Mar-12-02, 03:30 PM (EST) 1. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Really Good looking Caboose.
I have always felt that a train isnt compleate without one.
almost all trains that I make in the Consist Editer have one with exception of the most modern trains and Passenger sets.
Besides I like to have that extra View point that they provide.Don Pottorff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-16-02, 05:03 AM (EST) 20. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Is there going to be an interior view (ie key #5) because that really makes a caboose worth having.

Mar-12-02, 11:51 PM (EST) 5. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Larry,That caboose is coming along SWEET!!! Doe sit have the offcenter cupola? (Can't tell from the screenshot angle)I'm going to venture a guess that your model gets reskinned as much, if not more, than the TA and 3DTrains F7's! Might get to be the most reskinned model yet!Keep up the great work! ;)Chris Denbow - Baltimore, Md.

Mar-14-02, 03:45 PM (EST) 16. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Jfroth.............next to the New York, Ontario & Western Rwy which I am modeling in MSTS the D&H is one of my favorites. Many interchange points in Pennsylvania between the O&W and D&H which I am attempting to duplicate ( especially at Carbondale and Jermyn Transfer ). Also doing Sidney, NY on O&W. Appreciate any help you can provide about where the photo was taken? What about the caboose to the right (which looks like a more standard design)?

Mar-15-02, 10:32 AM (EST) 18. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Joe,
The D&H 35794 was taken at Whitehall, NY (north of Glens Falls.) Sorry, I don't have a photo of the caboose to the right; too stingy with the film!
E-mail me at your convenience.

Mar-13-02, 12:44 PM (EST) 9. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Thanks for the encouragement. The car does have an offset cupola (5 roof panels on one side and 4 on the other). During my research on this car I discovered that the coupola height varied as well. The early cars (up through the mid 60s) tended to have a higher cupola with the bottom of the cupola side windows even with the top edge of the roof. Later cars usually had a lower cupola with the window bottom even with the top of car side/bottom of roof facia. Roof walks seem to have dissappeared on new cars about 1970.I am planning to follow up this low cupola 1970s version with an early 60s high cupola with roof walks version and its non-widevision variation. A bay window version is a good possibility as well.I'll be happy to do other modifications for those who will repaint the car and upload their results to Train-Sim. Mar-14-02, 10:42 AM (EST) 10. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-02 AT 10:44 AM (EST)The caboose looks great. Dont be afraid to take your time with it.
I believe the cupula height was determined by where the owning railroad ran. Most of the eastern roads had low heights due to lower clearances in the tunnels then the western roads had in their tunnels. I know the tunnel clearance was a issue back then as it did keep autorack and double stacks off alot of the eastern roads. This is one reason why Amtrak didnt run Superliners east of Chicago as a rule. Now this isnt an issue so much as alot of the mainline tunnels have had their clearances enlarged so they can accecpt double stacks and autoracks.
great work ..

Mar-14-02, 10:57 AM (EST) 11. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Great looking WV. Question on texturing within 3D Canvas. I am having a devil of a time getting my textures to go where I want them within 3D without distortion. How do you apply your textures successfully? A step by step would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help. Joe Cooney Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 01:59 PM (EST) 12. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Well here is what I do 90% of the time:1.Load image into the Material Pallette as the Primary Texture2.Check that the Translucency Map is what you want and that the Color selection is white.3.Make sure Flat Wrap is selected4.Make sure Ambient=20, Specular not equal 0, Translucent=05.Use the Crop Texture button to select the area of your image to be applied.5.Using Point and Face selection tool select faces to be textured6.Select the Edit Using Screen Coordinates from tool bar at top of screen.7.Right click on screen and select the View Orthographic mode to look straight at the faces being textured.8.Select the UV Map Selection object operation to adjust and apply the final mapping.9.To later do final tweaking, reselect the faces and select the UV Remap operation.Hope this helps.

Mar-14-02, 03:34 PM (EST) 14. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Very helpful step by step Larry. Thanks. One added question. I am attempting to put textures on trackside signs I have created. The shape is oval (33" wide x 18" high). With ovals and any circular shapes in 3D I notice many, many individual sections on the face of the sign ... do I multiple select these individually by holding down either the shift or Ctrl key or do I just "merge" all these faces into a single face? this may not exactly be the type of thing you do but I thought you might be able to offer some insight to a novice! I will contact Ambilis and 3D also. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-16-02, 02:33 PM (EST) 22. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" If you select any one of the triangles with the Alt key pressed, all the faces will be selected and can be mapped as a unit. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 02:44 PM (EST) 13. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Excellent, I rode in quite a few of those with my conductor father, between Seattle and Portland on the BN! This will be a nice addition.I know some of you know how, but in case you don't, I've posted in the sound forum on how to get the engine or helper engine to be heard in the "5" view, such as in the cupola. Crossing bells too!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 03:36 PM (EST) 15. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Steve..How is that listed in the Sound Forum. I can't find it. This would be a great addition to just hearing the rail joints click by.

Mar-14-02, 06:24 PM (EST) 17. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" It is the very first post at the moment! http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/83.html I've also been working on jointed rail sound, recorded in BN caboose 11411 in about 1969. I have it working, speed controlled in my own cabooses and engines, but it's still in the developement stage. Another fellow is working with me and has simplified the sms files for it, but I got sidetracked!I guess once it worked right, and I got busy, it dropped in priority. I really will get it done and posted. Maybe in the next week, I'll try!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-15-02, 05:31 PM (EST) 19. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" Hi!What would happen if you had an engine that
had no traction at all, using the engine
config files. If you put a caboose skin on it,
wouldn't you then have a caboose that could
have smoke coming out of it's smokestack,
like the diesels have coming out of their fans?
You could also put in rail noises instead of
the engine sounds... Tony Burzio

It's a 'reality-check', i.e., your work looks real.
I also thought your post on StuartL's screenshot competition is without peer - that screengrab's another 'reality-check' - it looks like a photo!
It doesn't get any better...
Thanks for your effort,
John

Mar-19-02, 05:54 PM (EST) 30. "RE: WideVision Progress Report" I don't mean to sound like I'm rushing you, but I NEED THAT MODEL!! I was building some consists last night, and was realizing how badly we need some modern US caboose models that are up to the standard of quality that MSTS has arrived at.I am most eagerly awaiting that fine model!!Ray
