim started, the cars uncoupled. Well here it is.Dave

RE: Schnabel Trouble

Hi,why tearing it apart?make it one wagon with two bogies or, at maximum three parts, one middle part and the first and third with two bogies each. That'a also easier consist building. This one has three parts:Schnabel Trouble – image 6Volker
