Apr-19-02, 02:15 AM (EST) "'Options Line' Model concept. (big pictures)" Once Again Another Idea, Another Update... This One Could Be A Good Change.I've Started A New Line Of Models To Better Help The Average Re Painter In Making The Best Possible Visualization Of The Locomotive He Or She Is Trying To Create. Where I Started With Easy To Follow Mapping I Am Continuing With Detail Parts... This New Line Of Models Will Include A Set Of Details That The User Or Re Painter Can Add Or Remove With Knowledge Of An Ace File And Its Alpha Channel By 'Blanking Out' A Specific Detail That Is Not Needed On A Locomotive. Here Is A List Of The Details That Are Available Thus Far:Cab Visors
Cab Bay Window- (See Bnsf Gp38-2 Below)
Cab Top Air Conditioner
Cab Top Rotary Beacon
Antenna Set (Firecracker, Can, And Sinclair Type)
Front And Rear Ditch Lights
Front And Rear Plow
Front And Rear Bell (Rear Top Of Hood, Front In Center Of Number Board)
Brake Wheel On Hood
Winterization Hatch
Mu Stand
Added Chain On Front And Rear Of Engine Near Drop Step. With These Options It Is Possible To Create A Locomotive With Options That The Prototype Had, As Close As You Can Get Without Making Your Own Locomotive From Scratch Or Modifying An Existing One.While This Idea Is Not Necessarily New, It Is New To My Line Of High Quality Low Pay Models...Here Are Some Screenshots To Show Several Detail Combinations. The Bnsf And Wv&O Gp38-2 Are The Same Model, Just To Show What You Can Do With The Detail Set.Canadian Pacific Gp38-2 Without Dynamic Brakes, With Added Winterization Hatch, Front Ditch Lights, Plow, Antennas, Beacon, And Cab Visors.
West Virginia & Ohio Gp38-2 With Added Air Conditioner, Cab Visors, Ditch Lights, Mu Stand, Front Plow, And Antenna.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Gp38-2 With Added Right Side Visor And Cab Bay Window, Ditch Lights, Mu Stand, Front Plow, And Antenna.
West Virginia & Ohio Gp40-2 With Added Air Conditioner, Cab Visors, Ditch Lights, Mu Stand, Front Plow, Antenna, And Beacon.
All Models Include Every Detail Changeable In The Alpha Channel Of The Bitmap.I Am Open To Suggestions At This Point, But Hurry Before Its All Done!-Justin Cornell

All of this is done with alpha channels? Is this something that can only be accomplished with your current models (or models you're working on) or is this possible with others, too? You also mentioned in your post that ditchlights can be a removeable option, but all of the pics you have posted are of units with ditchlights. This is good thinking- -I like it.Clayton Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

This sounds in principle like a good idea! but I do have a question for you.If you do that, then surely the polygons for the components you're not using on a particular scheme are still there, just invisible. ?? if the model is a high poly model to start with isn't that a bit of a waste of resourses?? What I mean is that I think it might be better just to release multiple models because the polygons you aren't using can than be used in other parts of the model to increase the detail level.Best Regards,

Apr-19-02, 10:32 AM (EST) 5. "RE: 'Options Line' Model concept. (big pictures)" Yeah, the polygons are still there even if invisible. But they shouldn't make too big a hit on the framerate, since there usually is only a small number of locomotives on a consist, the most part of the polygons being on the surrounding world and the wagons the locomotives are pulling.Of course too much is always too much... but it's a good method used sparingly. I'm including in the Cab Forward options for different window configurations, so for example a Cab Forward textured for winter use will have the window hatches closed, as the summer version will have the open. Apr-19-02, 11:58 AM (EST) 6. "RE: 'Options Line' Model concept. (big pictures)" most of the details that were mentioned were already one the models with the exception of the cab roof details and winterization hatch. such a practice witht he alpha channels is not entirely possible on my current sets because of texture changes etc.
its not really using up that much resources. they polys do still exist as far as the computer knows, but theres so few of them it hasnt made a noticeable change in framereate or even much filesize.
my models are high poly, but are made with only triangles, which makes them high poly but also cuts down on the math required for multiple vertice faces, in the long run it trades off nicely.btw the track textures are mine, i made them to look like more of what i see daily.

>see daily. Yeah! I did notice the Granite Balast looks far more like the track we have in the UK too. Most of the original MSTS textures for track are not the best, and any changes are an improvement, especially ones that look right!! Nice work.Best Regards,
