Superliner – image 2

Here is my first attempt at 3D modeling. I used very simple textures just to see how my model was progressing. Hope you like how my Superliner looks. Someday I might finish the whole fleet of Superliners. Superliner – image 3

You can see that the exisiting Superliners, while very good, are a bit too short.
Superliner – image 5I still have to add end skirting, windows, interior details, major truck work and a lot more special details. Plus I'll have to develop some textures for it. But so far so good. I didn't get the dreaded UID message so I think I'm on the right track so far.

I haven't considered those California/Surfliner cars but who knows? Since I live close to the Surfliner tracks, getting close detail shots wouldn't be a problem for me. And thier body's are very similar to Superliners. I don't understand the I and II, are their two series of these cars now? I remember seing them (California Cars) a few years back in Southern California on run through San Diegans, but I haven't seen them recently but they still do travel in the area. Surfliners are the main event now though. Very nice if you want to travel to San Diego or other beach cities. I planned to make Santa Fe Hi-Levels next, as I have some excelent plans for them. But don't anticipate these any time soon. Superliners are my first priority. And with school and finals and work... well as everybody knows, time is very short.

That's a great looking car, and you're right, MSTS Superliners are too short.

RE: Superliner

since your considering doing the santa fe Bi Level coaches you should make a Pacific Parlor Car so we can make the real Coast Starlight.

You Bet! I've definately given it a thought. Also I'd like to make the old stepup transition dorms used for many years before the Superliner II transition dorms arrived.

RE: Superliner

Looks great! Better than the default cars by a long shot, and at least your version will be textured in an intelligent way. The only thing I notice is that the roof curvature is a little bit too arched - it's about the right curve for a Budd-type passenger car, but Superliner roofs are a little bit "flatter" - not so much in the straight and level sense, but the arched portion is just not domed as high.Let me know if you want some help creating the textures later on. As you know, I'm responsible for the gifs in your signature. Alex StroshaneSuperliner – image 17

Thanks for the info on the roof before I get to far into the model I only have side plans to base my model off of so the roof has proven to be quite difficult. I have probably gone through 5 roofs so far and none seem to look right, but I'm still trying. I have used a plan for the Budd Hi-Levels to help and this would explain the "Budd look". I have many pictures of the real things but all are a bit angled so I can't get a perfect profile.I'd love for someone to help with textures. I don't really have a capable program to make targa files and I've never made any textures yet. I can easily get the texture templates but texturing looks quite imtimidating. Textures will be quite dificult for my models. In addition to the obvious exteriors, I'm building interiors for each car. So I'll have to texture the insides so you can see it through the windows. I'd also eventually like to make an interior view (camera 5) for the lounge or sleeper.Any help would greatly be appreciated. I can email you the car, templates, or whatever you'd need for texturing. And thanks for your interest in Amtrak...

RE: Superliner

The whole roof is not congurted. Only the curve until it straightens out on top. What might help is buying a HO model Superliner. It has most of the detail and may be of some help.

RE: Superliner

The whole roof is not congurted.Congurted? Do you maybe mean corrugated? What might help is buying a HO model Superliner.Or, I could just scan the scale drawings that I have . Model Railroader ran plans of the Superliner Is in November 1982 (I think), and I have the issue. They also had did color drawings of the California Cars in 1997 sometime. Either of those would have an end and cross-section shot, and since I've already promised to scan some other plans for someone else, I can do the Superliners as well. With regards to making the textures - I could work from a template, but the textures that I have made from scratch so far have been made with no template. I didn't want to have to squish things disproportionately, since it's easier to draw them normally, so I've been painting in the main body textures and then cramming detail wherever else it'll go. Thank God for Gmax's "pixel snap" mapping feature! Making the interior textures wouldn't be too hard - I'd probably just create a second ACE image, maybe 256x256 or whatever.Alex StroshaneSuperliner – image 20
