Mar-11-02, 02:29 PM (EST) "The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" is shunting out of the roundhouse... WARNING: 14 pics !!" Well...Here the latest shots of our engine :
PART ONE
PART TWO
TENDER
FRONTNow the free-taken part...
Side shot along the whole loco.
The smoke will go through the brigde...
PANORAMA VIEW...
Look at the details...
Look at the details... again...
In very sharp curves and tight switches the loco will derail optical, ONLY optical... and the cylinder connections won't work right any more... SORRY !!!!
Here you can see the driver details. I spent a lot of time on them...
Again you can see the high detail level...
The whole monster !!
Shunting eastbound to Shelby...Ok, here a few facts :Details :
- hose connections between tender and loco
- a lot of pipes are added in 3d
- the connections from the boiler to the front cylinders will work correctly, except you take tight curves
- tinted windows with cabinside
and a lot of other details...The whole loco (loco & tender) has...... 20462 polygons
... 12923 vertices
... 53 parts
... taken about 50 hours to workI hope you enjoy !!!!
And PLEASE don't mind for that optical derailing in tight curves...Now the loco is shunting to the tuning shop...
Right chuck ??? There are still a few details to add, I think 3-4 details.HAVE FUN !!!!Jens-Chris----------

I can hardly wait to run it.Don't mind about the optical derailments on the curves. Mar-11-02, 05:31 PM (EST) 8. "RE: The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" is shunting out of the roundhouse... WARNING: 14 pics !!" just have a few questions about it
1 how well will it pull a long train of lets say 50 cars.
2 what Sounds and Cab will you use with it (hope the ones from the 4-8-2 mountian from TA).
3 do you have any plans for any other steam locomotives?Just have to say looks good and cant wait to pull a large train over Marias Pass 3 with it

How about this...make two alternate sets of CVF and SMS files that refer to the TA Mountain sounds for one (for those who have it) and to the default Scotsman cab and the Gölsdorf 380 sounds (which are just better than the Scotsman sounds for heavy engines) for those who do not have the Mountain.D.M.

Mar-12-02, 02:14 PM (EST) 21. "RE: The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" is shunting out of the roundhouse... WARNING: 14 pics !!" I am supprised you would rather have the Scottsmans Cab view instead of this
dosent the Scottsman View look a little cartoonish compared
and you would rather have that shrill European Whistle with the Bigboy.
The big boy had an Awsome sound to it.... a sound of brute power.
The whisle reflected this power.
you want an engine that pulls a 5 1/2 mile long train to have a shrill whistle I think notDon Pottorff

Mar-12-02, 02:47 PM (EST) 22. "RE: The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" Sound!" I did a Big Boy whistle, which is sent off to the developers. I've had a great idea for the chugging sound. I am copying part of my post in the challenger thread here;I've been playing with an idea to get the exhaust sounds of 2 engines under 1 boiler as in a simple articulated. As those of you who have watched videos or seen 3985 in action know, the engines do not stay in syncronization.
How about this? There are two streams for the power wave files. Instead of having them cross fade to mask the speed changes, how about playing 2 at the same time, one with about a 2-4% faster chug rate. It might require more individual
streams this way to sound right. As it stands, the stock sms files have 16 streams, 8 faster, 8 slower, and each of the 2 sets only has 4 speed changes (up or down), so they might have to have twice as many to sound good. I hope I got this idea across OK!IT WORKS!!! I now have a test loco (Pacific) that sounds like 3985, (it sounds very strange coming from this engine!) with the 2 separate exhausts running in and out of sync., and roughly 4, chugs (each set) per driver revolution at about 4, 8, 12....mph. Because of the 2 streams playing with slightly different speeds, the transitions that are normally cross faded, are barely noticeable.Steve

I LOVE the Mountains...Especially the whistle..every now and then i load one up in MSTS and just sit there, hand on the spacebar, listening to the deep, loud 'WHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'(At least, that's what i think it is..reminds me of the Nature Boy, Ric Flair..)

NOW THAT IS QUALITY WORK!!!!I did say I'd be the first to congratulate you if you got it right. (looks like i got beaten to that one) Very pleased to see you took your time and did exactly that. Well done on achieving something that has baffled and buged many locomotive designers to date. You deserve all the credit you get for this. This will probably turn out to be the most downloaded locomotive in the history of trainsim to date and rightly so.Very well done. You have more than a bright future in model design. I have no doubt that there are a few game companies out there that would pay big bucks for a desiner as tallented as you are! Go For It!! Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)
