Apr-29-02, 03:45 PM (EDT) "Painshop Pro 7.x Translucency Tutorial" LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-02 AT 03:55 PM (EDT)Hi Folks,This is a mini guide for creating translucent windows for users of Paint Shop Pro 7.x. There might be a more efficient way of doing this, and if there is, please let me know!Anyhow, on with the guide:Before you begin, make sure that the texture file is saved in .TGA. One other suggestion is to change the colour of the transparent backgrounds (the transparent background has the checkerboard design). Its really hard to cut out the windows when the background and transparent background is white!). To change this colour, go to FILE -> PREFERENCES -> GENERAL PROGRAM PREFERENCES. Go to the transparency tab, and change it to a different colour (Red works pretty good for me).Once you load up the file with the windows you want to cut out, do this:1) On the MASKS menu, select NEW -> SHOW ALL. Nothing appears to happen, which is correct.2) On the MASKS menu, select EDIT. You will see the palette on the right change to shades of grey. The way that the colours work is the closer to black you select on the pallete, the more translucent they become. At the extreme ends of the scale, black will be completely open (as if there wasn't a pane of glass present), while completely white is opaque (You can't see through it).3) With the colour selected, use your paintbrush to remove the areas where the windows belong. One thing I found is that when you use the colours to paint, they don't actually show up on the places where the windows belong. So if you take black and paint, then you take white and paint, you will notice that they don't appear as black and white, but rather shades of the background representing the colours. So a darker and lighter shade of the background will appear. It sounds confusing, but try it out and you'll see what I mean.4) When you have finished punching out the windows, from the MASK menu select SAVE TO ALPHA CHANNEL. Give the new alpha channel a name, and you're done! One thing to keep in mind is that you can only have one alpha channel per texture file.If you need any other help, or if this is confusing, please let me know. Also, if there's enough interest, I'll write a mini tutorial on cab creation using Train Sim Modeler and Paintshop Pro. Let me know.Brian. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Pete, You will find that you need V7, transparency doesn't work properly when you output it from V6, there was a bug in it that stoped it working.Plus another thing to remember is that the original model must have transparency properly asigned in the materials for it to work. If the original model didn't have transparency then you can't actually add it in. Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)P.S. Brian, great short tutorial. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If you havn't hit the problem then I guess you're OK with it. But there have been a couple of reports of it in the forum with no actual final solution found, except to upgrade.Best Regards,

May-01-02, 09:25 PM (EDT) 8. "RE: Painshop Pro 7.x Translucency Tutorial" My windows are all broken (damned vandals!) so translucency isn't a problem I face at the moment. Meanwhile, any tutorial on the subject is most welcome.I seem to recollect there is a fishhook with using .tga textures, the maximum resolution being 4096 colours(?) which may explain the diminished colours? Is my recollection correct, or have I lost a few more of my ever diminishing supply of coloured miggles*?(*Just testing Fozzy's command of obscure English phrases.)Don't let the computer WIN! LOL Unfortunately it no longer trades as a "Railroad Park" but a (supposedly) Family Adventure Park, with fairground rides and other things that have rather ruined it (from a rail enthusiast point of view anyway). I think if you visited it now you might be a little disappointed in the way it's gone. Good business no doubt though, and If I owned it then I've no doubt it would probably have gone the same way.... Just the way of the world!! Compete or Die....Best Regards,

May-09-02, 11:29 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: Painshop Pro 7.x Translucency Tutorial" Hi Brian,Very good tute, most informative. I'd be interested in a bit of a rundown in cab design. I've worked out basic cabs but more info would be greatly received. I for one would be most interested in a cab tute.Cheers,
Matt A
