I was wondering if anybody was working on modeling a C420? I am quite a way into modeling the Arkansas & Missouri line which extensively uses C420's and was hoping to find at least a model I could reskin if necessary by the time the route is finished.

RE: ALCO C420

Hey Guys! I started a C420 with Bob's help and even put some custom sounds together, but then it looked like someone else was doing one, so I quit to work on other things (U23B, which should be released soon, U18B and MP15DC models). If I get those done and no one else has done the C420, I will pick back up work on mine!Highball!John D. Peterson

RE: ALCO C420

Hi John, please do me a huge favor try to make the mapping pretty friendly for striping on the nose and cab area if possible and I'll present ya with three MKT skins for that U23B. 1 for each unit they had #350, #351. and #352. Glad to see them being done finally. Keep up the great work. ALCO C420 – image 2 1972ALCO C420 – image 3

RE: ALCO C420

Thanks, Chris, ol' buddy! I have been away from the 'scene' for some time, but that Alco is one I started a number of months back. As far as modeling, it was done in TSM. I have dabbled with 3DC but I am still quicker/more efficient with TSM. I bought 3DC Pro with the intentions of learning to use it, but just haven't had the time!Great to hear from you, Chris! Hope all is well on your end!Highball!John D. Peterson

RE: ALCO C420

Hehehehe! Okay, you busted me, Chris...I do have a couple more models in progress, but not many.I have done some work on the MP15DC model including adding handrails and a few other detail parts:
ALCO C420 – image 5Had this U18B about done after finishing the U23B, but wasn't happy with the texture mapping, so I stripped all the textures off and started over and this is how far I got:
ALCO C420 – image 6I have a U23B in seven liveries plus undecorated about ready to release as soon as Kelley "ace" Elllison gets done doing his lighting magic on the last couple! This was a easy unit to "get my wet" on after being away for so long since the U36B made a good starting point.I will drop you an "E" one day this week, Chris!Highball!John D. Peterson

>> And would like to skin that U23B to Lehigh Valley.....I have skinned that loco, but I had to use John Fowlis' U25B as a base, since I made it almost a year ago. I will upgrade it ASAP(I mean when the correct shape is ready).

RE: ALCO C420

Hmmmm I dont really know how you would go about doing things different, the problem is mainly how the textures lay on the nose but I think I know how to get around it I think I can change the position of the stripes on the front of the nose meaning it won't look exactly like the real units but will be close enough, again thanks for doing this unit, been waiting for it for some time ALCO C420 – image 8 1972ALCO C420 – image 9

RE: ALCO C420

"I am quite a way into modeling the Arkansas & Missouri line which extensively uses C420's and was hoping to find at least a model I could reskin if necessary by the time the route is finished." Oh me. I've railfanned the south end of that line (Ft. Smith to Fayetteville/Springdale) since about '70 or so!! Was heavily into it during the mid 70's as the Frisco was getting rid of their Geeps. Lost touch a bit during the BN years... but then began to fan it once more with the A&M took over. I've even modeled it on two separate model railroad layouts! (As the Frisco.) I live about 45 minutes from Ft. Smith, so often see the A&M when in town. Mind if I ask you about some more info on your A&M route you're doing? If that would be okay, drop me a line at my special coded email address:laming at clnk dot comI have all sorts of jpeg scans of that route showing trackage, structures, etc, etc, if you need them. RE: ALCO C420

And I forgot to say that I also have lots of Frisco info for that route, including trackage charts, gradient profiles, bridge stats, etc, etc. In fact, if you will consider "backdating" the line a bit (only a problem if you're a purist and ONLY want to run it as operated by the A&M), you will gain a TREMENDOUS amount of fun factor potential. Town locations that are nothing more than straight-rail on the A&M had pass sidings, industries, "interest". As operated by the Frisco, in addition to the daily through freights, this line had:Multiple switch jobs in Ft. Smith.Assigned switchers at Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers/Bentonville, Monett."Turns" from Ft. Smith to Winslow/or Fayetteville and also one from Monett to Fayetteville. Used an interesting mix of diesel power, most of which is available already (except the need for reskinning) at the D/L library. In steam days (up to 1952-54), there were helpers stationed at Chester, AR, and assisted trains up The Mountain to Winslow and returned. During the War 2 years, the traffic levels were very intense. Almost all the typical steamers for that line are already available in the D/L library. (i.e. USRA stuff.)This line has very good potential and I offer any input to you that I can.Andre Ming
