I've been trying all day to make just a simple SP style rear light setup. Here's a picture for ya. My problem is rounding off the rear piece on the top. I've tried everything under the sun it seems like. But I am fairly new to model building, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Fozzy, could you e-mail me when you get a chance? Thanx

I don't know how detailed you need it, but you could extrude each side of the round part, then extrude both edges of that to form the "fins" or "lips" on the outside edge of the half-round bracket.

>1 That'd work but it is the hard way to do it Mike.. It'd be easier to just use an extrude object and you could control the number of polys using the detail level.Best Regards,

>How would you suggest? Extrude tool? Sorry Yeah! I just edited the last mesage to say that as you were typing this one. The advantage there, is that you could make the whole lamp body back section in the extrude object tool and then fit that to the locomotive after removing any hidden faces rather than just the curved bit at the top and end up having to weld that to the lower back section. This actually shows up one of the good things about Canvas.... There are lots of ways to achieve the same result.Best Regards,

I've only used the lathe tool to create a coal burning stove for my caboose and marker lights for my caboose. I think I get the same level of control over poly's by selecting the correct amount of "sides" for my cylinders. Plus, there is better size control available, if you think it out in advance. The one plus of the lathe tool is "random points" clean-up is unnecessary, as there aren't usually any produced by the lathe.

Yeah! that's a valid point Mike, but I don't think I'd try and lathe this one... Given that it has a curve and then extends as a flat surface down the rear of the loco my preference would still be to draw the side profile in the extrude object tool, extrude it to width, then use chamfer tool on the bottom corners to make the rounded botom of that flat plane at the rear.. then do some manual clean up if it was needed. Manual clean up isn't such a big deal in a small component, but I'd probably use your method on a more complex one.Best Regards,

Thanks for the help, Mike and Julian. Just one question, what were the XYZ values for those objects? I find it easier to re-size objects this way than deforming. Thanx again

Pass!! That's like asking "How Long Is Piece Of String" Answer: "Twice As Long As Half A Piece Of String" It dosent really matter becuse you can scale it to the size you need afterwards. If you're using the method I outlined then you don't need to know the XYZ sizes because you'll be drawing an outline in the Object Extrude tool. Based on a side view drawing of the finished component. Best Regards,
