Mar-20-02, 06:15 PM (EST) "Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Is it me, or does the sound package with the New Haven PA's sound like the speeder, or a farm tractor? The original PA's by Cameron Lashley had real Alco sound to them, so I'm going to use that sound file in revamping the NH PA's. My question is, was there a fix posted that I missed? Or was the sound taken from some other sort of diesel-driven machine?Otherwise, they are beautiful models, and I thank the folks behind them.Bob Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-20-02, 09:37 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Bob we changed the sound to another one by Andy Hockin...
CLW's original sound was of a 6-244 which was more appropriate on a RS-3 type switcher! The PA had a 16-244 (16 cylinder not 6 cylinder engine and while "junky sounding" was a lot smoother than the original CLW-PA).... Andy Hockin's sounds are for a 16-251 Alco engine more appropriate to a MLRS-11 Road Switcher but have the advantage of being a 16 cylinder sound... The Alco 251 is the replacement for the 244 in their catalog and was offered in the PA3 (of which none were ever sold) and the FPA4 which was almost exclusively a Canadian locomotive.... However the sounds were some what similar though the 251 was less "junky" than the 244... They were both large bore 4 cycle diesels and via the Cooper-Bessemer connection were related to what later became the GE FDL series.... (2nd cousins or what not)
If you like the CLW sounds better and still have them go ahead and use them as I only commented them out in the ENG files... Since there is no exact match for the correct sounds We have both and it is a matter of preference....
I personally am offended when a PA goes by sounding exactly like a RS3! LOL!------Chuck Schneider---------

Mar-20-02, 09:40 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Make that an Alco PA4 not PA3 as a 16-251 engined passenger diesel that was cataloged and not sold...
Again the FPA4 was sold by MLW in Canada... (stretched FA chasis & trucks with steam generator - Alco's answer to the EMD FP series)------Chuck Schneider---------

Mar-20-02, 10:31 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" One of the guys in our model rr club also said the same thing you did - that the later PA's sounded a lot different than an RS3. I used to see the rebuilt D&H PA's (16-251) a lot in Boston when the MBTA had them, and now recalling the sound, you might be pretty close. I also discovered, that the woofer was turned way down. Once I goosed it up, the sound was a lot different. Thanks for the background info.By the way, the Dash 9 sounds are what I use in all my GE's, but the older FDL's were a bit more "chunky"?Bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-21-02, 07:21 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" And you reminded me of something!
There were several PA4s!
However they were all rebuilds into PA4 specs...
The most prominent were the D&H units which
were rebuilt using 16-251 engines from MLW....
So Andy's sounds would be prototypical for a "rebuilt" PA...------Chuck Schneider---------

Mar-21-02, 03:06 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Um, no. The original PA sound was taken from an RS-2 which (like the RS-3) has a 12-244 (not a 6 cylinder engine). It also sounds very similar to the original 16-244 engine in a PA - far closer than does an RS-11, which has a 12-251 (not a 16-251). If you are modeling the D&H PA4's, I agree that the RS11 sound would be closer, but for an original PA? - no way.Hope this helps,

Mar-21-02, 04:35 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Tom,With all due respect that does not sound like a 12-244 to me.... Way too rough... BUt even if it is... We are talking personal taste here! I personally preferr the sound we are using as closer to what I recall the PAs sound like (and Phil Moberg too... and he was ex-NH crew) .... I probably should have said the later Centuries as a better example of a 251 application....
As I also noted several PAs were re-engined over the years with 251s and the D&H units (which CLW did model).... I was just looking for a smoother deeper sound than the CLW ones.... Which I use for all my personal RS units....------Chuck Schneider---------

Mar-21-02, 05:41 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" Chuck,
Your NH Alco PA sounds courtesy Andy Hockin sound just fine, thank you!
And I realize that remembering sounds from my youth can be difficult (that was a long time ago!) but the sounds of six-cyl and sixteen-cyl Alcos are quite distinctly different and embedded in this aging railfan's 'Send Error To Microsoft' databank.
Good Job, and Chug on.
(On a side note, I'd love to hear the sound of a '69 Chrysler/MoPar 426 Hemi; it was TOTALLY UNMISTAKABLE for anything else, not the 427 Chevys or the 429 Fords as fine as they sounded were close!)

Mar-21-02, 06:09 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Sound error on New Haven PA's?" I need to second John's comments here. For a good illustration of how different Alco prime movers can sound, http://alcoworld.railfan.net/sound.htm has recordings of all sorts and conditions of 251s. It is easy to notice the difference even among the three 16-251s at the bottom of the page. I think Chuck had the right idea about trying to make a good thing better. I sincerely hope that as time goes on he - and all of us - are able to turn up new information to improve things still further.BTW, I'm not quite ex-New Haven (would that I were!): I went to work on a short line about a year and a half after the New Haven's demise, and had the privelege of working with a good many New Haven veterans. They proved to be superlative teachers, and I miss them... -Phil Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
