Fozzy The Bears Loco Bashing Works, Presents... Stourbridge Lion for MSTS... Screenshot of the work in progress. Quite a way to go on this one but I thought you might like to take a look at the progress.Stourbridge Lion was the first steam locomotive to turn wheels on the track for a commercial railroad in the USA. Built by Foster Rastrick in Stourbridge England it was shipped to the USA in pieces and re-assembled in New York before being transported by boat up river, to Honesdale where it was first used by The Delaware & Hudson Canal & Railroad Company.Best Regards,

*chuckles*Well, if nothing else, these locos at least show us how far technology has come since the endeavours of Trevithick and Stephenson ...!Guess it'd be interesting if we put them on a modern-day TGV...considering there was once a time when scientists claimed in all honesty that trains could never go faster than thirty-some kilometres per hour, because else all air would be forced out of the carriages, meaning that the passengers would quite simply suffocate...Dominik MannProud Member of the MSTS European Railfans

On the contrary! I'd have made it a poll, but... Maintaining accurate history and a sense of humor (mixed with doses of oscillation!) contributes to our wellness, imo.And yes Kevin, B&O's FIRST 0-4+4-0!

RE: Americas First Railroad Steam Locomotive

I think you need to do a little more digging into the history books. The first loco was the America, owned by the same company, and also from England. But it disappeared in a boiler explosion early on, and then the Lion was used. But it was too heavy for the track, and was quickly retired.

Sorry Mr CMO... Afraid you've got it in the wrong order, I happen to know my history thanks!.... The America and the Stourbidge Lion arrived in the US on the same ship. The Lion was the first steam locomotive to run on rails in the USA The America was indeed purchased by the same company, but did not run on the track for eight months after the Lion. When the track had been rebuilt after the initial runs of the Lion. I can give you a few more details if you want but I'm not really keen to get into a debate over it.Best Regards,

RE: Americas First Railroad Steam Locomotive

Did you remember to make it too heavy for the rails? The wheels have to be removable so it can be used as a donkey engine for the roundhouse. Not quite a fitting ending for such a historic machine. Fortunately, being set aside and forgotten did preserve it from the scrapping torch. I am correct in remembering that they were able to restore it?Frank Musick

>Fortunately, being set aside and

>correct in remembering that they were able to restore it? Partially restored by the Smithsonian in the early 20th Century... It's still on display, but they didn't have all of the parts so it's very incomplete... There is some debate as to the origin of the boiler they used for the restoration as it seems to have discrepancies compared to the Foster Rastrick drawings. I'm also dubious about the wheels they built for the restoration although I've based the model ones on those wheels. There is a full size Replica though, in the museum at Honesdale which is now probably more accurate than the real one. As far as the original is concerned its sister engine the "Agenoria", which is very similar in design, was saved complete and is on display in the National Rialway Museum, York, England.

>How about Puffing Billy, Locomotion or Pen-y-Darran (the
>very first locomotive ever built)? LOL There's a good possibility these both may get slotted into the build schedule because to be honest they're not anywhere near as difficult to build as something like the K-36. So they make a good diversion from model work on complex projects. However Just as a quick note, and don't anybody try and jump on the following statement unless you want me launching loads of bits of paper and a 12000 word Treatise at you, I don't care what your supposed history books say, or what your Encarta encyclopaedia says... Pen-y-Darren was NOT the first steam railway locomotive. The first one was actually built by Richard Trevithick in Hayle, Cornwall, at Harvey's Foundry. It was built from the remains of the first Road Locomotive after that was damaged in a fire at Cambourne. They tested the road locomotive up Cambourne Hill.... when they got to the top they went into the pub to celebrate and left the locomotive in the pub stable. Unfortunately they forgot to put the fire out first, and it set fire to the stable block and killed two horses in the process. along with burning out the wooden chassis of the locomotive... The pieces were moved back to the foundry and rebuilt as the first Steam Railway Locomotive, this being where the first steam railway was actually laid... running from the Casting Shed out onto Hayle Harbour, using forged iron rails mounted onto stone blocks with what seem to be a comparatively modern rail chair system. That same locomotive is the one that was later used in London on a circular track and Called "Catch-Me-Who-Can" also known as "The Experiment"Best Regards,

RE: Americas First Railroad Steam Locomotive

Hey Foz, I'm not sure, but if the rebuilding took more than sixteen months, it may have been outstripped by Best Friend of Charleston. (I've seen the original wreck site for BFC)The only reason I said anything is, I love the Best Friend, and want to see it in the sim. There's something funny here though.Stourbridge Lion was the first locomotive...but the Best Friend of Charleston's railroad was the first railroad. Outdating the Baltimore and Ohio by a few months if you go back into the planning days.Best Friend was as the website puts it: the first steam locomotive in the US to establish regularly scheduled passenger service. It ran along six miles of wood and metal rails terminating near the junction of State and Dorchester Roads.
The cool thing is, Allen (yeah, the same guy in your post) chartered this railroad too. I think we could do with the Best friend being in the game if nothing else it'd be fun.

I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive! I saw that locomotive!, Okay, it's not really a locomotive, It looks like a BBQ Grill in the B&O Railroad Museum now. For over 100 years old now, It's suprisingly free of rust, I've seen 20 year old Jeep CJ-7's with more rust on them, not In Arizona of cource.

>Are you going to upload your locos to the file library? Absolutely will!!They'll be available from the file library and from a website that is currently under construction. The K-36 is nearing completion on the final details by the rest of the team, and the Stourbridge Lion will be completed shortly after that. I will anounce some release dates in the next few days.Best Regards,
