I was surfing for GM products....Oh all right, you caught me...I was looking for info on GM's 1955 "Aerotrain" and found this jewel...This is what happens when you build an SD to Army specifications. An AlCo/EMD/Baldwin/.....Of course you can always join the Air Force...Finally, did you ever wonder how the Coast Guard moves about on land? They use GEEPs too!Apparently the armed forces in general are always on the lookout for a few good engineers!Frank Musick Lehigh & Atlantic Railway, Canal Navigation Company <www.KelticSylk.com>
I know where that bottom picture was taken.Seeing that bridge ill bet anything thats the navy yards under the goldstar bridge in New London Connecticut.
Actually, this was at the old Central Vermont roundhouse, under the same bridge, but on the west side of the river, back in the '70s. The locomotive is sittin on the turntable. It was actually one of the CV's boiler Geeps that used to haul the Montrealer and Ambassador, and not a US military unit. The paint job celebrated history of the Coast Guard, whose academy grounds were (and are) bisected by this line, which eventually reaches White River Junction.Sadly, this roundhouse burned down a few months back. The turntable had been missing for many years, after the CV vacated the facility. I got my first cab ride on sister unit 4926, back inthe mid-'60s, when this was still a very busy facility... -Phil
I think that Air Force SW is a unit used to haul rail mobile ballstic missles. i'm preety sure the Titan III is a balstic missle. One would think they woudln't advertise about their missles though?
As far as I know, there was only a Titan I and II.------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!
