Mar-13-02, 06:28 PM (EST) "2 interesting subjects..." 1. Anyone know who James J. Hill is? I know, but i want to see how many people know why he is famous (especially with railroads).
2. Recently I saw an article on "Modeling UP's Sherman Hill" and in one of the pics of the layout, a veranda gas turbine is either helping or leading a Big Boy and a train of boxcars past Dale Junction. The reason this pic came to my attention is, THE TURBINE HAS NO TENDER! So therefore how can it operate? Theres only one turbine i know of that doesnt have the tender and that is a double-ended (forgot the HP) turbine. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

James J. Hill ...off the top of my head
James Jerome Hill the "Empire Builder"
as far as GN was concerned he was GOD, built the GN transcon over Marias as a competitor to NP. After the railroad was built he needed stuff to haul, so he advertised overseas for settlers to come to the US and build by his tracks, after they came he did agricultural resuearch to improve their farming methods, was a rival w/ UP's Harriman......didn't he also have a steamship line to asia?
I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot of stuff Matt

Mar-13-02, 08:43 PM (EST) 2. "RE: 2 interesting subjects..." Actually, the UP gas turbines in several classes were built without fuel tenders. As I recall, #50 (the first one, with cabs on both ends) was noted for rapidly running out of fuel. So, the first batch built in quantity (#51-60) changed the design to eliminate the 2nd cab in favor of a larger on-board fuel tank. This change also carried into the second production batch, the 'Verandas'. However, there still was a need for more fuel, and the Union Pacific adapted discarded steam locomotive tenders (I believe from 9000 class 4-12-2's?). So, depending on the exact date, yes, you could have seen one of the smaller turbines operating without a tender. There were also some variations in tenders. For a while, two of the 51 class turbines were coupled up with a single tender between them. At least one veranda turbine was mated to a modified tank car that carried propane for fuel.
As I understand the matter, with the lessons learned from the first groups of turbines, the larger #1 class turbines were built from the start with fuel tenders. Newly constructed, not recycled steam tenders. So, you would not have seen a large turbine operating without a tender. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

But what does that have to do with anything on Wednesday? 2 of my classes took a trip to St. Paul, located on Summit pkwy is the James J. Hill house! (strangely enough, I saw 2 trains of the big yellow Autos, but I didnt see the roadname.) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
