just tried to couple the wv&o 0-8-0 with their frontend to four empty logging cars (skeleton log cars). I had to approach at 17 (!) mph in order to achieve successful coupling. Then the train didn't move at all.
what did i do wrong, how do i solve that problem???

RE: front couplers

Have you installed the Game Patch available from Microsoft? It fixes a bug in the program. Without it, the front couplers will not release the train brakes after coupling to a train.

RE: front couplers

Bob,
Just checked the engine in question and the fix works OK. Coupled up at 2mph to four empty US2loggers and then continued to push with about 25% reverser and the same with throttle.
Mervyn.PS I haven't found any engine yet that the update doesn't fix, mind you I don't have all of them.

RE: front couplers

Bob,
You raise an interesting point. I recalled that there were indeed some locomotives not addressed by the patch, so I went back to the official MSTS site to check. According to the information posted there, the patch fixed the front coupler on steam and diesel locomotives. No mention of Electric locomotives, so I'm wondering if maybe those are the ones not fixed.
For anyone else reading this, the Microsoft patch may be obtained at:http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim/tech.aspDan

RE: front couplers

Check out the bounding boxes on those log cars. If they are the same ones I am thinking of one of either the loaded one or the empty one had a problem. Compare the loaded one to the empty one and copy the correct values.

G'day sstyrnol,By sounds of it you will need the Microsoft Train Simulator Update February 2002 up-grade patch, if you have not installed it as yet. There had been a lot said about using the patch, as it overwrites a few files. If you have done changes to the GP38 and Dash9, back em up as it changes these two .eng files. The patch is 7204 KB and you can see the files with WinZip so you can see what files go where and overwrite what. You cannot uninstall the patch. I took copy of all the files as a back-up before installing it just in case. Apart from the two .eng files it went fine. BUT others on the Forum complained of all sorts of things when the MSTS patch first came out. Heard bugger all of late. Just thought I would mention all this, as to be for-warned, is for-armed.Personally, being a retired "hands on" railwayman most of my life, that front coupling is still a bit of a pain, is still not as good as the rear coupler, and yes the rear coupling at times certainly does leave a lot to be desired if your really into shunting (switching). I just hope IF and WHEN we see V2 that will be heaps better. There is still quite a bit needed before I would call the couplings "as real as it gets".The only way I eventually found that helps with front couplings is:-
To make uncoupling a little easier, keep the engine brakes slightly on, don't fully release them. Uncouple front coupler wherever, (the more wagons back from front of your engine the messier it gets) and very... very.... slowly reverse away (1mph or less if possible) It is still a bug, but better than before the patch. Some diesels seem to be a little better than others, but that may be just me because of different power. The front coupler is very touchy.
Oh yes, some steamers it's a no go.Hope of some help.Front couplers – image 2

RE: front couplers

Hi John,
I think the problem also depends on how well the coupling distance/BB thing has been setup on any particular wagon or loco. It usually takes a heck of a lot of tweaking, even with BB-Editor, to get it right. The usual rule is, if ya don't get right in the first ten minutes, then it will take ten hours. Okay, I exaggerate, I mean FIVE hours. It's high on my list of: Things I hate doing with MSTS.
