if you've been wondering why the BB hasn't had an NALW update it's because they don't have enough feedback on what we want so post what you want on this thread for an unofficial official feedback page for those and NALW working on the BB I mainly wrote this cuz after talking to Jens_chris found out why there hasn't been ny move and the main reason(s) were not enough info to know what we want fixed/changed and because they are taking a break. SO POST YOUR FEEDBACK!!
check out my trippy Screenshot of the BB in a tunnel here at my previous post if u didn't see it! http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/4326.html tell me what ya think kewl eh LOLZ

G'day PcKiller,This may help you. Have you tried this patch on BB. bbmodsv1.zip by Bob Cooley July 11, 2002. It's in the TS Steam Locomotive library. With this patch, I'm pretty happy with BB's performance now. Especially with the brake setup. This is from Bob Cooley's file-id.diz file.
Big Boy-Sound and Brake Fix
These new .wav, .sms and .eng files will fix the missing sound files and make braking easier as well as improve the "sync" appearence of the drivers and rods with the sound. The sound files will correct the missing and incorrect CAB files.Big Boy sure is a nice engine. Well done. For those wondering why there is no update for the BB – image 5

Well, thats news to me..

Hi..
Well now, thats news to me.. I've seen no correspondance at all from then other NALW members as to lack of feedback. Trust me we know what we need to work on.. The new sounds are almost ready. I'm working on replaceing the FS shovel sounds with the sounds of a mechanical stoker. new firebox fire textures are in place.
The new textures are coming along, which includes multiple road numbers and a weathered skin. Firebox flicker and new steam effects have been added. The engine files are taking the longest, as there are some MSTS "quirks" we have to try and work around. John is doing a decent job there..
As far as those of you who want more smoke, I'd presonally rather not do it, as excessive smoke was not a good thing to see in real life, so I'm not going to push for it in MSTS.. Lots of engineers/firemen got demerits and reprimands from RFE's for "excessive smoke". I suppose we could include two engine files, one really smoky, the other more prototypical..
The main reason you haven't seen anything lately, is that most of us have vacation time due.. I'm off most of August, and I'd rather be up in the mountains than doing MSTS stuff..
Hope that helps everyone who was wondering what was up..
Cheers
Harold (NALW-HAC)

1 suggestion not to push u down cuz that looks AWESOME!! I love the look u gave it. but the bell could be weathered and rusted colored cuz the bell wouldn't be a bright yellow on a loco that's been as weathered as that. LOLZ I love the looks and I always wanted a mechanical stoker sound for some of the engines I have, Great work I think u need to have two engine files one for a prototypical and one for excessive smoke that would be awesome. well keep up the work! J_C told me there wasn't enough feedback so I thought I'd make a thread. well cyas

Hi Harold,First, to you and all who had a hand in making Big Boy, top marks.
A job well done and now some more icing on the cake to come.> I suppose we could include two engine files, one really smoky, the other more prototypical..
I personaly think this is a good idea (no it's excellent) having the two files, would keep both camps very happy. Good compromise. Most engine crews in those "good ol days of steam", yes they were told excessive smoke was a NO! NO!... but one did choose where to make smoke, sometimes if firing a crappy engine was hard not make thick smoke. Also it was great feeling when you had some Rail Fans following your engine and you would pour the coal or oil on, much to their wide eyes and to their delight and to some engine crews as well. It use to be smiles all round. Thick black smoke was all a part of STEAMERS. Anyway no two fireman on steamers, fire engines exactly the same, like in all things, there were firemen, and fireman. Personally the fact that Steam engines CAN make thick black smoke, if it is possible to do that, then why not make it available for those who like to make it "as real as it gets in their eyes". Anyway in real steamers it was not always easy to start off out of a yard with a full jerk and not er, er make at times heaps of black smoke, especially if you were running late and the Train Controller (despatcher) was putting pressure on you to make his crosses. Remember in the 50's & 60's of steam was nothing like today's railways. Er sorry, it was harder work, but far better. > As far as those of you who want more smoke, I'd presonally rather not do it, as excessive smoke was not a good thing to see in real life,
OKay not by these "so called" enlightened days. Could you honesty say if you were standing watching a steamer heading off up a heavy grade and it was billowing thick black smoke, you would not be awe inspired or delighted by the sight. If not, your about the only person in my 50 years I've been involved with Railways, that is happy to say "no black smoke". Of course different story if lived close to the track and you had the washing hanging out to dry and the wind was blowing the black smoke and soot over the washing. That I sure can understand. Sorry, not being clever here, far from it. Just trying to make a good point on "As real as it gets" that's all. Black smoke goes with steam engines, okay maybe only a small percentage of the time, but it's real, and should be a part of Steamers if it's at all possible to do.For those wondering why there is no update for the BB – image 13
I think a lot are inspired by this photo of BB in all her glory.
I know I am, as this photo takes pride and place in my MSTS startup screens and I'm not from the U.S. I've have driven Bayer Garratts 4-8-2 + 2-8-4's, back in the 60's and these are admittedly on a smaller scale to Big Boy, and these were at times real black (oil fired) smokers. I cannot speak for BB, as I've never seen one in real action. But in my MSTS on the MP3, (only route I use) it sure would be nice to somehow make it make black smoke at times, though normally yes, it's a no, no.Again, many thanks for helping to make Big Boy come to reality in MSTS. Black smoke, or, no black smoke. For those wondering why there is no update for the BB – image 14

lilman316, please check your message box.The clothes line washing episode was very, very true from those steamer days.

