Apr-23-02, 08:19 PM (EDT) "I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" Ya know, I just am ready to give up in these forums!! The first two pages of this forum contain 50 subjects. And almost TWENTY of them are "I want this", "We need this" "Where is this" "I gotta have this" "why isn't this out yet" sort of messages.Instead of all this wanting, needing, gotta have-ing, -- at the expense of others' talents -- why don't some of these Train Simmers CREATE WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR instead of wanting everyone else to do the work????I'd bet if you had to PAY a few bucks for every worthwhile download, there wouldn't be all this sort of posting. (I'm also willing to bet that most of it is coming from high-school age or younger too.....ones that have absolutely NO idea what it is to have to WORK for a living to pay rent/mortgage, bills, feed families, etc.)I would certainly create some of the power that's being asked for -- IF I knew how to do it. First, I don't know where to start. Second, I have a family, a job, and house projects to take care of. That leaves very little time for doing much else, believe it or not. I would LOVE to know where some people get the time to do some of the fantastic creations that we've all been able to download (and they share their work for free!!)THANKS TO ALL who have put countless hours of work into some of the outstanding stuff you've been sharing. And for those who NEED, WANT, GOTTA HAVE, etc., -- how about showing your appreciation in some way other than NEEDING and WANTING and GOTTA HAVE?????????????? Some build what others seem to need. I can't speak for shoskins, but my feeling is, it is perfectly okay to ask "is someone making..." or "could someone help me find...", but many people have gotten kind of rude with their "requests" with little regard to the amount of work required to build a model.I don't think you have anything to worry about, dude! Apr-24-02, 00:29 AM (EDT) 5. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" I have usually very much time :I have no friends, except the train-simmers here, who like my work. I have sooooo much time because of this.
After homework for school I can sit me on 3 pm on the comp and sometimes even leave at 8 pm the comp.
You see, I have very much time and at the weekends almost all my time is spent on the comp, no matter whether playing or modelling...Have a nice day !!

>Jens-Chris Jens, your work in modeling is as other's have told you...first rate! But it makes me sad to hear you are spending so much time alone at a computer. Surely there are othe boys (and girls) in your area that would value you as a friend, especially since you could teach them so much in the art of the computer. You, Jens, would gain much from them too! Best regards,

Here in this area, there aren't (m)any people interested in RR, especially in U.S. rails.
Moreover here aren't many people interested in computers and 3D design...Jens-Chris----------

Apr-25-02, 02:32 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" I've been at my first locomotive project for about three weeks and am amazed at how much is involved. Just the research alone...
jeez. Then there are the computer issues, and you have to know a painting tool, a modelling tool and the list goes on. And, of course, no one seems to be clamouring for a 4-4-2 or an 0-4-0T.
Everyone seems to want a Big Boy or an Allegheny, or a Challenger, UP 4-12-2, Y6b, Vgn 2-10-10-2, quadruple-headed Erie
Triplexes...Oh Well,

Au Contraire. I have been clamoring for a 4-4-2 in Hiawatha style. (an 0-4-0T is in the library,by the way.)I understand it takes a while to do the models. Heck, how long have I spent on a repaint tweaking it around?
I get angry at all the newbies that come in and think that the designers are at their beckoning. Apr-25-02, 02:55 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" Personally, I don't mind doing requests. However, like most of the modellers out there, I get pissy when people start demanding models, or keep pestering me on a daily basis.I'm not adverse to the weekly "How's the project going, Brian?", but don't ask on a daily basis. That's annoying. The designers will update you on status when they feel they have made headway on a model. Like most of us, we have a life outside of designing (some of us even work for a living!). So if you haven't heard from your favourite designers in a while, its probably because they're probably busy with other things. To quote 3D Realms' response to "When is Duke Nukem Forever gonna be out?":WHEN IT'S DONE, IT'S DONE.Brian. Well said Greg. i don't see many thank you posts just thanking people for their work. add my name to the list of Thanks. Without everyones help i think that train sim would not be as good of a game as it is now. imagine if you only had only the default engines to use. i know i probably would have put it on the shelf a long time ago.

