How did you guys come up with your names? I thought up mine when I was bored on the bus going to school and I was sitting with my head cocked to the side staring into space like an idiot and I thought about how cool it would be to drive, no fly, a steam locomotive to school. So, I came up with Hovertrain.

RE: Forum Names

hehehe...a flying steam train, huh? That would be pretty cool. I've got that scene at the end of "Back To The Future 3" stuck in my mind now, with Doc Brown and his Steam Train Time Machine! Well, as far as where my forum name came from, I just used my e-mail screen name. I got the screen name "gatecityca" after I had done research earlier on the history of the area where I live. I live in San Bernardino, California. Anyway, San Bernardino was, and to some extent still is, a major railroad transportation hub for southern California. In fact, the city pretty much owes its existance to the Santa Fe RR, otherwise it probably would have just stayed a Mormon camp with citrus groves and a couple of sheep. San Bernardino developed into such an important way point to the rest of southern California that it earned the nickname "The Gateway City." I thought that was pretty cool, so I used it for my screen name. Gatecityca is "Gate City, California."Chris

XLSpecial was a named freight train the Milwaukee Road started in 1963 or so. 261 was it's number. Before the Super C (Santa Fe) it, along with it's eastbound counterpart the "Thunderhawk", was the fastest transcontinental freight train. Averaged over 60MPH over much of the route that was not in the mountains.Todd

In 1904, the Interborough Rapid Transit Company began operations of a nine mile route from City Hall to Harlem.
The stations were as follows:
1 is for the local train
3 is for the express train
City Hall: 1
Brooklyn Bridge: 1,3
Worth Street: 1
Canal Street: 1
Spring Street: 1
Bleeker Street: 1
Astor Place: 1
14th Street: 1,3
18th Street: 1
23rd Street: 1
28th Street: 1
33rd Street: 1
Grand Central: 1,3
Times Square: 1,3
50th Street: 1
59th Street Columbus Circle: 1
66th Street: 1
72nd Street: 1,3
79th Street: 1
86th Street: 1
91st Street: 1
96th Street: 1,3
Past 96th Street all trains made local stops:
103rd Street
110th Street Cathedral Parkway
116th Street/Columbia University
125th Street
137th Street City College
145th Street
Later that year the line was extended north:
157th Street
Not long afterwards the 3 train started using the Lenox line and just 14 years after the subway was opened, the current "H" system was put into place (Broadway/7th Avenue, Lexington/Park/4th Avenue, Shuttle). The tunnel to Brooklyn was opened within a few years of the first subway. The line ran with composite (steel/wood) cars until the first Hi-V all steel cars arrived. They were supplemented by the more well known (and more common) Lo-V cars, a few of which are still operable.
Today the IRT (Division-A) is comprised of 9 lines (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9,S) and runs in all four boroughs served by the subway. It dominates the Bronx (6 lines to the IND's 2) and is less dominant in Brooklyn and Queens (4 in Brooklyn and one in Queens). Their cars are shorter and thinner than the cars of the BMT/IND (Division B).

My nickname is Homer, and he's also my favorite cartoon character.I also race a 125cc shifter kart in WKA and SKUSA. I chose #13 because it was not only the number my father wore in HS and college basketball, but I wore it playing HS hockey. SKUSA requires letters in regional racing and "J" represents the Great Lakes region, so my number is 13j.If you are at any midwest kart races next year look for me:Forum Names – image 9Homer #13j

RE: Forum Names

Hi peoples,My name was derived from something totally unrelated to trains. Way back when I was a young fart, I was a geek, a real honest to goodness nerd. This was way before calculators and I want around with horn-rimmed glasses, my ever present pocket protector, and my slide rule hanging off my belt. And oh yes, I was skinny as a rail.I got teased a lot in high school - by both the jocks and the cool girls, and back then I didn't like it at all - but I was too socially inept to know how to go about changing my image. Now, I'm 60 years old, and frankly, don't give a rats a$$ what people think. I ended up with a damn good job, a terrific wife (who obviously saw something in me others didn't) and a great life. Great enough that now I can look back and actually joke about being a geek in school. I'm not really proud of it, but I accept it as part of what I am and, at times, even joke about it, like I was doing when I had to pick this name. It's actually my login name at work, too.Have a Happy Holidays, everybody,Larry

The name I use is the same name that I got when I was christend.
My entire name is Björn Jonatan Grönoset.
My mom didn't like Björn Grönoset (just listen to it, sounds crazy.) So they decided that it'll be Jonatan (it CAN also be spelled Jonathan.)
Now you know how I got my name.

