Apr-30-02, 07:50 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: Can someone make me a F40PHM-3C , you will be my god" Well its pretty close to an F40phm-2c but its noticeably longer to house an extra large engine. The commuter train i take uses a fleet F40PHM-3C's because they need the extra power to make it up steep hills. There really slick looking. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

The F40PHs run the HEP off the prime mover, and that uses up more gas (and sometimes overheats the engine), so some commuter railroads prefer the longer Motive Power Inc./Boise Locomotive Company's F40PHM-3C.Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-30-02, 08:13 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Can someone make me a F40PHM-3C , you will be my god" Oh yeah forgot to mention that the "C" designation refers to either a Caterpillar or Cummins diesel HEP engine. The "M" refers to the stretched frame Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Just wasn't overly familiar with that engine designation. Got some of those almost in my own backyard, on the "Coaster" in San Diego County!!!One comment, though, I don't think holds true....aboutroads preferring this unit because of fuel consumption. I think it's more to do with lower initial cost. Why? Because "Coaster" did start out with these units....and recently decied to go with the more "normal" F59PHI. they have two of them, 3001 and 3002....to go with their F40PHM-3C's 2101-2106.
