Here are some update photos of SEPTA’s Silverliner IV’s. The current model is the single car model- the married couple will be done once I finish the interior (0% complete). Keeping with NALW tradition, a release date has not been officially declared. Not trying to be a smart a$$, but every time I think there’s all green signals ahead, I get derailed, and have to put all projects on the back burnerJoe Hildenbrand

Arrow IIIs are different from Silverliner IVs. The model can easily be modified into an Arrow III though.

Nice! But I see one problem with it: the left headlight is a bit stretched-out compared to the other one.

RE: Silverliner IV Update Pictures

The headlight is out of whack. I did not notice this blemish until after exporting to MSTS. I went back and after many attempts - could not fix it using conventional methods i.e. re-mapping. The part is a real b$tch to map because of the curvature – the points are a bit uneven. So I added a square poly, mapped it, and problem solved. Also if you look real closely- the stairwells are jutting out a bit and the roof is coming apart on one end!. This project is only a few hours old and is still actually in the R&D stage – also the texture are just for mapping – I’m still experimenting w/1024’s. The fun begins in beta testing!

I don't need to search google, I only live two miles from the Main Line! LOL I also ride the Silverliners at least once a week. About the designation signs, I am contemplating adding them to the windows and sides. For now, I might only include signs for the NEC south of Philly - the R2. I got a trivia question I like to throw out there, Why isn’t there an R4 line? Joe Hildenbrand

SEPTA eventuly skipped the R4 designation sign. But there will be a R4 Fox Chase line(to skip R8). Desgination sign suggestions:
For the NEC Extension to North Philly,R7 Trenton and R8 Chestnut Hill West
For the Philadelphia-Wilmington Stretch,R2 Marcus Hook/Wilmington,R2 Warminster(to Philly),and R3 Mdeia/Elwyn.

Very very close Mike, Fox chase and dropping the R8 designation are key ingredients to the answer. But why drop R8? Why was R4 skipped when they designated the R system? And if Fox Chase was to be one of the terminus of the R4, what was the other? I’ll give you another hint: The “Swampoodle” connection.Bonus question: What were the original parings for the SEPTA regional rail (proposed in 1983),?

You can't forget their cousins the Arrow IIIs. I've got lots of pictures of them. Also searched Google.

Like the Silverliner IVs, R28/29/33/36/36WF/40/40M/42 and M-1/2/3/4/6/7s, these are two unit sets or "married pairs." This set is seen at MP17.Silverliner IV Update Pictures – image 23

There is a small open cut just west of Penn Station, which is a good place to railfan. There is lots of action including Arrow IIIs like the ones seen here.Silverliner IV Update Pictures – image 25
As you can see, the pantograph of an Arrow III is different from the pantograph of a Silverliner IV.

RE: Silverliner IV Update Pictures

Transparent windows will be the last thing done. I hate messing with alpha channels. My hierarchy for modeling is; Research, basic shape modeling, texture work, main model construction, texture mapping, fine tuning – texturing & shape tweaking, convert to MSTS, get UID error message, try to fix problem, export again, get UID again, lose more hair, take ½ bottle of Prozac, fix model, export, then examine model in MSTS, then fix errors. Most of the errors that need fixing are usually texture and animation tweaks with a little shape adjusting Once I get the basic model to work in MSTS, I then start on the interior shape and textures. When finished with the interior, and all works in MSTS, I do the alpha channels/transparencies. Once these are all complete, multiple numbers are done, then the train is sent to the awesome physicists at the mechanical engineering department, and it is fitted for lights by the best lighting engineer in the business. The realistic first class cab view is completed overseas. As for NJT, I’ll see, it would be nice to get them done in time for the NJT pack. The pantographs would be no problem- it is a cross between a Faively and box. For the center doors, that is the minor problem. I do not know what would be more practical. A cheap version with the center doors painted on, or a more complex model with the doors as true shapes. I’ll experiment. With the electronic message boards on the side by the doors, I was experimenting with an animated message board that continually changed messages like the true prototype. I got it to work on a basic model and looks sharp. the only problem is clarity. The message boards are to small for clear lettering For the doors opening, we’ll see when MSTS 2 comes out. As long as this pneumonia is hanging around, I’ll can get some more modeling accomplished <G>. Joe Hildenbrand

All the better! Then we don't have to see a car that says Gladstone Local or Long Branch Express on it when we are running on the NEC. Or the Princeton Dinky, which uses a single Arrow III.

