EMD BL2 new diesel for MSTS

ok, well I did post this about 1 hour before the topics went off line and it looks like it got lost. I can't find it anyway. I would like to hear your feed back on my new diesel here, its an EMD BL2 the Branch Line Locomotive that was the link between F series and the G series. Now they were not a big hit with EMD customers and only 59 were built but... Its a fun locomotive for sure from our simming stand point. So what I would like to know is are you interested in this wee beastie, for your favorite route? your response will guage a level of interest and help me figure out where to slot the loco into my production schedule. Rest assured it will get done cause I like it alot.

I'll take one each of B&M's three paint schemes, and Western Maryland #81!BTW, can you angle the cab's front a bit? The photos I have seen of the prototype show that the front window had a slight rake and was pointed in the middle...Take care....and thanks for making my fav. freight loco...beats all the geeps!Kurt

They weren't really odd balls. Truth was they were an early design aimed at using the reliability of the F style locomotives, and the versatility of the hood locos with walk ways. The idea was supposedly to provide a cheap locomotive that could be used as either a freight or passenger locomotive on light lines.I think most major railroads had them. I know that there are a few still in operation.

I have to say that this is one model that "I want" also! I vote for BAR blue, as my memories of these units are from 1980 or so when they were still operating them (and their F's). They sure kept them in fine shape.

Undoubtably the BL-2 was a very homely locomotive. I would love to have one in B&M livery. They had four units, 1550-1553. They have a class about them. Reading the comments on site, they were not beautiful, but a piece of history. If one wants ugly, what I call the ugliest locomotive of all time, the New Haven DL-109.Lcken

I WANT! I'll take it in any skin. I just want 1 I have loved those damn locos forever no they are not the sleeping beauty of trains thats the big boy comin out on the fourth. but it is one worth a second glance and to run (if I ever find out how to use the RE) on my route of the BN Nebraska panhandle rails. (i'm gonna attempt but probably fail to make the route and upload it. it will be my first if I get it done and I would want to know if ny one would be interested in it) and it would do good skinned in a BN livery even though they never had one who said I can't use my imagination. I also have some realistic consits they use around here so I'm adding those to my route package along with if i ever get any info on it's progress another treat to add (you wouldn't probably know about this unless you lived in boxbutte county) but the engine that brought the courthouse from Hemingford NE to Alliance NE. read up on NE history and you'll here about it.

The B&M units got traded in to EMD for GP-18's. Lots of parts for the 6 unit order were taken from the traded BL-2's and reused.

A quote from Trains Magazine "10 locomotives that didn't change the world":"2. EMD BL2, 1948: Alco's RS2 had visibility and versatility all over EMD's F3. Electro-Motive answered with the BL2-and had a locomotive it couldn't afford to manufacture. Unlike the F unit, whose structural box could be slung about by a traveling crane with impunity, the BL2 once started stayed right in that spot until virtually complete. The parts, men, and tools had to go to the BL2 rather than the BL2 to them, which negated the first stumble-58 production units at a factory that built things in the thousands.
<Jack> Wheelihan says: 'History has got it wrong: the customers liked them! But manufacturing complained so loudly that EMD had to bring Dick Dilworth out of retirement to lead the GP7 design team.'"It's not as ugly as the GP7, which was designed to be so ugly that railroads would relegate it to branchline work to keep it from being seen, so it would do real work.

This is not the J-train. This is a special excursion train for ticket holders only. Next stop Alabama Avenue, stand clear of the doors.

Seriously, though..GP7's and GP9's I notice are still the 'backbone' of many Class 1 railroads..Guilford Rail up here seems to have more early GP's than it does SW or SD units..At least in my area..
And how's the BLT..er, BL2 coming along?

Gee, I never thought of a BL2 as Ugly, more as cute. I guess I come from an older generation that thinks the GP9 is the most attractive, and the B30-7 sd70mac whatever is the ugly. Hey! Don't flame! that's just my own personal opinion. I prefer engines from the forties-fifties.

It's unique in it's own right (and I've been at the throttle of one) but IMO EMD hasn't built anything good looking since the F and E unit series (and I've always loved the sound of an old 567 prime mover winding up).An I ain't that young either (actually it's just a state of mind ... 42 here).
