Feb-28-02, 08:59 AM (EST) "TSM Patch on its Way" Hi Folks,Here's the latest from the TSM guys with regards to a patch:"An update is on the way early next month (a week or so away) - however, the issue with the extrusion of the concave polygon is not a bug - it is a limitation. There are an infinite combination of shapes possible. All I know is that the 'problem' will still exist - it is that way with its parent program FS design Studio. All you can do to avoid it is to delete the end polygon, then select the points of the end polygon (in point mode) in groups of 3 and use the Make Poly From Selected Points menu in the Polygon menu."Brian. Well I hope the patch works better than their support does!! LOL As for new the new features you just mentioned, all they're trying to do is catch up with 3D Canvas.... and they're still way off, it's still very short in capabilities!! and the exporter isn't anywhere near as good as the one in Canvas. But if you want to use it that is of course down to your personal choice. My personal experience and oppinion is, it's a waste of money and the support and documentation stinks!Best Regards,

Feb-28-02, 02:13 PM (EST) 3. "RE: TSM Patch on its Way" Fozzybear;I have to disagree with you on your views, but respect them. I am limited in that I never used 3dcanvas, but I like the export in that it writes all 3 required files to the right location and updates the ref all at once.David Klemm

Thanks David and I of course respect your oppinion. I guess it's a matter of personal choice. The point is that not only does the exporter in Canvas output three files.... It also creates sound and cabview, creates the main three files, sorts the Hierarchy (you don't even have to know anything about that if you don't want to) exports the model directly to MSTS.. Converts all your textures including dealing with transparency and semi transparency (again without you having to know anything about how that works if you don't want to). Creates all smoke, steam, animation, heads out views, Handles lighting and material properties etc etc....The only thing it doesn't do is create a consist. and it works every time without import errors! It also has a vast aray of import and export options including 3DS. On top of the above the support is superb, the documentation includes tutorials that actually work. It's also significantly more powerful than TSM and Easier to use than MAX. Unlike MAX it doesn't have a habit of trashing your files either. As far as I'm concerned it's the only choice. The above is why I moved to it. That combined with how unhelpful Abacus had been when I tried to discuss something with them.I suggest you go check out the Amabilis web site http://www.amabilis.com The specific tutorials for trainsim are free to download and read and they are very interesting.Best Regards,

Feb-28-02, 07:52 PM (EST) 5. "RE: TSM Patch on its Way" No doubt about the full range of features in 3D Canvas. Personally I've found this vast array to be overkill though for the needs of MSTS and confusing to use. The complexities of the application are too much for me to the point that I still haven't been able to produce anything from it for TSM. I find the learning curve on to be too steep. But of course 3DC wasn't designed for making MSTS models, rather it was adapted to meet those needs. And a fine job that seems to be. Since there's only one product that Amabilis publishes, support is extremely good. A new version or maintenance release(6Mb)appears nearly every week. But then you have to uninstall your current one completely and then download an additional 12Mb throught the 3DC menu to get the needed MSTS export features. The vast array of file import/export available is nice to have, but who needs them? The 3DS format maybe, but then I don't see a whole lot of 3DS file sharing going on anyway. And the open format of the scripting makes it a prime candidate for someone to develop an *.s file import tool. This on top of no restriction on it's use for commercial development of models.I have 3DC and TSM both. I find TSM more straight forward in it's approach to developing MSTS objects and so 3DC sits idle until I find time to learn how to use it. But then that would take me away from building models with TSM.The TSM update isn't about trying to catch up to 3DC, it's about making it easier to produce and install new models in MSTS.

Go ahead and use it.As for canvas being confusing, I think you'd find if you took a bit of time with it that it's far better a piece of software than TSM. The easiest way to get to grips with it is to work through the Wagon building tutorial. By the time you finish that you'd have nearly all of the skills you need to produce models for MSTS.The exporter does work far better than the one in TSM (does a lot more work for you) and offers a lot more MSTS import options, which unlike TSM all work without generating import errors.BTW if you think Canvas has a vast array of options you should try 3D Studio Max some time!! That really is overkill for Trainsim Models, compared to that anything is user friendly.Best Regards,

I need a short break from the BQ23-7 model while our resident "lighting GURU" fixes it up for me and this sounds like a good diversion. I tried using 3DS and was able to work through the tutorials at TA.com, but had a helluva time starting something from scratch and getting it to work in MSTS.Highball!John D. Peterson

If you do get stuck with anything John Just drop me an e-mail! I'm always happy to help people sort problems out. Doing that benefits the whole community. The more designers who produce models and understand the software the better! simply because it means the number and quality of models will only increase!Best Regards,
