May-12-02, 05:26 AM (EDT) "Engine (hand) brake on steam locos?" I have searched the forums, but have not found any definitive statement whether the engine (hand) brake works on a steam loco in the sim. The keys are defined as < and >, but they have no effect at all. Is it just another bug?Has anyone come up with a fix? Relying on the train brake for shunting/switching is a pain because of the time lag.Thanks.Don't let the computer WIN! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

YUP!! the handbake on Con McCarthy's Mikado V2 is set on by default and can be used to hold the locomotive. You have to release it before driving. Have a look in the eng file for that to see how it's done. The only reason the keys don't work is because no handbrake has been defined in the .engBest Regards

Fozzy, a true leader and a mine of information (a little Cornish pastiche of puns there).Which leads me onto my next question/s regarding use of brakes on a steam loco, fitted with WH compressor, during shunting operations:In TS, is 'engine brake' and 'hand brake' the same?During shunting, is the 'engine/hand brake' used to help slow/stop the locomotive?I find the lap(?) time using 'train brake' often means the locomotive runs past the spot I'd like to stop it.

>In TS, is 'engine brake' and
>'hand brake' the same? Ermmmm Yup fraid so! no screwdown brake in MSTS!>During shunting, is the 'engine/hand brake'
>used to help slow/stop the
>locomotive? Absolutely!! It's the only way to stop em sometimes.... I have a habit of flinging the pole in the oposite direction when shunting. It doesn't quite work properly in MSTS... on a real loco just moving it into reverse while you're traveling forwards will slow you down because of the back pressure it creates in the cylinder and the feed pipes. On top of that if you're shunting unfitted freight then you have to use it.There is another brake on my loco... we have a steam brake as well as train brakes and screwdown brake. but they saw fit not to bother modeling that in MSTS.>I find the lap(?) time using
>'train brake' often means the
>locomotive runs past the spot
>I'd like to stop it.There is a trick to this, that I use in the real world, as do most other drivers... Use the brake early... pull your speed down than back off on the brake and let the engine run on, till you're near your stoping point. Then you should have a pre prepared brake that hasn't got such a long charge time, (Theoretically) LOL but there's theory and there's the non reality of MSTS. It works with real engines.Really the main thing to do is not be in too much of a hurry! less speed more haste as they say!You know what Bazza! It must be all that blood rushing to your head from living upside down that causes this trouble with the shunting! LOL... I always wondered what glue you use to keep the upside down engines on the track there, or maybe it's big magnets! ROFL One thing that's really wierd is when they film your steam engines down there they must turn the camera upside down! cus they always look right way up on my telly! LOLHave Fun!!Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)P.S. Just remembered i forgot to send you that valve gear file!! oops! sorry it's been a hell of a busy few days! I'll go do it now.

Suggestion tried and it works, my first independently braked loco, yahoo!
