Feb-14-02, 04:06 AM (EST) "Modelling a passenger coach" Hello all,I'm currently building a passenger coach in 3ds. The car is 70ft. long, and has 15-16 windows on each side. Some of the windows may have bars. The doors are recessed.I'm having trouble deciding how to do this without a crazy poly count. One thought was to make the sides in a TransNorm texture, have separate polys for each window (also with a TransNorm texture), and have the door inside (with a regular texture). However, my early experiences with having the side be a single texture have not been so good - 512 pixels is not very good resolution for a 70' side. What would you recommend as a good way to go here? Should I try split the sides up into 2 or more sections, and map each one to a 512 pixel wide section of my texture map (using transparency)? Or should I bite the bullet and cut out real holes for the windows? My subdivision options are somewhat limited because some color schemes have stripes travelling across the side face. Thanks,

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago. If I remember correctly there wasn't a noticeable hit on framerates.Brian Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

WOW!! Great! Indian Railways coaches..... I was thinking about tackling some locomotives for that particular location as well! some great English and German designed steam locomotives were in use over there! Good Stuff!!!I'd tackle it by splitting it into separate short sections, it's the best way to go! you could have a look at the sample coaches in the Tarainsim samples directory to see how to do that! But as already said, if you really must do the coach body in one length you could use a 1024 X 1024 texture.. But I wouldn't recommend it, because it can cause compatibility problems with some video cards.as for poly count you can actually get away with more than you think! because you're not going to have 50 of these coupled up at the same time! Feb-17-02, 03:16 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Modelling a passenger coach" Thanks for the advice. I actually have an Indian Railways locomotive almost ready - a WDM2 class diesel (originally made by Alco). Still needs lots of texturing work though (see below). Have a couple of others in the pipe as well. For the passenger cars, I will need to be careful about poly counts, because some trains have as many as 24 coaches(!). But I think I'll split the body up into two sections. The current proportion for the full side is 512x114, so I could do two 448x200 sections, and still leave lots of space for the other bits.Message Areas - "Modelling a passenger coach" – image 2
