Mar-17-02, 08:13 PM (EST) "Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" Hey Gang!
Well, the weird looking General Electric BQ23-7 model is finally finished! Here is a little history on this "oddball":
The BQ23-7 was built by General Electric between 1978 and 1979. Mechanically identical to a standard B23-7, the special "quarters" cab is what sets this locomotive apart. GE designed this cab to accomodate up to five crew members and would virtually eliminate to need for a caboose on most trains. Due to lack of a national labor agreement regarding crew size and the use of a caboose at this time, most railroads opted not to purchase the "quarters" cab option, with Seaboard Coastline being the only exception with a total of 10 units delivered to SCL, numbered 5130-5139. All of the BQ23-7 units have since been retired from CSX's roster and have been scrapped.I have added some new details to this unit that wasn't on my previous loco model such as see-through steps, drop-steps with see-through tread, chains in the end handrails, a radio antenna, better handrails and stanchions and new "3d" bogies. Just like the C30-7, this unit comes with see-through tinted windows and a complete cab interior! Even with these new details, this model only weighs in at 4600 polys. Here is CSX 3008:

I would like to thank the following people for their help on this project:
Lighting: Kelley "Ace" Ellison (Kelley has done an outstanding job with the lights on this puppy! It is really a dream to run in the dark!)
Physics: Bob "plainsman" Boudoin and Peter Baker
Beta Testing: members of the CSX A-Line Team (http://www.calmstorm.com/scl-csx/)
Andrew Pickell: provided drawings of the BQ23-7Yeah, I know what most of you will say: "That's Ugly!"...which I guess it is, but in a pretty kind of way! I never realized when I took photos of these units in the early 90s that they would soon be gone forever. Hope you guys enjoy it! More locos coming soon so stay tuned! These units have been uploaded to Train-Sim.com and should be available in a few days or they are available now on my site!Highball!John D. Peterson

Mar-17-02, 10:27 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" Ya know, when MSTS first came out I guessed it would be a temporary fad. I figured there would be some hype at the start like pretty much any new game, and then it would quietly disappear into history. I never imagined so many people (and so very talented people) would become so involved and generate the plethera of items available for FREE download we have today (and it's been out only how long?!) And it seems that just about every new model sets the bar higher and higher. It's unbelievable that each new model can be so much better than the previous. But here, as ugly as it is, is the proof of just how high the standard has become. Amazing.I suppose there is just more train nuts out there than I ever imagined! Glad to meet you all!Looking forward to downloading this one.Ray
PS: If someone modeled this horrific looking loco, then I guess everything will come sooner or later! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-18-02, 00:20 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" Hi John,
I don't know, to me it has sort of a European look, call it Continental Chic, kind of handsome.
Great Work!!

Mar-18-02, 01:47 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" a European look, call it Continental Chic. I dunno, I think only Americans would make a loco so ugly - in Europe locos are used for passenger as well as freight, and that would scare off passengers - thats why we have the TGV etc.

Mar-18-02, 08:26 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" Looks pretty good to me! Really does. I get what you mean by looking odd though.. ya keep expecting to see a regular gp cab to it. But really it's kinda a pretty engine. I would think the engineers would love the cab for all the visibility they get. I'm definetely downloading this babs too! Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-18-02, 12:34 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" Thanks! I recognized the area believe it or not. I'm pretty sure that's the Mill Grove area coming northward. Real pretty area I think. Nice place to settle, play bridge, drink root beer and jello schlotzski's! Oh, don't forget the potatoe chips and mustard on the way over.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-18-02, 11:39 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Oddball Locomotive Released! GE BQ23-7!" LAST EDITED ON Mar-18-02 AT 11:44 AM (EST)Hey, AlabamaRailfan, Great loco!!! Actually I'd been waiting and hoping for one of those weird locos since Train Simulator came out. I had an encounter with one of them at a railroad crossing on the Southern in Manassas Virginia back on one fine spring morning in April 1987. Man, I thought, "What the heck is that?" I was fascinated by that strange, ugly locomotive. Thank you for making that wierd locomotive. -- Chris McWilliams -- P.S.(maybe a high hood U23B) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
