As many of you know, I'm working on recreating the Sumpter Valley Railway. Jon Davis surprised me yesterday with this toy to run on the narrow gauge!3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251 – image 1I'm sure it will be some weeks before it is available, this is a very early version. Interestingly, he has abandoned the single engine mallet concept here. It loads as 3 parts + tender, interesting in the consist editor! Note the Donkey engine in the background too, another little goody he's working on.This is on my test RR (standard gauge), not the coming SVR, which is still in a primitve state with only a couple miles of 3' track laid!

RE: 3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251 and caboose

Here's the other gem that goes with it, coming from Tim Muir. He's also working on SVR lumber flats with loads.3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251 – image 6The SVR route is presently at a standstill! I'm waiting for maps showing the accurate track layout of Baker City in late 30's, and won't have them until around the 4th of next month. With no dynamic track to link things in 3' gauge, I can't just start laying track up the Powder river, then hook it into the Baker yard later! Since the dual gauge track is important to the look of the route, I want to start it right.

Sweet! What else can I say?As for the route, take all the time you need...and meanwhile blame M$ for not permitting dynamic tracks to have a gauge other than standard...Dominik MannProud Member of the MSTS European Railfans

Hey Steve,
Those walls inside that caboose are looking pretty bleak. Need some decoration there, I think! Tim

Can but join the others, looking superb!
Steve, if there is any additions to the narrow gauge track sections that you think necessary please let me know and I will consider it.

RE: 3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251

Thanks for the offer Okrasa!I'm still getting familiar with what I have to work with. As a guess, the thing that's missing is smaller degree curves. I think the least amount of turn now available is 5d, a 2 1/2 and maybe 1 1/4 would likely allow some things to align that won't at this point. One problem I already ran into. I started at a point I thought made sense, but shortly I had about 1 mile that should closely parallel the main line of the UP. Never could get parallel, ended up with slight zigs and zags instead! Now I'm going to tear it all up, and start on the straight instead. Live and learn.I suppose, in a worst case spot, one could use a short chuck of standard gauge dynamic track and live with the out of whack look! As far as I can tell, the trains don't care if you mix and match.

RE: 3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251

I think it would be much easier to start with the narrow gauge and then add the standard gauge. You can then use the dynamic in the standard gauge to make fine tuning.
Also if you have some location that needs the tracks to be spot on you'd better start putting down the tracks there.5d is indeed the smallest turn as the narrow gauge is nothing but re-scaled standard gauge tracks. I could though make some special pieces for narrow gauge only. Not any different than doing standard gauge tracks.
I will be adding some dual line curves in an update that's due in a couple of weeks.

RE: 3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251

Okrasa,I can never tire of telling you thank you for your Xtracks, easily the best addon for MSTS. I'll throw a request at you, then you can do what you will with it. I'm wondering if it's possible to make narrow-gauge tram trackage, just like the standard gauge stuff you've done. I'm going to be building some n.g. traction lines in my Portland Traction route, and need those sweet 30degree points and curves to make it feasible. If not, I can appreciate that you've got a pretty full plate. I'll just have to "fudge' it.Thanks again for your hard work, it's very much appreciated.Tim

RE: 3' gauge logging mallet SVR #251

Well looks like there won't be a version 3.2.
This many additions I'd better call it 4.0 instead.Charlie; I though we agreed back in June that I would add some dual line narrow gauge turns? Radiuses 150, 300 & 600, degrees 5, 10 & 20.Tim; narrow gauge tram switches, I'll put it on the list along with Steves small degree curves.Steve; actually I was wrong abot the curves, the smallest degree curve available is the modular endpoint. It's little over 3 degrees.I'm also considering a dual gauge track sections to help align three rail tracks and some very short straights that could be handy.

As an early contributor to the SVRR, it was my signal honor to recieve an example of Jon's and Steve's work. I must tell you it's worth the wait! (And it's making it awlfully hard to concentrate on my Portland Traction route ).I hope they don't mind my showing it off on the afore-mentioned pike, I just wish you could hear the sounds! Great work from you, gentlemen! Thank you very much!TimPS, those flats will get going ASAP!tm

Hi Adam,Jon seems to really like his privacy, so I'd better not. He looks in on the forums, but rarely posts, so he may respond. Sometimes it is weeks before I hear from him again, usually with something that just blows me away like this engine. I certainly don't want to interupt his kind of talent!Steve
