RE: fire

Sure. Dump a can of paint thinner on your computer monitor, then light a match. I actually saw that happen once...I have NO idea what causes it on real locmotives....probably raw fuel being burned at the tip of the hot stack.

RE: fire

Looks like a blown turbocharger to me...This problem seems to be peculiar to GE units. I've seen at least three different units flaming at the stack, and many more spewing much heavier smoke than usual. I have yet to see an EMD flame like this.I even have video footage of an NS C39-8 (no. 8562, I believe) experiencing a similar situation.

IIRC, Fatalblowback is when the firebox doors on a steam locomotive are not closed when entering a tunnel, so the flame comes into the cab and uh.. yeah you got itFire – image 17

RE: fire

That looks like someone is going to lose their job. A fire extinguisher is good for a small fire, a 2½" line is what is needed there.

RE: fire

I saw a 44-tonner do it on a tourist train, about 30 years ago. It was fighting a steep grade on a curve, with a heavy train, when the accumulated carbon in the exhaust system strated to cook off. The flame stood up about three feet, and was licking the branches of the overhanging tree limbs ... which was a real worry, since the weather had been very dry for a while... -Phil

RE: fire

ive seen Onion Pacific (union Pacific) 3 month old SD70M's do this on testing there is a problem on the SD70's where the locomotive is in dynamics, then the engineer quickly puts the locomotive into Power. The turbocharger cannot keep up and shoots out massive fireballs and lots of black smoke! Who says modern day railroading is boring!! Cheers
