Mar-08-02, 08:41 PM (EST) "New Locomotive in Development" Hi Folks! It's time for another locomotive again! This time, its a request from a friend. Here's the preliminary shots
There's still quite a bit of development to do, but here is the result of a couple hours' worth of work.Guesses and speculations are welcome, but this one's a gimme - anyone with a CP roster will get it in about five seconds!Brian. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-08-02, 11:45 PM (EST) 3. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" A Baldwin DRS 4-4-1000, worked on Vancouver Island I believe. What do I win? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-09-02, 01:40 PM (EST) 5. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" That looks great! A very historic locomotive for the CPR. The E&N Railway on Vancouver Island had the distinction of being the first rail line in Canada to replace steam with diesels and they did it with these.I'm gonna give up starting anything at all. Just when I get my reference material together somebody beats me to it! Oh well I'll keep looking for something else unique.Looking forward to this one Brian!

Mar-09-02, 07:15 PM (EST) 6. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" You might have it sooner than you think! I spent half of today working on it - here's the final model!
Either I'm getting better at building these things, or this model was simple to build. In any event, it needs some .ENG massaging, and it's ready to hit the road!Brian. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-10-02, 01:00 AM (EST) 7. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-02 AT 01:19 AM (EST)Excellent!! May I suggest though an adjustment to the cab roof...it should be curved rather than angular. You know of course that to be prototypical (for CPR/E&N) you also need to have a model with a fuel tank and a model without. I haven't yet discovered why they were that way but I'm still looking into it.

Mar-10-02, 07:43 AM (EST) 9. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-02 AT 07:45 AM (EST)Thanks for the tip, Stew. It has been fixed! As for the fuel tanks, I found out through a friend that the freight versions had a fuel tank in the short hood, while the passenger versions had external tanks.I added the tank to this model because I can't find any really good reference photos that show a detailed undercarriage, and it looks kind of funny without anything to fill the void.It will be taken out on request though!Brian. Yeah! I had no clue about the cab for the BHP GE the other day, so I least I got one right. I'm Canadian though, so I suppose this was easy. Not many Baldwins north of the border. I'm eagerly awaiting the release. Any chance of skinning it in some of the older CP schemes? These wore some really early versions of Maroon and Grey. Thanks,Marc Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-11-02, 08:41 PM (EST) 12. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" The Action scheme looks great. The colours on the rest look to be quite accurate. The grey strip and the yellow strip seem much too wide though on the block lettered models. Also, according to my Rail Canada Vol 3, the Tuscan and Yellow model had 12" black lettering for the road name and numerals. I have more lettering info for them I can pass on if you want to contact me by email.

Mar-12-02, 10:22 AM (EST) 15. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" Weird...the pictures I looked at for reference had the script lettering and numbering in the maroon colour. Observe:
and this one:
Maybe there was a transition period where the colours were moving from maroon to black or vice-versa?Also, looking at they grey stripe, it appears as if the stripe on the scripted unit is indeed wider than the one with block lettering, or are my eyes playing tricks?Brian. Mar-11-02, 10:44 PM (EST) 13. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" They look great. I'm not an expert on the maroon and grey, but I think the grey stripes are maybe a bit too wide. There is a Rails Canada book that should have detailed drawings of those units in the various schemes, if you can track down a copy.Marc Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-12-02, 07:46 AM (EST) 14. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" LAST EDITED ON Mar-12-02 AT 08:20 AM (EST)Yeah, you guys are right. It is a little wide. I just fixed it up - how's this look?
I just did the lead unit for now - I still have to do the other two. I want to get it right before I go and do the other ones.Brian. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-12-02, 06:22 PM (EST) 17. "RE: New Locomotive in Development" Lookin good Brian. You may need to turn them around though. CP ran them long hood forward. In the Tuscan and Grey scheme the grey end of the hood with the yellow stripes wrapped around the end was a long distance visual clue to the front of the locomotive. In the Multimark scheme the logo was always at or nearest the back of the loco.Stew Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
