May-02-02, 06:18 PM (EDT) "Coupler Gaps Revisited" Hi Folks,Is it just me, or does TSM just suck at positioning the cars at the appropriate distance between each other? For example, I built a freight car from scratch. I didn't shift it at all on the Z axis, but when I build the car, and run it through MSTS, I am *always* getting a substantial gap between each car. Observe:Message Areas - "Coupler Gaps Revisited" – image 1Am I doing something wrong? I thing its pretty retarded if I have to screw around with the model (ie: shifting it up and back, checking thru MSTS, etc. ad nauseum). Why can't TSM simply create the model with the proper gaps without me having to mess around with shifting models, screwing with the .WAG files, etc.?Furthermore, it seems that if the model is reversed, then it will still exhibit the gapping on one end, but may be coupled correctly on the other. This is really starting to get on my nerves. It seems I can't build ANY models without having to screw around with it to work out properly in MSTS.Is anyone else having this problem too, or am I just the only goof with these troubles????Is it really necessary for me to keep going into TSM to shift the model along the Z axis, or can I screw with the .WAG or .SD files to correct this errant behaviour? BTW: I have tried using the bounding box correction program, but it doesn't seem to fix this gapping problem.Brian. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-02-02, 06:35 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" I think its fixed.I went back and re-read all of the coupler messages on 3dtrains.com. One of the messags suggested that a bounding box should be drawn around the model. Once I did that, everything seemed to work ok.Whatever. All I care about is that the model is positioned properly.Brian. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I'm sure it's on this site.

May-02-02, 08:17 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" Here's a new one. What causes the cars to stand still, even though the locomotives move? I recompiled one of my cars, and when I run MSTS, and move the locos, the locos start to move, but the cars stay put.Furthermore, when I hit 3 to go to the end of the train, it only will go to the last loco in the consist. Also, when I hit CTRL-RIGHT ARROW to go to the next car, it will again only go as far as the last loco.Arrrgh, this stupid TSM program is killing me!Brian.PS - here's a look at my consist with the bounding boxes on. I don't think there's a problem here, but what the hell do I know anyhow.Message Areas - "Coupler Gaps Revisited" – image 2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 00:06 AM (EDT) 5. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" The bounding box looks right in the picture. Your description sounds like the locos aren't coupled to the cars. Can you couple or uncouple?Stew Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 07:57 AM (EDT) 10. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" LAST EDITED ON May-03-02 AT 08:27 AM (EDT)Hey Stew,When I bring up the uncouple menu, the only thing that appears on it are the locomotives. There aren't any cars associated with the consist.UPDATE - I think it has something to do with when I merge the projects. I failed to mention that when I first added the message to the forum. I just tried deleting the second half from the consist, and when I recompiled and ran it, it worked fine. All of the cars showed up, and they moved with the train.HOWEVER - When I merged the project back in and tried it, it failed. So I'm guessing there is a problem with merge? Here's what I did when I merged the project:Once the project was merged, I went in and renamed all parts on the merged file. I then set the PIVOT's axis (a part I placed between the two cars sharing the truck) to the origin. I then proceeded to change all of the other parts to center their axis around itself (object). Is there something wrong with this procedure??If I can't merge the file, how can I make two separate projects span a single truck without having any bounding box issues???Brian. May-03-02, 04:17 AM (EDT) 8. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" I solved this problem by recentring the train in TSM (ie select all the parts and use the command to move the centre automatically in relation to the origin..I forget the command exactly.)
Next I reedited the bounding box manually until the loco spaced with the wagons.Simon Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 07:33 AM (EDT) 9. "RE: Coupler Gaps Revisited" Hehe, I'm glad everyone likes the open autoracks. I just need to add a few more details, and they're ready to roll!BTW: The loaded cars are about 3k polys and the unloaded cars are less than 2500 polys right now, so they won't kill your framerates completely. I tried to balance framerates without sacrificing detail.Brian. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
