May-26-02, 10:17 AM (EDT) "3D Model building and having a life. " Ignorant posters to this forum seem to have their pleasure centers satisfied by seeing themselves ask for the status of a Work In Progress and then rightfully starting a series of flaming responses to their requests.Let me start by saying this:

Rule (1)
"When a model is completed, it will be announced. We have seen that every long awaited model has been adequately announced when it was ready and uploaded"Rule (2)
"There has never been a connection between how much a Work In Progress model is begged for and how soon it arrives. The model makers seem impervious to begging... with the exception that too much B*TCHING will actually make them stop development of a model altogether"
3D Model making requires:1. Research
2. Serious CAD Work
3. Texture painting and bitmap manipulation
4. Re-work
5. Testing
6. More Re-work
7. Testing
8. More Re-work
9. Testing (Get the picture?)Maybe the reason it takes *me* so long to create a 3D model is because I'm new at creating my own. Like many people here, I also work for a living and it has nothing to do with trains or drawing.Given that I can only work on a model for maybe an hour or 2 in the evening after work (and then maybe only 2-3 nights per week...) progress is slow. I spent 3 hours last night on just "car end details" on one end of a car I'm working on.I'm not retired. I have a family. I have a life.Does this help anyone understand that while a model builder would like to get feedback on a Work In Progress, they might get a bit upset when accused of producing vaporware?Email is not evil. Please use it when appropriate.Message Areas - "3D Model building and having a life. " – image 1

10. smashing the keyboard against the monitor, because MSTS doesn't accept the model
11. rework the model
12. rework the textures, because of #11 the textures must be reassigned again

1493. If you are lucky (and not in hospital yet) this endless loop will be terminated successfully sometime and you have your model... (with a lot of compromises...)Jens-Chris----------

Having over 25 locomotives, routes, misc., that you have to do this with....visit www.klwtrainsim.cjb.net (which I just re-opened) and see the list under "KLWTrainSim projects"...(and that's just stuff to go ON a route..I've got 2 routes being worked on, one based on a prototype, and a third in the works!!!Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

" How about trying to use a 3D modeler to create a 3D model and to texture it after buying or downloading the 3D modeler and installing it? I know how to create 3D models but trying to texture a 3D model using one bitmap and UVW mapping may send me to the mental hospital in a straitjacket. Jeffrey. May-26-02, 09:46 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: 3D Model building and having a life. " Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that mapping a bitmap to a 3D model frame is actually harder than creating the 3d model frame! Re-skinning a model is a piece of cake compared to getting the bitmap there in the first place.I have a lot more grey hairs after my first UVW mapping sessions.Message Areas - "3D Model building and having a life. Spending hours in 3DC putting finishing touches on your model, texturing is spot on in the program, everything looks perfect. Until you load it into TS and all your textures are shifted.19. threaten MSTS's existence.Bill Message Areas - "3D Model building and having a life. Aaah, the joys of loco design. I love it when the textures have a mind of their own and map the least expected parts of a model...Cheers,

May-28-02, 11:56 AM (EDT) 11. "RE: 3D Model building and having a life. " Amen...Not that I think all the "legends" like NALW, TA, or Monsieur Gaetan don't have lives...I'm pretty sure they're in the same boat as the rest of us. Wives, kids, the odd kitten walking the keyboard now and then. Not to mention the yard work or the Oldsmobile restoration rusting away in the garage. What marvels me is that Gaetan produces all those beautiful models using TSM. There is still hope for my clumsy attempts...One of the things that is really extraordinary about this hobby is the fact that folks share their models, or charge affordable prices...How many times have I opened Model Railroader and wished I could own one of those beautiful brass locomotives...Without a mortgage payment. Here, people not only build prize winning models, they give you a copy too. There's something that doesn't happen at the NMRA covention...If I haven't mentioned it before, thanks to all of you for sharing all this beautiful stuff and inspiring the rest of us.Damn, I got my logo to work!Frank Musick

May-28-02, 01:52 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: 3D Model building and having a life. " Thanks. It took me 2 months to produce my first model. Most of that was "learning" time, but it still took long hours. We still have hosers who start topics by saying "You've had 'x' months... where is my <blankletyblank> engine?"I'm at the point where I want to reach out and smack someone. And I'm not the one they are directing the question at. Imagine how the recipients feel...Guess I'll put my AEM7 on the back burner. I don't want anyone yelling at me for it.Message Areas - "3D Model building and having a life. " – image 13

Jun-02-02, 12:38 PM (EDT) 13. "RE: 3D Model building and having a life. " I have said it before and I will say it again, you designers and builders do awesome work, and I am so glad you are all willing to share it. I am attempting my own design, buildings to go on the route which I am working on. So far, the process has been less than satisfactory, and I have shelved the idea for the the last three days or so, until the blood pressure comes down. All I am doing is designing 3 flat apartment buildings, but in block long sections (about 5 buildings per "block"). Add to the route design frustration (it's my fault, I wound up creatiing, by accident, a rather complex interchange between 3 different mainlines.... still have yet to figure it out... but it's gettign there. Once that's done signals are next, then roads, then buildings, and then hopefully a finished product to upload. Timetable on this project? When it's done, it will be there. Anyway, I think those of you who constantly want to know what's up, and when it will be done, well, in the immortal words of my mom "Be patient, it will be done, when it gets done." or, my dad "When it's done, I'll tell you." Lots of people have lots of requests, and since you aren't paying for it, you have to wait, bottom line. This theme comes up quite often, and it's nutty, it really is. To all of you designers out there, keep it up, and we love ya... you guys do fantastic work, and unlike others, I can wait to see what the next masterpiece is going to be... because the wait will be worth it.... .
