Jun-01-02, 02:51 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Hey jens christ sad to see the Challenger project go" LAST EDITED ON Jun-01-02 AT 02:52 AM (EDT)That is most definately not a NP challenger. It looks to me like a Western Maryland Locomotive. Most of the challengers conformed to 1 of 2 UP designs. Clinchfield, Deleware and Hudson, and Western Pacific had copies of the "early" UP design. The more familar "late" UP design (including 3985) had no imitators; however, during world war 2 the wartime production board diverted 6 challengers from UP to the Rio Grande. After the war Rio Grande sold them to Clinchfield, thus Clinchfield had representatives of both UP classes. Now for the oddballs, Baldwin built some locomotives for both DRGW and Western Maryland, I do not know much about these locos other than they were different from UPs. The other oddballs were the ones built for Northern Pacific along with copies for subsidiary Spokane, Portland and Seattle (two of which were loaned to other parent Great Northern). The NP engines were very distinctive, featuring compressors mounted on the smokebox front, extra large firebox to burn the low grade "Rosebud" coal (SP&S' burned oil)all weather cabs(class Z7 and Z8), plus several other details. The NP class Z8 locomotives were heavier and more powerful than any other challenger. With the exception of the two Baldwin classes all of the challengers were built by Alco. Sheesh, what started as a quick "not NP" turned into a short dissertation on the challenger type.Message Areas - "Hey jens christ sad to see the Challenger project go" – image 2Bringing the steam locomotive into the digital age.

I just happen to have a lot of books on Northwest railroads and my father is a UP fan, so I kinda became familiar with challengers. You probably know a whole lot more about Yellowstones than I do (except maybe NP Z5s and SP AC9s).Message Areas - "Hey jens christ sad to see the Challenger project go" – image 3Bringing the steam locomotive into the digital age.
