this will sound dumb but what is a shay locomotive I know a rigid runs on one *frame* all the wheels attatched like the t-1 and an articulated bascially has to sets of drive wheels rotating together. but what is a shay I always thought it involved something with the front trucks or something but after seeing pics of one see the front trucks don't look different. srry if this is off the topic. but it's in loco design and this was the best fourm I could find to post it in Thanks in advance!

RE: what exactly is a shay locomotive

A shay was a geared locomotive designed to haul heavy loads but not got very fast in the process. The shay as 3 or 2 cylinders mounted vertical on the engineers side of the loco. The boiler is moved to the firemans side more to counter balance the the 3 cylinders. There are no siderods on a shay. The shay uses a drive rod which goes done the engineers side of the loco from truck to truck. So basically it is a ALL wheel drive loco. Here are a few pics to show you what i mean. What exactly is a shay locomotive – image 2What exactly is a shay locomotive – image 3What exactly is a shay locomotive – image 4What exactly is a shay locomotive – image 5New LOGO in progress!

RE: what exactly is a shay locomotive

The Shay is an amazing engine, it was mostly used in logging hauling, and if there was a damage rail, the Shay would have the power to go over that line, You know if you live in North Carolina, and near the Salisbury area, you can go up to Spencer and pay a visit to Spencer Shop, a railroad shop that used to belong to the Southern Railway Company before it was merged with Norfolk and Western to form Norfolk and Southern. Anyways Spencer Shop has a working Shay.

RE: what exactly is a shay locomotive

Well I haven't rode in any of the steamers cabs yet. I have been in the cabs. True Story. When I was 8 my older cousins helped me break my arm. Lots of fun. So the cheer me up my mom took me to Spenecer Shops as it was called then. The engineer of the N&W tuscan red diesel saw that my arm was broke and invited up in the cab for a free cab ride. Everything was going good til he asked me if I knew how to blow the horn for a road crossing. I told him two long short then another long til the road. Then he said you have the honor of blowing the horn for the three road crossings the tracks go across. I was very happy after that. New LOGO in progress!

RE: what exactly is a shay locomotive

Thats a good story, I remeber being in the cab of the Southern Railway F7 diesel, now this was when I was little about 3-5, and I just had fun blowing the horn, of course I don't think that any Engineer from the Brand new N&S (At the time), was very apprecitive, because you gotta use to horn to let other trains know what you are doing, you know backing up and going foward, or switching over to another line etc. ah good memeories

RE: what exactly is a shay locomotive

I worked on a shay in 1967-71 at Camp 6 Forest Museum in Tacoma. Here's the crew photo in 68.What exactly is a shay locomotive – image 8From left to right, Tim Johnson, Me, Jack Anderson (now runs Mt Rainier Scenic RR, Vance, Norm Elsner (ran the Shay at Klikitat since 1937), Mac, and Roy Cutler. A few years later, Jack and I retubed her, and were engineer and fireman for the season. Fun engines!Norm used to see if he could get her going so fast in the length of the engine that Jack or I couldn't get on! Imagine an insurance man hearing of this! The shay could be doing about 10-12 MPH in her length, but top speed was about 15.
