Since Trainsim kind of maxes out on 2 sets of 3 axle BOGEY trucks, the span bolster, multi-truck schnable car is "difficult" to reproduce using a "SINGLE" wagon. You might have better luck producing it as many "wagons" that get assembled as a consist. The span bolster is not a problem I've solved yet...Here's some more info...

FYI: Not to rub it in... but an acquaintance of mine in Atlanta has produced a 12-axle schnabel car (single item) for TRAINZ.Schanbel Car help? – image 3

RE: Schanbel Car help?

Hi Pete,I thought that the multiple car sets was the way to get it done, but how is the vehicle split up and then how are center points aligned for the unit to swing properly in curves....Any help or leads are appreciated.Rick

RE: Schanbel Car help?

Hi,I've never tried a Schnabel, but have some experience with articulated TGV trains. You would probably end up with this 7-car consist:(1) one 2-bogie car (4 axles), done the regular MSTS way(2) one span bolster with no wheels to connect (1) and (3), with bogie pivots at the spot where (2) is supposed to connect to (1) and (3). You can use a single transparent poly as a bogie object in this case. No wheels need be defined.(3) one 2-bogie car (4 axles)(4) one load with no wheels to connect (2) and (6), set up with bogie pivots at the spot where (4) connects to (2) and (6)(5) one 2-bogie car (4 axles)(6) one span bolster with no wheels to connect (5) and (7), with bogie pivots at the spot where (6) connects to (5) and (7)(7) one 2-bogie car (4 axles)Set up all 7 cars with bar couplers and with CouplingUniqueType to prevent coupling to other types of couplers.
Set up cars 1 and 7 with a second coupler definition for the automatic coupler. Bounding boxes should be set suitably short such that they do not overlap. You may need to make the bounding boxes on (1) and (7) asymmetrical. The result will be a Schnabel car that articulates approximately correctly. The only problem will be that the load will not shift sideways in tight curves, because the imaginary bogie pivots always stay centered on the track. This will cause the articulation between (4) and (2), (4) and (6), (2) and (1), (2) and (3), (6) and (5), (6) and (7) to shift a bit laterally, where in reality there would be a fixed axis of rotation. As I said I haven't tried it but I'm reasonably sure it should work.Let us know how it goes!!cheers

RE: Schanbel Car help?

A problem with the Schnabel carIt all works together in the sim and shows that it is coupled with the locomotive...however when movement is engaged and the engine starts rolling the Schnabel car remains stationary but the wheels roll...and when the loco goes thru curves the bogies do not articulate on the Schnabel....this may be due to the car itself not moving from the straight track it begins on.....Any help with this is greatly appreciated.....the coupling is Automatic for all parts and shows coupled on the F9 key display. It's a weird one and I hope I can fix it.....The unit is made up of 5 seperate parts all coupled together to for the Schanbel and looks good for all joints....the Front 5 axles are one unit (2 bogies) the next five axles are the next unit (2 Bogies) the next unit is the load and clamping system with platforms and (2 Bogies with a wheel set each (invisible))...then the last two mirror the first two parts....It's ready to go if I can figure out the movement problem.RickHere's a pic of the engine moving away from the Schnabel but remaining coupled (as shown by the F9 menu).