Apr-26-02, 06:05 AM (EDT) 11. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" I'm afraid this is getting very old so now I'm on my soapbox.I can't speak for all modelers, but this is my opinion.1. People seem to *yell* when they think they've given enough time to the 3d modelers to satify their request for a model.2. People seem to *yell* when they can't understand why no one has done a skin that *they* want.Reminder:
a) The modelers are probably not modeling a particular item just because people beg for it.
b) Speaking for myself. If I decide to make a model, it's because I want to make it. The model might have a graphical challenge I want to explore or it's just an item I personally like.
c) The modelers are not going to spend their valuable research and development time just to upload their model here and bask in the glory of everyone that says "Great Job" and "Thank-You". There's probably only a very small minority that would create a model just for that... especially if the thank-you's *are* rare.
d) The modelers have lives too.I've walked a mile in the 3D designer shoes. I know the blood and sweat I expend when I produce a model. It's nothing for *me* to spend a week's worth of week-nights (6pm-11pm) and most of the weekend on single model and that doesn't even include the skin yet. That may not be typical, but it is an example of how much time it can take. There's still a whole bunch of "tweaking" time after that much work has been done.My recommendation? <enable dream mode>Lets create a forum for the "I wants" and "I need" people so if developers want to find out what people really want, they can go there. Those requests won't be welcomed anywhere else. If that ever gets created, the rest of can happily ingore the insensitive demands of the "gimme pigs". (I love that term, thanks to who ever came up with it.)<dream mode off>

Apr-26-02, 10:50 PM (EDT) 15. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" but still, even if you dont have the talent, you shouldnt title a post 'WHERE IN THE HELL IS A _________, THAT SHOULD OF BEEN MADE A LONG TIME AGO, ONE OF YOU MODELER DUDES NEED TO MAKE IT RIGHT NOW' thats all a ##### load a bs, I can understand, and support, when a newbie makes a post and ask's if someones made a ______, cause its hard to find everything out there, but the modelers should model what they want and only what they want, yes, sometimes they may need ideas, but still, you dont go ordering someone to make a model, sooner or later(if we keep up at the pace we're at now) we'll have just about every model one could ask for.
Once again, THANKS! modelers.

Apr-27-02, 00:02 AM (EDT) 16. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-02 AT 00:06 AM (EDT)You know...I don't buy the "I don't have talent" line. Not when it comes to CAD work. Unlike me, the computer *can* draw a straight line on a piece of paper. Why doesn't anyone admit that when they say they "don't have the talent" they really are saying "I am too lazy to learn something new". Where do people get the idea that people like Jens-Chris were born with his 3D CAD talent. I'll bet if you ask him, hill tell you that his quality work is the result of long hours perfecting his knowledge of 3D modeling and 2D bitmaps vs. an inate talent. What he seems to have been born and raised with is a work ethic that ultimately allows him to *focus* on the task at hand, even if it requires more than 2 minutes of concentration. You'll have to do a lot to convince me that the phrase, "I don't have talent", isn't the same as, "I'm a really lazy person". Can't afford a modeling package? You mean you are not designing a MSTS LOCO? Do I need to remind everyone what the title of this forum is? (Egad, who p*ssed in my cereal this morning...) Sorry, I don't mean to sound so upset. I'm really not. I have a very lazy nephew so this topic sort of pushes one of my buttons.Pete

I build my models for my (and everyone elses) enjoyment! What else are you going to hear besides "Great Job" and "Thank You?" And why is that "not enough"?I have seen though, that there are a couple of MSTS designers here that seem to prefer complaining to heck when a small issue, like when their name in the credits are left out in someone's readme. Instead of calmly adressing the situation, MSTS folks will get into frenzys, threaten to sue (what good does that do you? Gain high customer satisfaction with your lawyer cause you pay him/her so much??), and other mindless things that would not benifit anyone and are near inhumane. This is a game for all of us to enjoy playing, and not a reason to go dip in a flame war!! MSTS is a game to entertain and make us happy! We all are here to gather around and share stuff for our enjoyment! I step off my soapbox, and I hope everyone here agrees that we make our stuff to share...not to have flame wars with!!Take care everyone!Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Let me recap since I'm not sure which discussion you were referring to.Many Train-Sim Modelers will share their work for free. Many provide their items with little or no strings attached and they *do not* expect thanks or recognition. They just want to share. The thank-you's and attaboys are more than they expect. What they don't like is to be yelled at, considering that they are providing their work for free.pete Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

