NO WAY!!!! If I want someone to be able to alter my models then I'll give them the 3ds files or make them public files! But I want to have that choice! not have it taken away from me by this util.Best Regards,

Freeware models are a common site on the net for most everything I think the big thing here is that there is something of a market for the models and an altered version may be so indistinguisable(sp) from the original that the artist wouldn't be able to spot it... Models (Cars/Locos/Buildings) found here and at other sites are for the most part changeable (repaintable with author's permition) and 'skins' have been added without much if any problem. Perhaps a sharing of resources to speed up the modeling process. Parts of the model could be uploaded so that others could add them to there models to speed up the modelling, credit would of course have to go back to all the creators of the model as a combined project...///////\\\\\\\

But it will only be a matter of time before someone creates, or takes an exsisting program..Like 3D Exploration and gives people the ability to make the conversion...
The all mighty 3DMAX file and Light Wave files "ALL" have conversion programs..
It's understandable...Why you dont' want too see your hours of hard work "Given Away",Only to be claimed as "MINE" by some one else...
IMHO..

(Can you say 'Napster'?) Having a one-way model format is the only thing protecting the intellectual property and long hours that these wonderful designers bring to our hobby. Not to mention breaking copyright law; whether the models be freeware or payware. I say keep the genie in the bottle. In the long run, we will all benefit much more by leaving things as they are. My 2 cents.

Allow me to answer for all of us; Me, Buzz Benz, Jens-Chris, HAC, Tim Kent, SamSpade, Matt DonnellyNOT ONLY NO BUT HELL NO!It would make it too easy for some slug to rip off work that we have put many hours into... If you want to use it ask and we will usually let you after we have released it as long as its freeware only. Please note that I am concerned about "Ripping Off" as in "Stealing" and then selling it as opposed to the poor shmuck who uses something with out checking first whether it is ok! We've had some "in-advertant" use and that has always been successfully resolved off line (thank God)... Never had any outright theft for commercial purposes yet... but this community is not quite as mature as the Flight Sim community so it is only a matter of time until the slugs discover us....------Chuck Schneider---------

If someone would like one of my models they need not fear me though. I have been known to say yes to those who have asked of things from me (at least I think). The problem lies in not getting credit for ones work. In the beginning even I needed a place to start. I don't hide the fact that my first model here (the SD9043) was in-fact only a modified version of the default Dash 9. I'll be it a -VERY- modified version. I have no objections to someone asking permission to use my work but I would really like to be credited for it.-Jago-

This would help me as a model builder tremendously save time.Chip

The problem is, other websites... if you write/e-mail to them, and give them the URL to this forum thread - that should help persudae them not to upload.Also, we'll have to make sure that no-one posts a link to this converter thingy on the forum, make sure the post is deleted ASAP. Whatever happens, don't reply to it, or it will keep going to the top, and being seen by more people, and so the likely-h ood of one of them being a plagariser (?) would increase.The only problem is, a determined hacker would be able to build his own s -> 3ds converter, and we wouldn't know about it - so keep your eyes open for models on websites that look 'familiar', especially payware sites, and report them in to the community hub (ie train-sim.com).As much as I support people's right to sell their stuf, I don't want to have to pay for stuff, just because of threats from a hacker. Be cautious someone might claim they have a converter, may even post screenshots, but these could be fakes, to scare people, there are militants, from other (unnamed but similar) computer games, who might want to distrupt the MSTS community, wait until it is confirmed before making any rash moves.
