Hi All,The Schnabel car problems have been overcome and it will need a new paint scheme and some detail work, Then it will be ready to go ....
Here are some pics of it articulating correctly thru a tight Yard curve.....Thanks to Mark Toland and Bob Boudoin for the information contained in the WAG files of the articulated wellcars. The problem I have had with this unit is due to my eliminating the Bounding Boxes to try and eleviate the problems when units overlap, however MSTS doesn't like cars not to have BB's or apparently they won't move.Rick

RE: Schnabel Car Fixed !!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-03 AT 02:13 PM (EDT)

I think a westinghouse transformer to start...I have several pics of these type of units and am inclined to do the Westinghouse one first....The pictured unit and mine share very little shape in common but I will try to place the name plates correctly....if not then I may redo the clamping section to more reflect the prototype photo. Also, this unit is over 20ft tall and doesn't move under my bridges very well...it scrapes along about a foot too high....if anyone wants it lowered now is the time to suggest it....even though most of these did haul loads too high or wide for normal operations.Rick

RE: Schnabel Car Fixed !!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-03 AT 04:20 AM (EDT)

Hi Scott,The articulation of this car is determined by the pieces you divided it into....
My Schnabel is 5 seperate sections
FrontA---The leading plate section
FrontB---The Next higher plate section
Load-----The clamping areas and load itself
RearA----The High Trailing section
RearB----The trailing plate section
FrontA & RearB contain the couplers.....and each section except Load has 5 axles and 2 bogies....the Load section has 2 bogies but no wheels.I began designing the Schnabel as one unit and once done deleted the parts not needed for each section and saving the left overs as new pieces....one thing this helped me with is to be able to bring all pieces back into the modeling program so that I could see how they fit together and make adjustments as needed. The next hurdle is the coupling and I copied the coupling from the articulated well cars and that did the trick. The unit can take any curve and the load moves well off the track in curves...looks very good. Some slop of the leading and trailing wheels but not much. Here's a pic of the finished model....the paint scheme is very HO like but I like it. Also, the bright Westinghouse sign in this pic has been fixed.Rick

Here are the pics of the finished unit in Westinghouse livery....the WAG file needs some tweaking to get the weights right...and to make it work in TS you will need to have all five sections together...but it doesn't take up much in the way of frame rate. The paint scheme is Westinghouse mimicking WECX 203, but the units design is a GE version of a 20 axle Schnabel. The last two pics show the articulation and movement off the tracks of the load itself. Here's the pics.Rick

RE: Schnabel Car Fixed !!!!!

Hi again Controll, First of all, Your model is looking very good! I'll be looking for it when released. My model is an approximation of an ABB Schnabel, It's just a shade under 150ft as built, More or less built the same way as yours using 7 cars, however the span bolsters have no bogies as of yet because of the length of the bolsters make it kind of stiff, I'd rather have it rotate around the center than the ends, It is noticeable but not much. I'll take some screenies and post them shortly.