By the way, here is a post from BillH from a YEAR ago."Please read the tech docs, all of them, and before you ask someone to make a favorite model for you, please understand that such a thing done right takes an immense amount of work.
This is a lot more work then it seams. Once the model works, then you have to make the cab realistic, then theres the physics and *.eng file to do. Then the custom sounds, and artwork in the cab.
ANd Another thing, I really doubt some one would make *You* the engine, they'd do it for themselves." Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I agree with you on several fronts, if someone doesn't paint it, i do and release it for all to have! and yes much of it is coming from young people, I am 17 and have had several thousand downloads total of all the stuff I have uploaded to this site.
Way to put it too, if you don't see what you want, do it yourself or kindly ask someone like me and if we have time we will gladly do a skin for you, again if we have time. With school and college soon coming my devotion to reskinning is quickly dwindling!I'm the one who painted the amtrak,cp rail multimark, and silverstreak passenger trains and locos, among my many uploads! Happy trainsimming and don't get nervous when you want something done, ask, DONT SHOUT LIKE THIS, and chances are me or someone else will do what you want sooner or later.

What we really need......is for the folks making these kind of "I want/we need" posts to at least read the <expletive deleted> forums before they start typing.I don't know how many times I've seen some of these types asking about something that is being discussed just a few messages down ON THE SAME PAGE!!Then there are the messages that just reek of non-thinking. For example: "Has the Big Boy been released yet?" Hmm, do you see any messages/screenshots about it? C'mon, some of these folks really need to think before they post.Of course, I suspect that most of them are hopeless....Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I really have noticed that a lot of people are getting miffed by the amount of requests(I wants) that people are making for the various loco's that they would like to have, Why don't we just cut through this crap of complaining after all if you ignore it will go away. An even better idea would be to make another forum just for requests and questions about when loco's are coming out instead of flooding this forum with sensless bickering. I mean every one from 4 year olds to 400 year olds can enjoy trains, Some people just don't have the computer talent to design the add ons. So enough bashing of the younger people and don't get so worked up if you don't like it ignore it!

Apr-30-02, 00:36 AM (EDT) 34. "RE: I want -- we need -- can someone make -- how about -- ARGH!!!" I'll agree with both sides here. I'm a full time engineering student and if anyone's been there before they know it sucks...and it's a LOT of work. However I have learned quite a bit about 3D design this year and am so anxious to start contributing to MSTS. But let's not harp on younger guys as a whole...cause some of us have a large amount of computer skills and abilities, and I know there are older guys posting "I want" messages. I personally am pretty quiet as far as the forum goes, I don't want to be annoying. All of you designers and skinners are simply amazing in what you do. Some of you are younger than me. So, if you see a "want message" and don't want to be bothered...why argue about it? Just ignore it, and maybe someone is sitting at home thinking..."what shall I make next?" Maybe a "want message" or two could help this person out. I check this board daily to see what is upcoming for this great game, and I've made feeble attempts at reskinning myself. I will agree that I see a certain few names over and over again requesting crap...and I know you guys see it too. If it annoys me then I know it annoys you. But don't let it get to you and don't let it stop you from making this game better. As far as paying for things go, I have bought about everything put up for sale for this game. My key word there is GAME, it's a game. Don't let these requests affect any of your work. You are all valuable developers for this game and there are a lot of silent people who really love your work. I went through the same thing about 10 years ago when I decided to dabble in graphics design, using MS Paintbrush in my spare time. I discovered a knack for it, and did some really, really good pictures with that simple program. Well, it was to the point that people I was working with were inundating me with requests to "draw this" and "draw that", and pestered me with "when is it going to be done" requests, it got to the point where I said "no more!" Anyway, if I had the time, I would probably be creating some trackside scenery for MSTS and posting it here. Since I live in the Chicago Western Suburbs, there is plenty of rail action here, and some great places for train watching, and etc. I have seen many buildings that I would like to create and post, but alas, since I am a single dad, looking for work, and trying to do a million other things I don't have the time, but, I am so glad that there are others who do, and take the time to share their awesome talent with the rest of us. To all of those who are impatient, or "need something" if you don't have the time/skill/knowledge to do it yourself, than be patient, it will get done when it gets done, and not a moment sooner. Thanks to all the locomotive, rolling stock, and other designers out there.... your work has made MSTS a truly enjoyable past time around here... Thanks again.... You guys are great!!
