May-27-02, 06:38 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: Just checking on a couple projects..." Hoooooold on!Far as I know, Buzz has not made the AEM-7 shape file yet. He is VERY busy with the Horizon Fleet Coaches and the different variations of the F40PH for the commuter F40 pack. I would like to point out that NALW builds things together, it's not one person doing the whole thing, so it might take time for members to get back to each other. Furthermore, when you make a 3D model, you have to build it (duh!) which takes a while, especially in 3D Canvas. Think of those triangles! Then you have to check the model in the sim. You have to export it, which takes 15 min. Then you find somthing wrong with the model...so you have to fix it! Then you have to export it again, which takes another 15 min. Next, you find somthing wrong again! Then you have to fix it, export it, load sim, check it, find somthing is wrong...and usually you have to do this around 30+ times before you are satisfied. After you do that....you have to texture the model, which will take a couple of days, if not weeks, or months, and you have to consider that it will take a couple of weeks to make the actual textures too. Then you find somthing wrong after you export it into the sim with textures. You go back, correct it, export it, load sim, check it, repeat 15+ times. You finally got the locomotive and textures the way you want it. Now for an .eng file which can take a week....Lighting which can take two weeks for a large model....(I bet Kevin Shea's F45 took 2 months!)Make an .SD file...which takes about a day or a week.Do cabview...2/3 weeks.Sound...2 weeks to 2 months.Screenshots and announcements: 10 hoursPackage it up: 1 hour/1 dayUpload it: 30 min./One hourAppear in file libary after upload: 2 days. That's a while, isn't it? Now don't get mad cause they don't tell you everything RIGHT NOW. Wait, don't expect it. It'll surprise you one day, and you'll be VERY happy. As for the Viewliner, I've got side textures added, and a body shell. Visit www.klwtrainsim.cjb.net for the latest updates. Note that it's still being re-done and not everything is listed.I hope you will think twice before getting mad because it's not here WHEN YOU WANT IT.Be nice.Kurt

May-27-02, 07:18 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: Just checking on a couple projects..." I don't know how long it takes from .3dc actually, but you have to build all those different distance ranges, save 'em all, put them in the util folder, and crank up Conv3DS, then put it all in a folder, convert your textures....Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-27-02, 08:59 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Just checking on a couple projects..." LAST EDITED ON May-27-02 AT 09:03 PM (EDT)With 3dCanvas you do not have to run conv3ds, so that saves a little time. What you might want to do (though you shouldn't do it every time just for testing) is run your .s files through ffeditc_unicode to compress them. It really only takes a few seconds to export from 3DCanvas, and like I said, it exports directly into the .s file format. But still, there is all the other stuff that can make a project take weeks or months!Oh, also, as for distance ranges, 3DC handles those more or less automatically, too. You can control it by arranging your model a certain way: the "main" object makes up the main distance level that will always be shown, and you put smaller details in sub-objects that will be removed with distance. Also, if each object uses only one material for that object you can "optimize" the distance levels, which will not only do the aforementioned trimming of objects, but will reduce points and faces in a rather intelligent way, also. I was resistant at first to the "automaticness" of it, but I've found it really works pretty well. . .and quick, too! No designing of many detail levels.troub
