As some of you may know I've been working on an SW8 for quite some time. A few months back I was quite keen to finish it and the progress on it was rolling along quite well. I've since become involved in other activities that are consuming most of my time to spend completing the switcher. It's still my desire to see it finished and make it available to others but I don't see how I'm going to accomplish that.I'm offering to make the source files available to someone with the amibition and dedication to complete this project. The only conditions are that you must have TSM, you must be serious about taking it on and finishing it and I would like to have a copy of you're final product. Please contact me by email.Stew

RE: SW8 Source Files Available

I suppose it could be considered complete as far the body goes. The trucks might need some touch up or even rebuilding. I've gotten to the point that I had added cab details and was intending on putting some kind of detailing on them such as gauges and so forth. Presently the cab details have no textures except for the default blank.ace. Externally it's fully texture mapped, however I don't think I've done a very good job with it to make it repaintable for others. I've just been too busy to sit down and remap the textures.I've applied blank textures to the carbody in order to make reapinting a little easier. The ENG file was started and it has lighting in it plus a passenger view from the cab as seen above. Still needs more tweaking though.Sounds and Cab are aliased to the default GP38.It has a bounding box issue as well that has been a real pain to try and sort out. It's especially noticeable in multi SW8 lashups.

RE: SW8 Source Files Available

I have been tinkering with the model, but now when it would be ready, I have S/DS problem which I can't solve. I wanted to join most of the parts but the model causes S/DS when trying in the game or in editor.
Hierarcy is OK, and there can't be too many polys in just the handrails, but if I join all handrails to a single part, the model crashes in the game. Handrails are mapped to same texture(but the mapping has not caused problems before).
Total poly count is 4634, and that's why I wanted to make the lower detail levels. Joining parts will make that easier. It has now 37 parts. Is there any limits which I don't know?

RE: SW8 Source Files Available

enocell:My beta of the SW8 loads into MSTS fine, does not crash at all. What body changes have you made?I noticed you've added walkway rails, and an interior brakewheel and texturing. Are those the only changes to the beta you received? Like you, I want this SW8 to come to fruitition. It's really a fine model. Hopefully the quirks will get sorted.Andre

RE: SW8 Source Files Available

I found the reason, it was the bell(!). It works when I added it to the later versions, which now have 3 distance levels.
The EL version is very 99% complete(in fact there's two of them).

RE: ENg file?

Looking great Teemu. Thanks for taking this under your wing and bringing it to pass.Re: .eng files.None available that I know of. Perhaps a tweak of the engine performance codes for the RS1 (1000 HP unit) will give us ballpark figures to work with.Better yet, maybe Bob Boudoin will step in and give us an assist. On another note: I've been unsuccesful at aliasing my desired sound files for the virtual cab view. Not using the "sw8cab.sms" and instead aliasing to a custom sound file has resulted in complete lack of sound, or only partial sounds for the virtual cab view. Have you had success at placing your desired sound files in all three sound applications the .eng file calls for?Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: ENg file?

I've also been trying to get regular cab sounds in the #5 view.No matter what I try,I only get caboose sounds. At least that's what it sounds like. This goes for any loco with a #5 view.Anyone have any luck?

RE: ENg file?

The cab .SMS file has a listing of included views and excluded views near the top. Take PassengerView off the exclusion list and re-enter it on the inclusion list. Bingo - cab sounds in #5 view.

Overkill:Are you talking about the sw8.sms file, or the default gp38.sms file?Mind cut/pasting the exact lines we're looking for?Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: ENg file?

Each locomotive has 2 .SMS files. *cab.sms contains the cabview sounds, which are usually stereo; while *eng.sms contains the exterior sounds, which MUST be mono.
Under each ScalabilityGroup definition in these files are two lines similar to this:
Activation ( CabCam () Distance (100) )
Deactivation ( ExternalCam () PassengerCam () Distance (100) )
(These are from my generic GP/SD cabview sms file)
So, to get the cabview sounds in the #5 view, you would cut "PassengerCam ()" from the Deactivation line, and paste it in the Activation line. Make sure to do this on all 4 ScalabilityGroups.
If you need a visual:
Activation ( CabCam () PassengerCam () Distance (100) )
Deactivation ( ExternalCam () Distance (100) )Sorry if my first explanation was vague, I wasn't looking at the files at the time. I've tweaked so many of my own engines and rolling stock that my mind sees affect rather than name.
