NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update – image 1

Here are the first screen shots of the New South Wales Public Transport Commission 421 class diesel electrics built by Clyde Engineering. Most of the work on the number two end cab is finished, and I'm now working on the sides, and am up to the useless automatic staff exchanger (useless because half the time, the staff ended up in two pieces on the track ). I am yet to add the mirrors on the side, and the pilot is just blank.Anyway, enough from me....

I look forward to the odd PTC of NSW 421 and VR S working together.

Hot, hotter when they get a nose. I just finished working on the two hour buffer job!!! At least I don't have to do it again, and they look really nice. However the model already comes in at 3300 polys, 750 of which are in the wheels and bogies, I should be able to cut some of them out. I plan for the nose and no. 1 cab to add about 3000 - 3500 polys, and for the model to come in anywhere from 8000 - 10,000 polys. Is 8,000 - 10,000 polys a good amount for a loco with the EMD nose?
Anyway, in other news, my girl is back at school (much to her dislike), she had breathing problems from what she tells me. I also have a 1000 word report to do for commerce.Cheers.Projects

RE: NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update.

*Laughs* 10k poly? wow. I really have to work on my models. Thing is, I read somewhere that msts is smart enough to know which polys can't be seen, and doesn't render them. I've got two cars which are over 40k polys each and I've never had a slow down using them. I wonder if maybe deleting polys isn't wholly needed.

MSTS being smart? :S I might just add a few thousand more polys if that is the case...Projects

Unfortunately MSTS is not that smart. The polygons are there, as can be seen when you use camhack and the camera goes inside the train. NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update – image 9 NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update – image 10

RE: NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update.

A hint for polygon reduction: What shapes are you using for small pipes/handrails? In mine, I usually use triangular prisms (a tube with 3 sides in TSM) for the small rails (such as the window guards on the 620/720) and pentagons (tubes with 5 sides) with polygon smoothing for larger rails and tubes. If its only got a 3cm diameter, a triangle with smoothing will suffice. Just a suggestion. Your model is coming along very well, good to see. a 10K+ polygon count for a bulldog nose is pretty normal - I think the B's have something like 18000 dont they?NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update – image 11 NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update – image 12

I thought the B's had around 16,000 polys, which would be roughly 6000 - 7000 polys each nose. Only James will be able to tell us.I'm using five-sided cylinders with the ends missing for almost everything, I've found that when I tried the triangle method that they didn't look round enough, even with smoothing however this might be a slight downfall of G-Max.
The poly count is up around 3750 at the moment, however that inclues most of the handrails, sanding pipes, double sealed headlight, roof detail (the roof is in my view the best part of the loco at the moment) and an almost complete number two end.At the moment my focus has turned to the nose, which might mean a couple of late nights. I'll get there in the end.Cheers.Projects

Cool, so a poly count of around 10000 for the 421 which is a double ended loco would be about right.Any chance of telling me roughly how many polys the nose and cab add up to?Projects

Ummmmmmmmm.... WOW!!!
Anyway, I've asked way too much of you, I better get cracking on the model. I'm in the middle of giving it fuel and air tanks + tubing, currently weighing at 410 polys, I know it is a lot but it a work in progress and *shudders* it will only increase. Projects

RE: NSWPTC 421 class Diesel Electric update.

heh. I went back and checked and it seems that when I used the polycounter, it was counting the polys for all the LOD levels. The straight model (no lod levels) itself is only 14k polys. (Or there abouts)

Just thought I'd drop you a quick line saying that I've started the nose of the 421, with the headlight, handrails and buffers. From the right angle it looks quite nice. Tonight I hope to get a door on it, pilot, maybe part of the number one end cab and do some more work on the number two end.Projects