>My mom didn't like Björn Grönoset (just listen to it, sounds crazy.) ... I like it! Anyway, I lived for years on my middle name, so I guess it's OK. (I had to grow up, move away from home and join the Army before I could get people to use my "proper" first name) My family STILL calls me "Nat" - they're the only ones, though.
Worse yet, I was named for both my Grandfathers, so I was: John Nathan. For some reason, people try to push them together and name me Jonathan - not that it is a bad name or anything, but it's JUST NOT MINE!
(added during edit)
Yes, I know what Björn translates to in English. I still don't think its a strange sounding name.

I had to think of the number fast so I use the year that I was born in instead. I wanted to use BNSF733 cuz I have seen it past through Berwyn a few times. Ah well, it's too late, now.

Yep, you guessed it. I'm a railroad dispatcher, but before you go off thinking of some guy sitting behind a desk with a thousand little lights, computers, and a complex network of lines representing a thousands of miles of railroad above him...... I only have 16 miles of mainline, 5 mainline sidings, and a small yard to worry about in northeastern Utah on the Heber Valley Railroad. It sounds super easy, and it is for the most part, but there are days when things get exciting. (Winter 2001: Snowmobilers wreck themselves in the frog of a switch near a major highway grade crossing. Tow truck gets stuck trying to pull them off the tracks, and needs second tow truck to help. Train held up for an hour. Passengers disgruntled to say the least.)I'm also a qualified brakeman, conductor, hostler, etc. but "dispatcher" is my highest ranking title. Some people confuse me for an EMT dispatcher, which wouldn't be fun for me at all.618 is one of our steam engines. - dispatcher618

RE: Forum Names

hehehe...ironically, that's what a lot of people around here call me! Especially my friends. You're lucky I didn't choose that screen name first . Actually, there's an interesting story about how that nickname got circulated. I've been a rail buff since I was a little kid in Illinois (I'm 25 years-old now). Well, anyway, about a year ago, on a sort of spur-of-the-moment decision, a group of friends and I decided to take the Metrolink commuter train into Los Angeles. I've been on it many times, but some of the others had never even been on a train before, so it would be a new experience for them. It was the last day of the semester, and it had been a rough semester for all of us at that (I go to San Bernardino Valley College), so we decided to take the train just to goof off and get away for a while. We went to Bakers before we went down to the station to get a quick lunch to take with us (Bakers is a fast-food joint in case you're not familiar with it, since it seems to be just a southern California place). It was off peak time, so there weren't a whole lot of people on our train, at least until around Rancho Cucamonga (it's the second stop after departing San Bernardino, en route to Los Angeles). We pretty much had a car to ourselves for a little while. Now, if you imagine a group of college students just starting their summer break on a fast train to the big City of Angels and you know something is going to happen. Well, of the many ways we got into some mischief is we got into a food fight on the train, had the proverbial french fry war! Of course, being a rail buff I made sure we picked up everything afterward, no reason to ruin a perfectly good train. But not before the conductor announced the next station on the PA and also said "...and I should also remind certain passengers about boisterous behavior" hehehe. A few people looked at us...everyone knew who he was talking about. Now, you'd think I would be embarrassed, and I probably was a little, but like I said it had been a rough semester so I apparently unwound with a little regression
Besides, I figured I'd never see those people on the train ever again anyway, and out of the many things in their busy lives surely they wouldn't remember the time a bunch of college kids got a little rowdy on the Metrolink?? Well, we did a little sightseeing in Los Angeles and rode the Red Line subway up to Hollywood and saw the Walk of Fame. Oh, by the way, for those of you who do live in southern California, this is actually a pretty neat trip because the Metrolink ticket will give you a free transfer to the Red Line for unlimited rides. All counted, the trip on the Metrolink train from San Bernardino and including the transfer to the subway, it only took us about an hour and 20 minutes to get to Hollywood. It was a pretty good trip. Anyway, when I came back to school the next semester, everyone started calling me "rail nut." It's one of the many nicknames I've been given over the years
But don't worry, Rail Nut, your forum name is perfectly safe! Besides, I just used my AOL screen name, as whereas there could be an untold number of other users with the screen name "Railnut" there is no one else with the name "Gatecityca" Chris T.

RE: Forum Names

Interesting story indeed! I was smitten by the rail bug when I received my first steel Lionel trainset when I was 7. Really got bit by the bug when I was 9, living near Binghamton,New York where you had two great railroads keep the rails ever shiny. Erie Lakanookie and the D&H. Great Stuff!! Moved to Brockton.Ma with a small rail yard in my backyard. Whoopee! Trains, trains and more trains.Upgraded to HO scale in 1967. To my dismay, I have boxes and boxes but no place to set the bugger up. Somehow, the good basement clause insn't in the marrage contract, dammit!
PennCentral and Conrail all but destroyed freight service on the South Shore here. Poor service and lousy MOW. CSX and Bay Colony shortline now handle what little freight traffic there is. The MBTA has revamped and renewed the rails for commuter service but I don't find that very exciting. Trainmaster and MSTS has totally rekindled my interest in railroading again. Railnut
