RE: nuclear mistle, bomb , exc

It wouldnt take anything big to carry nuclear bombs on the rails, much less glamourous. Most components are shipped within DOD railcars that look pretty much ordinary , very few markings etc.
A few specialized railcars have been built through the years to carry odd sized loads required by the military allbeit either special enclosed cars or varients of flatcars.
Such shipments of some components were accompanied by either US Marshalls and or DOD personel for security. No bombs in their complete build were shipped, only individual components to be assembled where they were assigned for service, and often transport was accomplished as appearing just like an ordinary material movement. There are however some interesting movement on railcars, one of which appears on the northeast rails web site in thier flat car photos page, a DOD flatcar carrying a nuclear reactor load thats quite interesting and the photo can also be found on George Elwoods site. Take care,
John

Naw, nothing really to elaborate regarding the nuke issue. I know, I use to guard 'em. BUT, how about a WW2 or WWI or post-WW2 railroad gun. A good one would be the 210mm atomic railgun or the infamous Dora rail-gun of the German artillary command, or a 16 inch US Costal Command???
Ummm, sounds interesting. I've got specs, if anyones interested -

Instead of a fictional flat car, about one or two M1 Abrams tanks on a flat car? That'd be pretty cool. I've seen BNSF haul them before to and from Fort Hood, nearby Waco, Texas.------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!Nuclear mistle, bomb , exc – image 6

RE: nuclear mistle, bomb , exc

You know we could have 4 flat car, painted in Army Camoflauge color and 2 can be carrying WW2 US Army tanks and 1 of them would be carrying Little boy and Fat Man. That would be very intresting to see.

Those M1A2s/Bradley's etc are en route to or from NTC (National Training Center) in California. My best friend is a Cavalry Scout at Hood and actually just won "Hero of NTC" at their last rotation. If you'll notice, recently 99.99% of all Humvees/Tanks/APC's at Hood have been painted into desert camo. Wonder where they're planning on going...

>it would be neat if we could ger the bomb to go off if we crash! They don't go off unless intentionally detonated, even if dropped or burned. They are never transported complete with all components installed. The worst thing that can happen in an accident would be the conventional explosives from the trigger devices that may spread nuclear material over a short area, but no nuclear explosion by design.

RE: nuclear mistle, bomb , exc

This reminds me of a film I just watched today called "Atomic Train". For those who haven't seen it, a freight train loses its air brakes in an explosion, and is left rolling out-of-control down the slope into Denver. Aside from the cargo of biochemicals, there has also been a russian nuclear warhead placed aboard one of the boxcars by a chemical company without anyone knowing about itPretty good seeing them trying to stop the train, and Denver is blown up in a nuclear explosion near the end.The Freight CowboyP.S - I asked this before, but could anyone build the Peacekeeper missile car? It is an excellent modelling prospect, in my opinion.http://fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/icbm/lgm-118.htmThe pictures of the car are near the bottom.

RE: nuclear mistle, bomb , exc

In 1945 a device called "Jumbo" weighing more than 250 t was moved from the steelworks in Ohio (I think) to the nuclear test site at Alamagordo. It was initially built to contain the Trinity nuclear test, so the scientist would be able to recover the plutonium in case of a "fizzle". But in the end gen. Groves, head of the Manhattan Project, decided that the calculations were sound and that "Jumbo" wasn't needed. Insted it was placed almost at Ground Zero to measure the impact of Trinity on the steel canister. When the test was done, "Jumbo" had survived with only a few scratches, and today I believe that is on display at Trinity."Jumbo" was the heaviest cargo ever moved by train, and most of the tracks it used on its journey had to be repaired later. It would be nice if someone could build it. Unfortunately, I'm not able to do 3D or anything else myself - I'm just a Danish historian who recently covered the story of "Jumbo" in a book on "Decisive Moments in World History".Regards,
Rasmus Dahlberg