Good Luck, I was working on the Pioneer III, Silverliner I. II, and III. I put all my project time recently into trying to get the IV completed in spirit of the NEC 4 release. Below is how far I got on the II model. It is about 80% completed and need to do the textures/ When I'm finished the IV, I'll try to complete the rest. Joe Hildenbrand

RE: Silverliner IV Update Pictures

No I WON”T DO THE “YELLOW BIRD”. It’s too ugly lol!! Seriously, once the IV’s are completed- including the new SEPTA red-blue band, I would like to do NJT. Then I would like to do the early silverliners in PRR, PC, Reading, and SEPTA, if time allows –the airport paint might be done for MSTS v3. Spring break is over today and it’s time to hit the books –Calculus awaits! Also, I got GTA Vice City today - all I can say is SWEET!!Here is an update pic of the Interior – again the textures are crude and I did a half a$$ job on the alpha channels just to check out the view. LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-03 AT 11:58 PM (EDT)

I am currently engineering a method so I can distribute multiple road numbers with far less multiple textures, The current model posted is the single model. I did this one first because it is more complex – it has maximum amount of features – so all I have to do is “Cut Away” the pantographs and the one end of the vestibule to have the married pair. I would like to have a few reps from all the number ranges. The IV models go way past the 300 and 400 numbers. There are still a few numbered in the 100’s and high 200’s. There were many in those number ranges but were switched to the 300 and 400’s when they were modified - the PCB transformers. The first IV’s were numbered 9018 – 9031. I have a number list of all the silverliners, but it is only current to 1997. I know #269 still ahs the PRR lettering on it! I still see it come by Exton once in awhile.I would like to make all the number ranges including the 9000’s. The pre 300 –400’s will be painted like the ones above plus some with the older logos, and the current numbers will be painted with the color stripes on the front and down the sides. As for release, I do not know yet, I can get sidetracked very easily with school and health problems, plus there are others in the team that need to supplement their work so this can be a first class model. For the unpowered, there arent any. in the married pairs, both are powered, but only one car has the pantograph. The other car gets it power from the pantograph car through a jumper wire on the roof.

>I am currently engineering a method so I can distribute
>multiple road numbers with far less multiple texturesA method I suggested in another thread was to have separate smaller textures for the number boards and number plates. This would allow multiple road numbers without having the main textures differing by only a road number repeated over and over again. My reason for suggesting this was to cut down on the size of downloads for 56K users, but in general it's a good idea since it will save Nels bandwidth, and allow the possibility of a huge amount of different numbers without creating unreasonably large downloads.BTW, great job on those Silverliners!

RE: Silverliner IV Update Pictures

Status report:Official status: Model including interior – 75% complete
Texture – 50% complete I actually started over from scratch. The good news is that the model I originally posted took about three days worth of work. I’m never happy with the first version of a model and always start from scratch for the release model. The MP54 recently released was my fourth version. If you look at the above model, you’ll notice many imperfections, most notably the stairs jutting out. What I can’t live with is the front. Compare my model to the prototype, the dimensions are way off. I made this model with no reference dimensions. Yesterday, I rode a consist that had two IV’s matched with two III’s. I did not know the IV’s are significantly wider by a 4 inches. The other day I spent hours photographing them and took lots of notes –which btw resulted to a trip to the police station! With the experience of the first model and tons of information and over 50 detail pictures, stand by, the wait will be worth it. The current model will have higher detail and a lower polygon count. Also, I found some pictures of the IV’s in Reading markings. Very interesting, I was only going to do the earlier models in Reading. So now look forward to seeing the IV’s in PC, SEPTA, Clown Rail, and Reading!
