GMAX Bible is now available – image 1

The book, GMAX Bible is now available for off the shelf purchase at Barnes and Noble. I just picked my copy up this evening. It's "THICK". (850 pages)Sadly, it has discussions about specific games, but only TRAINZ with regards to Train Simulators. It merely says that they are similar so they won't both be covered... though it does say that the MSTS GAMEPAK is closer to Flightsim's not Trainz. It is LOADED with good GMAX info. Due to it's size... it will set you back about $44. from what I've read so far... it's a little on the Wordy side... but still worth the cash IMHO.

I thought you didnt like gmax Pete Is that book just a reference or a start to finish learning guide?Though I am more intrested into 3ds not gmax.I have seen the unix bible around however.Thats pretty good for that price ignoring the xchange rate, my universirty books are/were 100 au each and i now have 2 damm boxes of em, apart from a few of them they are not very good. (Would have much rather bought the dummies/idiots books and bibles but not up to me...)=============

It answers a lot of questions... but I suggest reading it front to back, small section at a time (otherwise it becomes a "bed time story", know what I mean?). The reason I say this is it is writtem more like a classroom text book versus a reference manual. I'm sure that was the author's intention... since that's how all the other "bible" books are written as well.So... In summary:The GMAX BIBLE is loaded with good, useful, generic GMAX "info" but like all the other Bible books... it's wordy and not written as much as a tutorial as it is a "brain dump". It's a very useful gap filler since GMAX "REALLY" does assume you already know 3D Studio MAX version 4.Dominic...My 3D CANVAS convictions aren't loaded with religious zeal...I'm always willing to look at what's available...and I continue to use 3D CANVAS after looking around. FYI:
I'm currently following Def Leppard around to a number of tour dates... using the GMAX bible to occupy my time away from the computer.

RE: GMAX Bible is now available

I got the GMAX Bible 2 weeks ago and it's not a bad book, but I kind of wished the tutorials and example exercises were a little more involved. There's alot of reading in-between "sessions" concerning explaination and guides. The book does indeed clarify alot of issues with me concerning several functions I was confused about. I downloaded the HELP/Tutorial files from the GMAX site before the book, and was using that to "self-train". I just didn't like the swapping of windows to read "this" to swap back to GMAX and to do "that"...somewhat tiresome. To big (for me anyway) to print it out. But the book lets' me stay focused on the exercise at hand without losing my train of thought or swapping windows. One really needs to take their time and read in between exercises and perhaps do them over a few times without the book...better for the memory in my case. I'm about a 1/3 through the book and have learned quite a bit as so far...taking my time. The CD is a nice addition and I do agree with the sediments from Pete concerning the "lack" of working information concerning MSTS. You do receive all the GMAX game paks including Train-Sim, however I haven't loaded it yet since I feel I need more "training". Anyway...the book is a good asset for GMAX users and potential users, but like I said, I just wish the exercises were a bit more involved with the "zillion" functions that GMAX has and I hope you like to do alot of reading. RE: GMAX Bible is now available

Would it be possible for someone who has this book to scan the table of contents and post them for us all to see what sort of material this book covers. And possibly the front cover too. That might give some of us a small idea if it's something we could use or not. Thanks.GMAX Bible is now available – image 9

RE: GMAX Bible is now available

I model exclusively for MSTS with TSM and dabble a bit with 3dCanvas pro. I never used gmax and never planned on using it. I saw the gmax bible book at the store the other day and perused it for a few hours. I was very impressed and it now is sitting in front of me on my desk. The neat part is the CD that comes with the book, as mentioned above, contains the whole book– all pictures are color on the CD, and all the files and examples you need to do the tutorials in the book are include along with gmax and many of the game packs(Except Flightsim 2002) – which I know you can get all for free on the net. I have dial up and the CD saved me hours of downloading. Although the book does not focus on MSTS, I think it is one of the better books for a beginner to break into modeling. It has all that you need to get the basics down pat and ready for the tough stuff- just my opinion. The price of the book is not bad considering all you get –plus I had a coupon!Joe Hildenbrand
