Jul-13-01, 04:03 PM (EST) 1. "RE: 3D model conversion software" I haven't tried this software, but once again I think the problem for many people isn't getting stuff into a .3ds format, it's getting into a .3ds format that the Kuju utilty can understand. From what I've been learning in the past week on this forum and in my own experimentation is, you have to follow very specific conventions for naming materials and setting up the parent-child hierarchy inside the file that apparently can only be done in 3D Studio. Otherwise you'll end up with 'dummy nodes' and hours of frustration...--C. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-13-01, 06:25 PM (EST) 2. "RE: 3D model conversion software" Only 3D Studio MAX creates 3DS files that are accepted by the CONV3DS utility that comes with MSTS. The utility refuses to convert 3DS files created by any other programs. Not even PolyTran works. We should sue Microsoft and Kuju because we can't use any other programs to create 3DS files and most of us don't have 3D Studio Max and most of us don't have the money to buy that program. DON'T even think of getting a pirated copy of 3DS Studio MAX because it uses a hardware lock to force you to use one computer to create 3D objects. This is because 3D Studio MAX can be installed on computers in a network to share rendering jobs. Jeffrey. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-13-01, 07:53 PM (EST) 4. "RE: 3D model conversion software" The 3ds format is just that, a format. Every 3ds is identical as far as format is concerned. The real problem is that within any 3d software you can setup the parameters in a way that the Conv3ds utility doesn't recongize - syntax sensitive. Thus far MS/Kuju have not fully disclosed the exact details of setting the parameters. All it takes is one syntax slip and the whole thing will not work in MSTS - the problem is that we do not know enough of the required syntax to know if and when we make mistakesm, and to correct them. From experience with FS, it will take MS/Kuju anywhere from 30 to 90 days to begin releasing the first installments of a MSTS SDK.Another example is the wag file syntax. All wag files are editable with wordpad. But if the content has the wrong syntax, then the file will not work. There are many 3d software to use in making new objects for MSTS, and there is a multitude of conversion utilities that will convert nearly any format accurately into another - and most are freeware. One could even use the freeware POV (from http://www.pov.org )and then convert the file(s) into 3ds using the freeware conversion utility.Charles B. Jul-13-01, 09:05 PM (EST) 5. "RE: 3D model conversion software" The "technical documentation" and online help are not helpful. I tried many 3D CAD programs, 3D modeling programs, and file conversion programs but the CONV3DS utility included with MSTS REFUSES to convert 3DS files created by those programs. I use the word "REFUSES" because the CONV3DS utility included with DirectX SDK can convert 3DS files created by other programs and ignores dummy nodes in 3DS files but I can't use files converted by CONV3DS included with DirectX in MSTS. Every 3ds is identical as far as format is concerned. It has absolutely nothing to do with syntax and everything to do with the basic structure of the file. What Kuju's tool doesn't go for are the added dummy nodes to the hierarchy. These have been basic building blocks to creating things in most other apps and games, but unless the companies behind these 3D programs decide to follow *exactly* the 3DS specs (or allow for stripping the added nodes from an existing 3DS files), then the resulting output will never convert for use in MSTS.There are other differences between the 3DS structure from one program or another (even between versions of 3DS Max), but probably nothing that would make a difference.Cheers!
