Boxcars aren't the best candidates for articulation because they carry heavy loads, as opposed to intermodal equipment. A car that can carry 100 tons needs all 8 wheels to distribute that load to the rails. That said, it would be interesting to see an articulated boxcar made for the Sim just to see what it might look like if they were possible in reality.Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-17-02, 02:38 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" There were articulated passenger cars, but they were parts of a dedicated train set. Maybe someone else has more info, but I recall that some early lightweight trains such as the Burlington Zephyer used a specially designed streamlined loco that pulled matching articulated cars. Here's a pic of the "Texas Rocket" that shows the train:Message Areas - "werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" – image 1Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-20-02, 11:38 PM (EDT) 8. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" As for another example of articulated non-intermodal freight cars, the Santa Fe built a few experimental grain cars in the early 1990's. I saw them in service several times, and even have photos of three different ones. Haven't seen them for a couple of years now, so I wonder if they have been retired.

Apr-21-02, 03:22 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" NS is running an articulated auto rack. It has standard bogies on the ends and the articulated secion has a single axle under it. I've seen it in person several times. Sorry didn't get the number. Apr-17-02, 02:41 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" Yes, there are! It's called a "Trough Train", and it's
for carrying coal. There are 13 cars per articulation,
which is very lucky! http://www.icehouse.net/funnelfan/spctrains.htmTony Burzio

Apr-17-02, 04:56 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" Very interesting car, and it would make an interesting MSTS project.Message Areas - "werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" – image 2They get around the weight problem by using 125 ton trucks and keeping each articulated sections shorter than a normal hopper car. I'm guessing the advantage is that the car can be flood loaded at the mine much faster than standard 50 ft cars can.Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-24-02, 04:15 PM (EDT) 10. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" There's something floating around that Speno or someone has made. It's a really funky gondola that is like twelve cars long. It's basically a big long articulated trough. Unlike some cars though, it's got only two ends, the rest is open all the way. Lemme see if I can find a pic. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-24-02, 09:33 PM (EDT) 11. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" This stuff sort of reminds me of the TankTrain concept for tank cars. (IE; Load and Unload all of the tank cars from a single connection...) They did have to have an articulated connecting feed pipe that lead from car to car. Apr-25-02, 10:40 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: werent there any articulated box cars in American railroads?" I can't find the picture of that thing, but the specs were something like this:Created for rail rebuilding companies (widened slightly so a tracked crane would fit in it easily) Five units long (five cars) essentially ONE long gon though. Could be used to deliver rip rap and ballast, or ties. Basically it was set up so the crane could drive along the bottom of the cars without haveing to be moved, or requiring any switching manuvers.
