RE: Conrails smallest Locomotive?......here's something for you engine designers...hehe

Chief Conrail Mechanic Phil R Upp, AKA SPARKY to his friends, decides he needs to move this RS1 slug into the maintenance shed for some much needed work. Not finding an idle engine on standby with an engineer aboard to assist he does the next best thing. From some spare parts lying around he builds an MU remote control buggy in about 30 Minutes. When he was ready, he says... "Hey Rocky! Watch me drive the union steward nuts", as he proceeds to drive his "control stand on truck" though the yard.
Neat.Something a KitBasher would admire.

Well, I did try to describe what "I" thought it was used for with my little "made up" story...Based on the fact that it appears it does not have it's own power source, I might not be too far off.PeteConrails smallest Locomotive?… here's something for – image 9

I kind of assumed that the box on top was an electric generator. although they'd have to do some modifications to your average standby generator to make it output something that'll turn those traction motors.Scott

Maybe it's that yellow thing hidden by the roof. maybe it's on the underside. You're not going to have much luck moving a slug without some electricity somewhere. I don't see any cables connecting it to anything else, and I find it even harder to believe that there might be batteries in there, so I chose the only thing that seemed feasible. I don't really know. Maybe LHW will return to this thread and tell us more. He at least found the picture somewhere.

Boy is that an awkward "locomotive"! looks like the bnsf chopped up an sd45 and left the shell of one of it trucks in the back shop and somebody said" lets make a locomotive to move bigger trains around in the backshop" can't imagine what the person who made this up was on when he made this. Gotta be the oddest loco i've ever seen.

RE: Conrails smallest Locomotive?......here's something for you engine designers...hehe

Looks like a small engine used to switch the shops. I once saw a picture of a Pennsy B6 0-6-0 that the shops converted into a Shop loco... All they did is remove the tender, add a coal bunker, and move the water tank onto the locos main body. But as far as I can tell, it looks like Conrail needed a shop switcher, and instead of buying one, why not just build one from spare parts? I wonder if that thing is powered by one of those Briggs and Stratton 12HP Riding Lawn mower engines?TVRRMAN18 Year Old avid Pennsy Fan

LAST EDITED ON Jun-20-02 AT 09:12 PM (EDT)If im not mistaken that is a model right? And by the way, the Briggs and Straton engines are quite powerful! I once mowed down a patch of grass i thought would drown the poor mower!

Here are some links to the website where I found this little guy. I was doing some research for my upcoming 1980 era Conrail activity pack (for the OHRR and NEC routes, and maybe a few others), and I came across some great sites. They are a must for Conrail & PC fans. The caption for that pic is:A Conrail Mule at Collinwood Yard, April, 1982. RE: Conrails smallest Locomotive?......here's something

That one slug you're refering to in your pics is a rebuilt SD40-2, while the other is an alco RSD-12. I am assuming that both were wreck-damaged equipment that Conrail rebuilt by keeping the traction motors and electrical equipment and replacing the Motor with one huge concrete slab. RE: Conrails smallest Locomotive?......here's something for you engine designers...hehe

hmm. No control stand on it. None that you can see, but look along that near walkway, there's a cable there and what looks to be a remote control. For a shop mule, that would make sense since it would allow the controller to move front and back to uncouple his charges. Slugs, locos, whatever.Furthermore, that might explain the dings on one end. Controller didn't pay attention like he should have.As for power source, it wouldn't have to be diesel electric. Looks like they stuck a critter's prime mover on it. Probably diesel mechanical drive. That would mean that sure, it could only handle one engine at a time...but it'd probably push things around rather than pull them. It's much easier to push a heavy load than it is to pull one.I'd suspect that it would work like this then:Charlie needs to bring the alco slug into the shop, one of the traction motors have gone to crap.Hopping onto the little mule, he takes the control into his hand and putt putts out after it. Running around the slug, he bumps up to the back of it and couples. It's just a matter of him running down to hook up the air hoses, run the compressor up and start his little motor. Straining hard, his little mule begins pushing hard, amking a very nasty sound as it does it.(exhaust is away from the camera) It takes a few minutes, but he finally gets the thing moving and to the proper place in the shop where he shuts off his diesel motor and hooks up to the trolleys overhead , supplying power to the traction motors that are STILL in the truck's axles. Now, using the outside control he can walk around and shove the thing along. That's just my two pence...
