Apr-01-02, 09:38 AM (EST) "Help Wanted - ENG Files" Hi Folks,My Baldwin DRS-4-4-1000 and SDL-39 are almost ready for release, except I don't have anyone to give me a hand with the .ENG file. Would any of you kind souls like to give me a hand with the files? As for specs, it's a real battle to try and find specs for these things on the net (that'll teach me to build oddball locomotives!). However, I'm guessing the sd38-2 specs could be followed for the SDL-39, with some changes. Here's what I dug up on the SD38-2:Horsepower 2000
Tractive effort @ min. cont. spd. 83,420 lbs. @ 6.8 mph
Length over coupler pulling faces 68' 10"
Distance between bolster centers 43' 6"
Truck-rigid wheel base 13' 7"
Width over grabirons 10' 3-1/8"
Height above rails 15' 7-1/4"
Wheel diameter 40"
Fuel capacity 3200-4000 gal.
Engine 16-645E, 16 cyl. roots-blown, GM Diesel
Main Generator AR10 Alternator
Traction Motors (6) D77/78 direct current
Standard Gearing 62:15 gear ratio
Weight Total loaded weight on rails (avg.) 368,000 lbs. (1/2 variable supplies) The difference here is the engine. The SDL-39 used a 12 cylinder 645E3 engine rated at 2300 horsepower.
As for the Baldwin, I only have limited information on this beast. Here's what I managed to dig up for it:Engine 606sc
Truck symbol B-B
Truck Type AAR type "B"
Truck WB 9'-10
Truck Centers 32'-03"
Coupled length of unit 58'-00"
Height from rail to CL of couplers 34 1/2"
Height from rail to top of cab 14'-01"
Height from rail to top walkway 4'-08 3/4"
Height from rail to cab floor 6'-09 1/2'
Height from rail to top of hood 12'-08 3/4"
Width of cab 9'--10"
Width(max) over handrails or sidesills 10'-02"
Width of engine compartment outside 5'-08 1/4'
Maximum safe speed 60 mph
Total weight in working order 224,000 lbs
Driving wheel size at tread 40"Any help would be most appreciated, as I've been holding on to these locos for well over a month, and I would really like to release them.Thanks!Brian. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-01-02, 01:27 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Help Wanted - ENG Files" Hi,
Sure, I would be happy to help.
Actually the SDL39 is a very different locomotive than a SD38-2. The SDL39 was made for the Milwaukee Road only as a replacement for their SD10s. These units were both light weight 6 axle designs which were purchased to allow use on poorly maintained light rails. They were not ore haulers or designed for heavy lugging, they did enable a light grain trains during seasonal demand, but the heavy mainline trains were moved by the SD40 fleet. I think I have pretty good data on these.
I don't have quite as good a data source for the Baldwin, but I may have an idea where more info can be found. This will be really close anyway, because of the vintage of the traction motors, the criteria are pretty well established by their capabilities.
Maybe have these finished by tommorrow.
Thanks,

Most of the info you have above is correct. Here's a little information I have for the PRR's DRS-4-41000. The PRR clasified them as a BS-10asI have the total weight at 240,600, that is also the same weight on drivers.Max Horespower for the 606-SC engine was 1000hp
max governed engine speed was 625 rpms
6 cylindersI have the wheel diameter at 42" but some did have 40"The truck whell base for the unit was 42 feet 1 inchMain Generator was a Westinghosue Electric Corp type 480Traction motors were W.E. Corp type 362-D
Traction motor gear ratio is 14 to 68 for PRR.Air compressor was W.A.B. Type 3-CD
Air compressor capicty was 193 cubic feet.Starting Tractive force was 60,150 lbs
Max continuous tractive force was 32,400
speed at MAx Continous Tractive force 9.5 MPH Fuel capacity 900 gallon
Engine oil capacity was 185 gallonsThe PRR had one version equiped with asteam generator
Type Vapor 4516
provided 1600 lbs of steam an hour
water capacity 1000 gallonsI hope this helps,
Joe
