I'm working on a way to simulate the sounds of an oil-burner and stoker-fed locos through mods to the .sms files. Nothing exciting is required: after removing the stream associated with coal shoveling, I am replacing it with a sequential loop file that is triggered by the "r" key. Currently I am testing with a single .wav file for a sander which is not too bad a substitute for an oil blower. Since there is but a single file, there is no way to simulate an increased rate of feed, so the trigger is actually functioning as a discrete trigger. There is no way around the fact that the firebox door has to be open (with the associated draft implications) in order to turn the blower on. But by making some changes in the coal burnage numbers and the increments to the "shoveling rate", I am moderately happy with the results so far and will plan to post more info after further testing. Does anyone have .wav files of a working stoker or oil blower that they would be willing to post in the library? If no one has any stoker sounds, I may attempt to make a recording to simulate the effect this weekend using gravel instead of coal.
Sounds good Bill! It would be nice to lose the shovel thing on big steamers. You're right about the oil burners. I've thought about that one too, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get a blower noise without the firebox doors open, even though on oil burners they are seldom opened at all. What about wood burners? you wouldn't by any chance have a sound of logs being tossed into a firebox would you? Grizzly
Grizzly, Look in the sound library. I posted sounds for woodburners a couple of months ago. My son and I recorded the sounds of tossing fireplace logs into a pile at the house here so its not perfect, but so far is the best thing available (!). The files are named the same as the coal-burner files to make substitution easy. I run two woodburners here frequently (small locos are my favorites) over an NG route than a friend is developing.

Anybody have one of those cast iron wood burning stoves? I think that would give a passable simulation.-Jeff
I tested both the oil blower and the stoker (I found a file to work with for the stoker) and both are working well. Will post more detail tomorrow on the .sms changes needed.
