May-29-02, 02:13 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: UP?" However, UP did used to lease the Amtrak and Flordia Fun Train F40s quite a bit until they started ordering Dash 9s and the AC440CWs... quite a few trains in Seattle came up with 3-4 lashed up as SOLID power... sneakingly of course..always at night where you can't get pics.Brian E. May-29-02, 06:11 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: UP?" Yeah, I saw a few of the leased Amtrak F40's on trains in Kansas, too. As you say, they always seem to be at night so that you can't get pictures. I spoke to a crewman who said that they were not suited to freight duties, they were geared so high that they would overheat traction motors on a hard pull. May-30-02, 03:03 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: UP?" UP never owned any, but they did lease them from Amtrak for a while. However, CSX DOES have two - both, of course, are ex-Amtrak, and i believe they are used for an Executive train or something. Also, another freight railroad (can't remeber which anymore!) bought and butchered some of the former Amtrak units. There are pictures of them in Beech Grove having their noses shaved back to make room for a front platform. Almost too much horror for me to bear to look ------ BUZZ ------

May-30-02, 04:13 PM (EDT) 10. "RE: UP?" Are you sure you're not mixing up the F40s with Amtrak's failed SDP40Fs which Santa Fe bought?
(Very similar, but the SDP40Fs have three-axle bogies and a 'standard' GM nose, not the tapered stuff that the F40 uses). Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-30-02, 04:22 PM (EDT) 11. "RE: UP?" Santa Fe did not buy all of them, some were sent back to EMD and the parts used for the F40's. The way the Amtrak legislation was written they had to do that and carry the SDP40 builder numbers on the F40's.Kevin Arceneaux Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-02-02, 10:02 AM (EDT) 16. "RE: UP?" Yes, the F40PHR. "R" standing for "Rebuilt from SDP40F components".As for UP, they used the Amtrak F40s when UP bought SP, scrapped lots of SP's motive power, and suddenly realized they didn't have enough locos to go 'round anymore ------ BUZZ ------

CSX leased two of Amtrak's F40's (now redesignated FE7A's by CSX) and use them almost exclusively for the business train. ALMOST being the key word. I have seen them on regular freights before. Once in photos from Philadelphia with them leading a mixed freight, and also saw them in Baltimore back in 2000 in a 7 or 8 unit lashup, DIT.Chris Denbow - Baltimore, Md.

May-30-02, 11:56 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: UP?" During the 1997 power crunch, I'd see Amtrak Phase III F40PHs on UP trains through my home town. (Jefferson, TX. The former MoPac rabbit line) However I never saw one at the point, they were always trailing units. To my knowledge these were short-term leases.Blake Harris

Jun-01-02, 05:50 PM (EDT) 15. "RE: UP?" The only time I've see CSX's FE7As on the point of a frieght was when they were being transfered to get new paint. Here are some pics taken at Queensqate.CSX 9992
CSX 9993
BTW, on the CSX Photo Archives they refer to the FE7As as F40PH2s. I dont mean to start a flame war, but what source did u get the FE7A designation from?
