Feb-22-02, 08:30 PM (EST) "animating steam engines" I was wondering if anyone methods or tutorials for animating steam locomotive running gaer in TSM. I have tried everything I can think of and the only thing I can get to work is the main connecting rod that connects the drivers. I have searched the threads here and the only thing that was discussed was getting the wheels to rotate, and I have already got that. It is frustrating because I have a UP Big Boy that I am working on and it works fairly well as two locomotives useing modified .eng files from the Scotsman. All I have left is the fine details such as steam domes and piping, oh, and a tender. But I don't want to go further until I can get the running gear animation right. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Welcome to the Forum, many members here will help you out for sure, if you ask.Can you post a pic of your Big Boy ??You have to choose how many rods would you like to animate ??
At my Big Boy there are 5 Rods animated.
The "moving" coordinates in the animation are compared from the origin of the main part to the origin of the Rod.
The rods should be linked to the main part.Rod3 should also be easy to animate (that one coming out of the cylinder). Rod2 (that one, which links the main rod to the Rod3)
will need both animations. I tried very long time to get it right. I tried and tried and tried...
But finally I got it right.
Then there is the "reverser". (I don't know how it is called in English, but in German it's called like this)
That are the little rods connected to the third wheel.JUST TRY IT OUT !!!

Feb-23-02, 04:15 PM (EST) 2. "RE: animating steam engines" Hey! thanks for the advice, I finally got it to work and it looks really good! Thanks a lot! I set the rods parents to main and then added a few disks of the right diameter at the axeses were things were rotating around and used the disks as guides. Once I did that I got it all animated in about an hour! I am afraid that my model is not very good yet, it is just the basic shape of it. But I went to the National Rail Museum in St. Louis last weekend and got about 10 or 12 pictures of the Big Boy they have on display there. I even got a couple of the cab and one looking forword from the engineer's seat to use as a cab file, but I didn't have a flash on the camera so I don't know if it will turn out. I also got pictures of a heavy Mikado, the Burlingon Streamliner (really cool stainless steel), a GM futuristic streamlined passenger locomotive that was a total flop but it looked kind of cool so I got pictures. Well, I am getting kind of off subject so I will say once again, thank you for the advice. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