You think people today, can tell you off. Huh! that's nothing.
Just go back 40 odd years ago and man you ain't seen nothing. Nothing more terrifing than a wife who has just boiled all the wash in a hot wood fired copper, wrung it all out by hand, just hung it out on the clothes line and you not thinking, load the steamer up, and next thing you got this nice good natured lady you usually wave to as you normally go past, suddenly turn into a roaring lion waving her arms around, jumping up and down, shaking her fist at you, yelling at you big time. Left one very red faced. You head off quitely like a dog with your tail between your legs. Back then, it sure was no laughing matter though. Just put one's self in her shoes. For those wondering why there is no update for the BB – image 18

RE: Well, thats news to me..

wondered when someone would notice..FYI. I'm working on the two tone grey passenger scheme for that one as well.. And on the smoke debate.. I agree, that there were times that you would get lots of smoke out of steamers, for whatever reason, and I agree, that it surely is photogenic. However, as was pointed out to me when we were doing the 2816 restoration , excessive smoke is a no-no. Thats not to say that we won't "smoke it up" for photo ops, but
for regular running, its a clear stack preferred, if possible..
I'm all for giving you a choice, and I'm working on eng files that are horrendously smoky, as well as more conservative ones..Cheers

THANKS Harold, I think this will be appreciated by quite a few by the sounds of what I've been reading in the Forums since BB made its debut. This has been an asked issue, Granted, having experience with driving steamers, your right, and it sure is best to fire the engine properly. But even I, who should know better than most, still would like to see the excessive smoke in MSTS, especially up the grades on the MP3 as if I get too carried away when I use a smokey BB, I will just have to wash my CPU and Vid card and inside the monitor afterwards. Only joking here. Thanks again Harold. Look forward to seeing this myself. For those wondering why there is no update for the BB – image 21

RE: for those wondering why there is no update for the

Hello, nice model. I would like boxpok wheels and a fix for the flipping effect when driving over the default 10° switches.
Maybe for a later release a version pre 1950 with the different coolers on the pilot deck and without front coupler. I believe the only shunting operations of a BB where taking coal, sand and water and driving backwards to the freight train.
Eng files can be modified by the user according to the varying preferences. As long as there are no prototypical routes with realistic grades prototypical .eng files will fail for sure.Roman

RE: for those wondering why there is no update for the

Hi there, have been away from home quite some time and trying to catch up with all the news here.
Since Harold is off most of August, maybe I can put in here one more suggestion.
- I noticed that when looking out of the cab during curves I can see the inside of the boiler, as far as there is one. As I understand the camera moves together with the front engine, not with the rear one, where the boiler and cab sits on.
- Being able to sand both engines, instead of only the front one would be nice.
- Having a brake system that keeps the wheels from turning when more or less fully applied would be more than just nice. It´s so easy to check if the wheels are turning or blocked with a steam engine, with a diesel I can never tell. Or is the BB more powerful than its own brakes? Sorry, if this is a silly question, I´m curious.
- Referring to the black/white smoke discussion there comes one more question to my mind. Are both stacks really identical? As I understand, at times the stacks exhaust the used steam and then, at other times smoke from the fire? Or both together? Or one for steam and one for smoke? Would be really nice if someone really experienced would drop a line here!Kind regards!Hans-Peter Franzen

Any suggestions for my silent Big Boy? Thanks

My biggest issues with the big boy is that when your already coupled to a long consist (say 50 loaded coalcars), you can pull'em just fine, but it your not connected, then you couple to them...the car brakes wont fully release and you wont be able to budge them. Also the horn of course.Longhairedwizard

Hans..
The draft created by exhaust steam being ejected through the stack is what clears the smoke from the firebox. The two stacks are actually on top of a common smokebox. The reason that there were two stack has to do with getting the exhaust area needed to handle large
volumes of exhaust steam and smoke. I'm not sure if BB had one or two ejectors under those stacks, I suspect 2..cheers

Hi Harold,Got it to work this morning I had downloaded all the patches first I have been in England for the last Month. I got around to checking files for July and saw all the Big Boy patches so I went on my treasure Hunt through the Train Sim library till I found him hehehe. I note on the date Ya'll released it I was drinking Pullman Beer on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Great Locomotive.
